It's that time again, what wine have you been drinking recently? Picked up anything nice?

Picked up this the other day, it's Cotes de Bourg which is a little overlooked given its surrounding areas, so it doesn't come with the high price tag that other Bordeaux reds carry with them, probably best aging it for at least a little while but that isn't going to happen

There's Beaujolais, and there's Beaujolais nouveau. Neither is considered fancy but the nouveau has a (somewhat dated) reputation as being trashy.

Anyway I'd see if you can find any by Marcel lapierre. The quality is good, they're not TOO hard to find, and he makes both kinds. The "raisins gaulois" is quite common.

In addition to my specific thanksgiving day pairings (which I can't remember at the moment), I bought half a case of 2009 domaine d'en segur le rouge. I don't know much about anything about wine, but this the first wine that finally made me say "I get it!" about wine. At about $17 a bottle, that only makes it a better buy. The fruits and the tannins are very well balanced, and I think it makes this a versatile wine.

Yeah it isn't cheap. That bottle was about 100 bucks- it's the second most I've ever spent on a bottle of (non-fortified) wine. Saving it for New Years Eve dinner with of and friends.

It's also not even just the loss of volume from drying that makes amarone expensive- there's a risk level to making it, since it needs the right weather during the drying as well, and bad weather can ruin it from what I understand.

If you're feeling that you might want to try something from the right bank of the Bordeaux region. With Bordeaux reds it's all about blending 5 particular grapes (technically 6 but never mind that) in order to get very balanced and top notch wines. On the right bank of this region it's very Merlot centered, so although you get the likes of CabSav adding a bit of power and structure, the blends are predominately Merlot and so they retain that softness that Merlot brings to the table, and don't go overboard on tannins

was so fucking good that I couldn't stop huffing my glass, it was like honey

also the cork disintegrated into dust when we opened it, most of it falling into the bottle. Had to filter the entire fucking thing so we probably killed the remaining shelf-life

Fortified wine in general is just awesome and really underappreciated IMO. I'm a huge fan of tawny port and older madeiras particularly.

Trying to get into wine, can anyone give me a quick rundown of the basic differences between Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Savignon, and Zinfandel? I think I'll stick with red wines for now and branch out when I'm more experienced. I have a bottle of Freemark Abbey merlot right now. I like it, but I don't really have a frame of reference, so it's difficult to compare, or describe it's taste.

Why not start with white wine? Reds have tannins that can be off-putting to new wine drinkers. If you must start with a red, Pinot and Merlot should be easier to drink than Cab since Cab is more tannic. Pinot Noir is lighter and more tart than Merlot but least tannic. I'm not familiar with Zins so I won't touch on that.

I like the red kind.

Definitely not out of the question. It would probably do me more good if I tried some white wine to expand my taste. Thanks for the help.

Any good value red wines that you can buy in Australia?

Anything good would have to be imported, but I don't know what the tariffs are like there. Probably pretty bad based on the amount of ausfag whining that happens on the gearfag/consumerist threads on every board on this site.

>Recommending sparkling wine for Christmas presents edition

My buddy the chef always recommends Moet White Star. I enjoyed it. I don't have a lot of wine knowledge but I like to think my palate is reasonably developed. It seemed drier than most of the stuff I've had randomly, which I appreciated.
