It's really just midwesterners, especially in Lutheran territory, Churches in the south usually have different social events. Most of the southern churches I've been to, when they have church meals, do it by having volunteers cook for all the guests rather than having everyone bring a dish.

can't say... but i mean, baptist, methodist, catholic, church of god. they all have dinner on the grounds where i came from. (it was never called potluck)

granted, wednesday night dinners were usually provided by the church and cooked by a few people. but those dinners were just to feed the kids that came in. adults didn't eat that.
