How the fuck do I make good coffee with this thing? It either comes out watery or over-extracted.

>> No.6160305

Also I'm not using a coarse grind; just the cheapest can of folger's on the shelf.

Get some whole beans. Grind them yourself prior to brewing. Grind coarse like breadcrumb consistency. Also, don't pour boiling water over the grinds; let it cool for a minute or so.

Heat water to 195 degrees F (yes, you'll need a thermometer). Add a pinch of salt to the coffee grounds in the french press and add the water. Stir the coffee/water for about 30 seconds then put the top on, putting the plunger just above the water level. Wait for 3 1/2 to 4 minutes then push the plunger down slowly. Enjoy.

>> No.6161294

If yours is like mine he plunger doesn't go all the way down to the bottom. You need to use enough coffee to fill the void or close at least. I recommend french roast since it's a french press. Weigh coffee, use 6 oz water per 1/2 oz coffee if it will fit.
Pour in hot water, wait a minute press and pour

Hey /ck/
I'm interested in becoming a professional Barista.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend any university courses in coffee preparation.
If anyone here prepares coffee professionally, what's the industry like?
How long did it take you to become a master Barista?
Are there some must read text books I should get before going to uni?

I have a 34 oz Bodum French Press. So that makes about 2.5 large US mugs of coffee rather than the 8 oz faggot sized teacups it's advertised as making.

So I weighed my grounds and figured out that five tablespoons will do it just right without measuring like a mad scientist.

You want a burr grinder and to choose the most coarse grind. Buy whole beans from a local roaster. Try your local farmer's market.

Use decent H2O. I have a whole house water filter plus an under-sink RO filter and I use that. Clean water is a big deal.

Heat the water to 204 F and pour it over the grounds in the French press. Stir it with a wooden spoon and put the top on. Let it sit there for four minutes.

Slowly depress the screen.

Good to go. If you have a travel mug, that's the best way to keep the leftover coffee hot.

According to Alton Brown, most people brew without using enough grounds, so they think coffee is bitter. Use enough grounds.

Put coarse ground coffee in press, pour boiling water over grounds, let steep for a bit, stir and then remove excess grounds that float to the top then plunge. This reduces over extraction issues.

First, get course ground coffee. Either buy it from a coffee shop who know's what their doing, or from the self-dispensing hoppers at some grocery stores.

Next, use two tablespoons of coffee grounds per serving.

Boil the water, add the grounds and water into the glass beaker, and stir with a wood or plastic spoon. Don't use metal.

Wait 4 minutes.

Press down plunger, pour, and serve.

first off folgers is kinda crap coffee to begin with i know because thats what i use in my french press.
i usually blend it with some dark coffee for a richer flavor.

i have an old bodum that makes maybe 3 medium sized cups but i just make 1 large cup maybe 12 oz.

16oz water, 2 1/2 tbsp of regular coffee and 1 1/2 tbsp of dark roast (yes i use fine grind dark)
add your water give a quick stir and let it sit for about 4 minutes.
another quick stir then press slowly, like a 5 second press. i do like mine rather strong.

it does give you that foamy richness that you dont get from a drip machine and yes there is some sediment since your drinking real coffee.

your just going to have to experiment to get your desired strength

This nigga gets it, Bialetti is top-tier.

Moka is a nice balance between espresso and other coffees- it's still like the caffeinated equivalent of getting hit in the head with a shovel in the morning, but it lasts a bit longer than espresso (due to there being more of it), so it's more satisfying to have with breakfast imo

Beans should be ground as consistently coarse as possible. The less fines (the results of inconsistency), the less sludge. That's not to say that there will be NO sludge.

Also, drink your cup in around 21 minutes or sooner. Any longer and it will over extract (due to the sludge).
