Hello /ck/

I'm looking to grow my own chillis, but i've never grown a thing in my life. Does anyone grow chillis here? Any tips for a newcomer? What do you grow?

A quick google search shows that I seem to be a little late for sewing seeds, but are there some chilis that can be grown all year round?

I have. Two things that I've learned, let have lots of light and don't water them too much.

It's much easier to buy them. I tried in NYC and yeah I got peppers but it was a pain in the ass to do.

Pretty much anything can be grown year round, it depends on how much effort you want to put into it and where you live, there are a lot of factors. Mainly sunlight. If for instance you're in a northern latitude then you're going to have shorter days fast and it'll get cold. If you do it inside your home you can use lights on them.

A lot of factors, the experts at growing these things make it seem easy but it's really not.

This is what worries me, i'm British and it's coming up to Autumn/Fall so I think i've missed the boat. I just wanted to try growing something I loved. Looks like it wont be as easy as planting and watering..

Yeah you're probably right, wait until next season or get some growing lights and go to town.

Are they expensive to buy or difficult to set up and use?

That I don't know, but I do suggest this. Look into some magazine or publication such as High Times, I know that's for weed but they use grow lamps and such a lot so it would figure that those are people that would know about which ones the best are and know the best prices.

I just buy them now. I'm in New York, which is more south than the UK, it's a hassle to grow my own.

It's fun to get a batch that you made for yourself though, then you can say you did it and that's that.

It might be late in the year for this, but for instance you can plants that can give you a start in NYC Union Square farmer's market, but dunno about bringing that back to the UK, there might be import restrictions on plants.

Oh hey!

glad some people show interest in growing around here.

If you want to start, start halfway January next year, some good starters are Jalapenos, there are lots of varieties of 'em Early growers, large ones mild ones, you can actually try any kind, however some kinds may be a bit more difficult to keep, i for example started last year with some Reapers and Anchos.

the Anchos are almost ripe, but the Reapers...well lets just say some insects found the plant very appetising.

Try to keep an eye on the plant every day around spring and in the summer to prevent lice, also start small and transfer the plant to a bigger pot when necessary.

I hope you like green peppers, because they take forever to ripen

Insects aren't the only ones that find Carolina Reapers appesting.

I'm also in the UK and getting anchos is a bitch. Would I be able to grow reasonable ones just in a garden?

Dutch here, also that same guy.

http://www.pepperseeds.eu/peperzaden.html

Here, it's basically the same site i got 'em from just with ''Eu'' slathered in the name.

this is a reliable website, got them delivered in a few days with even some thai chili seeds packed as bonus.

If you raise 'em inside until the weather starts to clear up there's not a single problem, they are pretty easy to grow although it may take a while.

Tips: Transfer the plant to a bigger pot if necessary, be careful not to drown the plant, watch out with lice and other insects when planting them outside.

Bump before getting some rest.

Thai chili plants are small and you could probably grow one inside as long as pets or children can't get to it.

Peppers require lots of sun, and they don't need daily watering.

Even problano and jalapeno plants stay at a pretty manageable sdsize if you feel like growing indoors
