I'm not sure I understand cornbread. Is it an after meal snack? Do you eat it with your meal? I always get some when I buy some chicken at Boston Market and I'm never sure how to eat it.

Cornbread means different things to different people. My family comes from Appalatcha, where cornbread is seen as a staple to be eaten at each meal. My mamaw told me that if you needed to, a person could live on cornbread alone for a good long time.

boston market cornbread is nasty, it has way too much sugar.

you can make it sweet or savory, but it should be mildly sweet. put jalapenos, cheddar, and fresh corn in for savory cornbread. put fruit and a small amount of honey or maple syrup for sweet.

Did you just admit you didn't know that creamed corn comes from a fresh corn cob and the backend of your knife after slicing off the kernels? Superfresh corn is sweet. That canned stuff is godawful.

OP, southern cornbread is quite a bit different from that Boston Market kind, as >>5918052
said. What you want is something only as sweet as the corn in it, and sweetened no more than a Tbsp for the entire cast iron batch. This is so you can drizzle a little cane or sorgum syrup on it, or honey, if your sweet tooth wants it after your meal for the final bite or two. I also consume mine when I make a pork chop main, have any greens or black eyed peas in my dinner. It does indeed sop up any vegetable side's juices, whether it's stewed tomatoes, some shelled peas, or beans, or greens.

If you want to get hardcore southern or traditional, you'll argue about whether the cornmeal is white or yellow.

What was the comment that was so stupid? Living off nothing but cornbread for awhile? Perfectly believable as you could live off only milk for a pretty extended period and older generations had to discover these sort of things during the depression and wartime as emergency measures.

Beans and corn bread together create a complete protein. Corn and beans grow easily in mountainous regions unlike most vegetables. While your grandmother probably didn't know why it is good she is mostly correct assuming you eat beans with the cornbread. It doesn't cover every nutrient you need though. Something like 4 years though you will be fine on just cornbread and beans.

Cornbread to me is an essential side to a few dishes. Specifically, ribs, chili, gumbo, and some other cajun or Southern foods. It's eaten with the meal to break the monotony, and in the latter two cases I actually tend to take a bite of cornbread and then a bite of chili or gumbo before swallowing.

My New Year's Day lunch is always a bowl of black-eyed peas with hot sauce and a big hunk of a cornbread. The combination's a great hangover cure, and of course it's good for luck. (I take my greens with dinner later.)
