I thought it was awful at first and now it's absolutely wonderful and fascinating to me.. I honestly never would have thought that drinking room temp whiskey, neat, with a few drops of water would sound delicious right before bed but holy hell was I wrong.

the negatives: it's very expensive and none of my friends are into it

Ardbeg and Laphroaig are very similar in my opinion, but I think Ardbeg has a heavier smoke on it

Islays are were its at

Is Lagavulin worth the price tag?
Ralfystuff acted like the 18 isn't that great and overpriced

I decided to try a few whisk(e)ys and I can appreciate how it's all different and deep and complex but I think just don't like smokey peaty burning drank. I think I'd probably prefer bourbon as I tried Bulleit and liked it

Ardbeg tastes more "dry" to me. Like a nice autumn campfire. 'Phroaig has a wetter, "rain-soaked vegetation" taste to me. You'll find that most Islay whiskies are similar in that they have those peaty flavors, but they're all pretty distinct.

>> No.5698667

>>5698657

bulleit is fantastic, should be for the price
if you haven't tried knob creek or makers mark, do

if you don't like scotch because it has a smoky flavor, there are more that don't than do..

go for a highland scotch like glenmorangie, highland park, or a blend

Ardbeg SCREAMS bonfire to me, which is why I absolutely fell in love with it this past winter. We were iced in for about 3 days so I had time to enjoy it right.. been hooked ever since

Lagavulin is good. Whether it's worth the price depends on what you want out of whisky. Have brand recognition and growing populations of new malt lovers caused the prices to inflate considerably? Yes. Could you get something just as good for less money? Yes. But at least for now, Lagavulin is still quality stuff. I might not spring for the 18YO when I feel the 16YO is almost as good. But in my opinion the 12YO is worth the extra scratch if you've already tried the 16.

It just depends on your budget, and what kinds of experiences you want. If you're an Islay fan, you have to try Lagavulin at least once.

Ralfy's good but he's just one man. Taste is subjective enough that you can't take his opinion as gospel. He is right about it being overpriced though. These days, I feel like most single malts are. It's the nature of supply and demand.

>what I want out of whisky

I want to be able to pour about 2oz in a glass and sit for about 30 min enjoying it and appreciate all of the tradition, history, and work that went into it. As with islays, I am amazed at the amount of smoke in the final product and how something so dank can be so complex and delightful. I am so glad I got into single malts, I can tell it's going to be a fun ride for many years to come

In that case, at least try the Laga 16. I don't think I've ever heard of a Laga 18, maybe it's a special bottling. Google search isn't giving me much other than special bottlings. Ralfy usually reviews widely available bottlings so it must exist. Maybe you meant the DE? Either way, I'd imagine that unless there's something else special about it you might as well just go for the 21YO if you want an older bottling. But who knows, sampling the rare and special bottlings is part of the fun of being a scotch fan.

My advice if you love Islay whisky: at least try the standard 16Yo bottling. I feel it is overpriced but it's fantastic. And you will feel like kind of an ass saying you love peaty Islays but you've never tried this one.

Glenfarclas

>> No.5698806

I can't really afford the high class stuff myself but a mate of mine once got a bottle of Talisker as a present and we had that with a little water.

It was like nothing I've ever tried before, really smooth and delicate. The drunkenness I got from it was different too, kind of like a cheerful optimistic tipsyness instead of the same old numbing apathy. It's hard to explain. I think that high could've been more from our excitement at having this expensive and delicious drink for the first time though.

Also, I'm no expert but I think scotch means a blend, and Talisker is a single malt so maybe disregard the above? But if you've never had a single malt (and you can afford it), definitely give it a try.

I've tried Glenfiddich but I doubt it was a 12 year old. It was nice though.

I am American. I met an officer from Exxon in a laundry mat at Disneyworld and drank beer with him. He was in the country from Scotland so naturally scotch was brought up.. he said to get into scotch, Talisker was the go-to.

I think its a highland which usually means no smoke (boo) but it is extremely expensive here so I haven't tried it

>> No.5698828

Talisker is actually one single malt I don't like to have even a splash of water with. But that's just me. It's a quality pour even if you do add water. I love that peppery flavor, totally different from the smoky, vegetal flavor typical of Islay. But you're so right about the different kind of drunkenness. Biologically, it's all the same. It's alcohol. But I've never been anything other than happy and contemplative when drunk on single malt.

Scotch, by the way, just means whisky from Scotland. That's all. There are blends, single malts, vatted malts (although single malts are often kind of vatted anyway). If it's from the land flying St. Andrew's Cross, it's scotch.

'Fiddich 12, by the way, is child's play. Not really bad at all, but nothing too characterful, which is what single malt drinkers are usually looking for. I much prefer 'Fiddich 15, and even then it's kind of boring to me.

And I actually kind of feel snobbish even saying that. Glenfiddich really is nice. I just don't prefer it.

>>5698799
Wonderful stuff. My favorite sherry monster outside of Aberlour A'bunadh. Which if you get a bad bottle actually kind of tastes like tires. I've yet to have a bad 'Farclas bottle.

Bunnahabhain 12 costs more than $70 where I live. I hate you so very much. Great whisky though. I just wish I felt more inclined to spend that kind of money when I can get "heavier" stuff for comparable prices. Being on a budget makes me tend toward that when I know damn well there are very pleasant whiskies that aren't peat or sherry monsters.

This is the Buunahabhain you're talking about, right? This is the price from a monopolistic liquor store in my area that loves to run locally owned liquor stores out of business without remorse, but we are forced to return to them because their selection is so incredible.
