Hey /ck/ , anybody familiar with czech 'vyprazany syr', fried cheese in english? I have czech relatives and they've recently made me this dish, it's unhealthy as fuck but GODDAMN is it tasty. Have you ever eaten it? Did you like it?

>> No.5670190

never heard of it, but doesn't look too bad tbh

It's called smazeny syr, and yes. You could get it from foodcarts in CZ for ~$2 when I lived there (07-09). They usually used Eidam cheese (the Czech equivalent of American or Cheddar, their cheapest and most common cheese). It's bretty gud.

I guess if you have any languages about Czech cuisine (or language and culture) I could probably answer them for you.

I just realizwd that if your relatives call it vyprazany instead of smazeny that means they're filthy Slovaks. Ask them to make you halusky sometime, it's my favorite Slovak dish. It's basically potato gnocchi, a soft spreadable sheep cheese called bryndza, and bacon. Basically a glorified mac and cheese.

We eat those in Italy, too, most commonly as a sandwich. We call them 'cheese cutlets.' Often, we specify the type of cheese.

I'm surprised this hasn't taken off in America.

It has, it's called Saganaki.

Me too. Though you have 'cheese sticks/mozzarella sticks' in America (we don't; we have crocchè/panzarotto napoletano, which is like the beautiful love child of a Yiddish knish and an Italian cheese cutlet).
Cheese sticks are basically the same thing in smaller form.

I don't believe you, never heard of that being here. But everyone seems to fucking love cheese so I think they'd like them.

Damn, that could be possible, I don't really precisely know where they're from lol, I just assumed from information on the internet that this meal is czech. I'll definitely ask them for halusky.. lol what's up with that name tho

btw aren't slovaks basically gypsies? cause my relatives are as white (pale) as they come

Saganaki is pretty awful, to be honest. It's just a literally-fried piece of "cheese" (it barely, if at all, melts so how it's "cheese" I have no idea). It's not breaded. It's not deep-fried. It's not gooey, cheesy goodness.

>>5670340
Yeah, I've heard of the non-melty greek cheese. That sounds okay, I'm pretty sick of melted cheese, really.

Cheese is fine when it is hard and cold, but when it melts, it reminds me of sweaty snot.

No, gypsies are very much a minority, but seem far more likely to immigrate west. Most Hungarians are white, for example, but almost every Hungarian I met in CZ was a gypsy immigrant. There's a sizable gypsy population on the Slovak/Hungarian border.

Native Slovaks have the same sort of Slav look that Poles and Russians have.

No, you're thinking Bulgarians. Slovaks tend to be Catholic while Czechs tend to be fairly irreligious, though.
One Czech I know (the owner of the house next door to me; he rents it out) claims that Slovaks are Muslims and gypsies, so maybe that's why you have that idea?

True. I just figured it was as close as we get over here. I live in Detroit and we've got a touristy Greektown area where that shit is everywhere. The smell of it is awful and it's usually kinda sour.

I don't mind the tang, but it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too fucking salty. Cheese should be salty but that stuff is just... too much.

Saganaki is proabably prepared wrong if it's melted. It shouldn't be flaming for long, and should immediately be put out with lemon juice. Draw similarities between saganaki, and meat that's been seared.

I feel you. They serve it with shitty bread basket bread instead of flat bread usually, which doesn't help much. I'm sure the hipsters will eventually re-invent it like they did poutine. Maybe they can fix it.

I love the American hipsters that try to pronounce poutine.
>poo-teen
That sounds an awful lot like putain.
>poo-taen
That means 'whore.'

For those not in le know: it's pronounced 'poo-tseen' or 'poo-tsaehn.'
Happy eating!

Welcome to Central European cuisine...

I had never heard of fried cheese before, though... I think I'll have to give it a go one of these days... might be kinda tasty and it looks really simple.

Gebackener Emmentaler, fried Emmental cheese commonly was the single vegetarian option in Austrian restaurants in the 90s.
It's pretty much always served with Sauce Tartare over here.
