What's the difference between muffin (American muffin, not English muffin) and cupcake?

I personally think that muffins are made with muffin-mix method. While cupcakes are basically cake batter pour into small round shape pan. Thus, whether it's small or normal size, the batter of cupcake is essentially the cake. Whereas, the mixture of muffin is not cake batter.

However, my sis doesn't agree. She make regular muffins and then put butter icing on them and call them cupcakes. They are just muffins with icing on top of them. They don't just magically convert into cupcakes.

What /ck/ think, are cupcakes just muffin with icing on them or they are two very different things with different batter/mixture?
