I see lots of fast food threads but never see any sandwich shop/deli threads. Chain or non-chain are both welcome. Subway fags are not.

Favorite sandwich? Favorite chain? Favorite small time place?

I've got a method of testing new sandwich places- I order their Italian sub. If it's good, I will usually be happy to go back to the place. If they can't make a decent Italian sandwich, I don't go back unless there are no other options.

Fuck me, OP, good sandwiches ("grinders") are a way of life here in Connecticut. There are lots of good local sandwich shops, and even the biggest regional chain, Nardelli's, far outclasses anything you'd get from Jimmy John's or Quizno's.

My favorite grinders are the gigantic ones that you find around Hartford. There are three main places in the city for that: Franklin Giant Grinder, Maple Giant Grinder, and Corner Grinder. Best ones to get are the chicken cutlet / chicken parm, meatball / sausage / sausage-and-meatball, and the Italian-style ones with lots of spicy cured meats like capicola, salami, soppressata, etc.

Pictured is a chicken parm grinder from the Wethersfield Pizza House. That's not a custom order - that's how cutlet sandwiches are done here, with several thin cutlets layered on top of each other. All breaded and cooked onsite, no processed garbage.

If you're really passionate about sandwiches, come to New England. We'll take care of you.

Also, just to clarify, what you see in the first pic is a half OF a half-sandwich. Here's an entire "half" from Franklin. You don't get a "whole" of these things unless you're sharing, you want leftovers, or prior experience tells you that you can in fact finish it all.

Not all grinder shops serve up such massive portions, but, contrary to what one usually expects from restaurants, quality is NOT sacrificed for the sake of quantity. These sandwiches are huge and also amazingly delicious.

So far the best on the east coast and definitely most unique has been Black Sheep in Richmond Va. The sandwichs are huge and fucking delicious. They call them "Torpedoes" and they're like a foot and a half long. I've had the lamb and steak and both were fantastic.

On the West coast and probably my favorite sandwich place in the country is a place called Red Buffalo in Oakland, CA. They have the best cheese steaks I've ever had in my life. They're nice and juicy with melty cheese and just the right amount of bread. They also have variations of traditional chessesteaks, like the Hoagie Cheesesteak with mayo, lettuce, and tomato, and the South St. which has bacon and garlic.

And as far as chains go, I think I'd have to go with Which Wich. I've only ever seen em in college towns. It's definitely worth checking out if you see one.

idk. I worked there in the spring, grew to detest it pretty quickly. A few others here have expressed similar sentiments. Only one kind of cheese, 3 slices bacon = 2 dollars extra, lots of junkies working at the location I was at and so quality of service was running downhill. When we take out the meats and slice them they look and smell repulsive, luckily everything is measured to measly decimal-specific proportions and slathered in so much mayo (if you get "reg"). Personally I liked certain subs (beach club, italian night club), it's mostly the ridiculous salt content and potentially shit service that gets me. Expect tons of lettuce. I like Jersy Mike's but they're not very hearty. Tasty though.

I'm one of those faggots who really likes Quiznoes, even though they're expensive, but there aren't any near me.

There's a new deli called The Brick nearby I haven't tried yet, and another deli really close to me, but they're in the snooty downtown area and their sandwiches are like $7 and they're only ok.

This Vietnamese supermarket makes incredibly good bahn mi. The bread isn't baked on site, but it is baked fresh and trucked in every morning from a bakery about 20 miles away. All of the ingredients are super fresh, prepared with genuine skill by grumpy little Vietnamese women, and served to a highly appreciate and mostly Vietnamese customer base.

It's also fun to walk around the store and look at all the weird as products for sell while eating your sandwich. There's a really neat boba tea shop in the same building. I sometimes go there first to get a banana smoothie with tapioca pearls before getting my sandwich.

3 slices of bacon is not 2 dollars extra, but 5 slices is (or less, price varies by location--my store is $1.50)

JJ's is pretty good if you don't eat it too often. eventually the sandwiches all start to taste the same... it is the lack of variety, but fewer choices mean faster sandwiches and speed is the cornerstone of their brand. that's why they don't toast the sandwiches and why you might have a JJ's one mile from your house and they won't deliver to you. restricted delivery zones = faster deliveries.

shit, i've been working there for over 3 1/2 years and i still eat it every week. somehow. some tips: add cucumbers and hot peppers to the #9 to perfect it. tuna, bacon and hot peppers are awesome together, and sauce and oregano make it even better. leave off the tomatoes and cucumbers, though.

moar tips: we throw away ALL of the wheat bread we have left at the end of the night. it's a grade-A fucking waste, so i always take as much home as i can. go in around an hour to 30 minutes until close, and if the manager isn't some faggot he'll let you have some leftover wheat. just say it's for a good cause or ducks or something, and it might help to buy a sandwich if you were hungry anyway.

also the gargantuan is over-rated. fuck that thing, it tastes like so many different things it goes full circle into tasting like nothing.

Yeah, but it's actually pretty good. Copy-pasta ingredients from their site: Avocado, Fried Chicken, Ham, Pesto, Real Honey, Swiss

There's a small chain named Big John's in mid Michigan, they make decent subs. Their specialty is pic related, comes with banana peppers on the side.

It's pretty good.

Subway worker here, I can confirm this.
The bread definitely has potential, but it isn't realized because the stores are staffed by students trying to pick up a few bucks and twenty-somethings that are spinning their wheels. If you actually pay attention to the bread from the point you take it out of the retarder to the time when you take it out of the oven, it comes out legitimately good.
Unfortunately this is lost 95% of the time because there are myriad other things that need taken care of and ensuring that the bread is warmer than 50 degrees but doesn't go over 55 degrees prior to proofing while dealing with customers and various veggie prep just isn't a priority. When I'd take the time to make the bread good, it'd be good. But when most other people (including myself on a bad day) tried to make the shit, it'd come out absolutely awful. Plus it doesn't help that the timing standards the company provides are utterly shit; a little experimentation on my part found even better timings.
At the end of the day, you're better off going to a little sub joint. But Subway's breddy solid a lot of the time and doesn't deserve being shoved completely off the table. Just most of the way off.

Chicagofag here.

I still remember my first time having potbelly's. My girlfriend was coming into union station and her train was delayed. Walked around, feeling hungry, a couple blocks away theirs the charles schwab building on the river. See a sandwich shop first floor, lunch rush is just leaving. Enjoyed it, to be honest the bread was a little overcooked that first time but subsequent times at different locations it was much better.

However, I used to live in both New York and Cleveland. Back east the deli's were on a whole other level. Cleveland was messed up because I asked around the locals for the best sandwich shops and they all referred me to garbage. I finally found this little cornerstore deli in Lakewood, can't remember the name, that became my regular joint, even thought I lived in strongsville. Slyman's was pretty good too.

New York (upstate) was absolutely carpet bombed with mom and pop deli's and a good 3 out of 5 of them were awesome as hell.

However, if you take 94 W out of chicago, you find this little city called Kenosha. My cousin lived here. They have this place called Mac's Deli, and this place was straight up Seinfeld's soup nazi joint. Best damn sandwiches I've ever had in my life, but they will refuse service if you stand in line and don't know what you want when you get to the counter. My first time I got kicked out. My cousin convinced me to go back. Mouthgasm, my bros. Mouthgasm. I still drive up there once a month at least to get either an italian sub or a bomber.

amazeballs. http://www.macsdelikenosha.com/

>Its some shit from the midwest!

Yea nobody from the parts of America that matter should be expected to know anything about the middle part of America since it really doesn't matter except for being a good location to produce the food needed for the people changing the world.

If your drunk and too far away from a Wegman's, a steak sub from Jim's Steakout is pretty godly. I always ask for extra peppers though. Vinegar on a sub is just too fucking good, idk why though.

Wonder if there are any fellow Quad-Citians here to testify to this place. Some of the best sandwiches in the area, far better than Jimmy John's.

Another 703/571fag reporting in. Wegmans is without a doubt the one stop shop for dank fresh food and gourmet groceries. Also love lost dog cafe for some toasty subs.

>regular white bread
>NO CHEESE
>toasted
>double onions
>jalapeno
>top it off with BBQ sauce
>salt packet to adjust seasoning

Bretty good for a subway sandwich. The trick is to use only the few ingredients that aren't shit.

I still haven't found a good sandwich in Ohio. Lived in Vermont for 20 years, and could get absolutely KILLER Italian grinders from the local deli. I miss that place like crazy.

Any Ohioans got a recommendation? I'm near Dayton, but we're always looking for a road trip.
