>tfw you love pizza and Italian food but you have terrible acid reflux

Anybody else have this problem? How do you deal with it? I mean BESIDES taking antacids?

>> No.5669783

>>5669778
make the food yourself, use less fat.

>> No.5669784

go to the doctor and get medication for it? you might have GERD. antacids will only help so much.

you're probably going to have to just make some sacrifices, though. fat is a huge acid reflux agitator, so when you DO eat pizza, remove as much grease as possible with a paper towel. maybe go easy on the cheese.

>> No.5669785

My grandmother taught me this trick: before eating foods that you know cause you trouble, take a shot of straight vinegar. I don't know why it works, but it does, for me at least.

>> No.5669818

holy fuck man me too. I had some fries and fried chicken last night and I had terrible heart burn. I normally don't get too bad after eating foods, but over the last few months it's gotten a lot worse.

My father has problems with stomach acid so I guess it makes sense it would happen to me eventually

I personally sprinkle a very small amount of baking soda over my pizza.

I definitely might have GERD. Eventually I'll need to go to the doctor and get tested or whatever bc I can't imagine taking tons of antacids is in any way good for you. I will need to make a change in my diet though. I've seriously cut back on carbonated drinks and if I order a pizza I try and get light sauce and cheese but some days I say fuck it and get double sauce and cheese and suffer for it later.

One crap side effect of acid reflux is that it fucks up your gag reflex which is really shitty if you happen to be gay like me.

Is acid reflux mostly a fat person problem? Not trying to be insulting but I was under that impression. I've never experienced heart burn or anything like it in my life.

Maybe it tricks your stomach into not releasing as much acid.

It can make it worse, but there is also inherited acid reflux or foods which you might be more sensitive to. Pizza is a big one for me as well.

OP here. I'm definitely chubby, but I know fatter dudes who don't have any problem and thing people who do. I think it depends more on just how much acidic stuff is in your regular diet. A lot was in mine. I think I overloaded my body by drinking tons of cokes and pepperjack grilled cheese sandwiches for a few weeks. Thats about where I first started noticing the problem.

Anybody heard about if almond milk is a good alternative?

I know. I was broke and grocery shopping at Dollar General. Wasn't even real coke, it was those 85 cent 2 liters you can get. Don't know if that make sit worse.

acetic acid (vinegar) is a weaker acid than hydrochloric acid (stomach acid).
they way it might work is that the vinegar acts as base, neutralizing part of the stomach acids.

I think what he meant was 'dilute', not neutralize

>> No.5672450

>>5672441

Well in that case, vinegar seems a pretty silly thing to use. If the goal is dilute an acid, why use another acid? Water would be more effective. Or better yet, something containing a *base* which actually would neutralize acid.

Using vinegar to dilute or neutralize acid makes about as much sense as trying to heal a burn with matches.

>> No.5672460

>>5672412
>vinegar acts as base
Oy. The stupid, it burns like acid reflux.

>> No.5672464

OP, first you gotta isolate what is causing your problem.

For me, it was milkfat and milk sugar. Hard to say which one is worse. Eating cereal (with milk) late in the day, or eating anything with lots of butter, causes my stomach to churn out acid and for some reason causes my stomach to spasm while I'm sleeping, driving acid up into my esophagus (or worse, up into my throat and mouth -- I really HATE waking up with a throat full of acid, although so far I haven't breathed any of it into my lungs).

>> No.5672497

>>5669778
I've noticed that different, decent places make their own stuff (including pizza dough) often a bit differently, so some may be more manageable by your stomach than others.

Also, acacia honey is generally very good for maintaining proper functioning of digestive tract and may help somewhat in managing the symptoms (as well as being a good home cure for early stages of stuff like peptic ulcer, though it's the best to drink liberally and pre-emptively in general as it's simply healthy stuff that's good for you)..

Go straight to a gastroenterologist. A regular doctor won't do you any good. I made this mistake and wasted money just to hear "Uhhh, try some Nexium, I guess."
Changing your diet is the most effective thing. Taking Nexium didn't really help me, but cutting back on greasy and acidic foods had great results. Good luck, OP.

your regular doctor should have referred you out to gastro prior to prescribing gastro pillz.
your're absolutely right about diet. it took me years to get serious with this horseshit belly of mine, but creating a food journal and keeping track of GERD triggers helped this anon.

I started getting mild heartburn a few years ago, but only once or twice was it actually painful. Usually went away after an antacid and a little time.

But last night, hoo. Worst heartburn of my life. I'm not sure what caused it, the extra large dinner I had or the Chik-Fil-A spicy chicken sandwich (with extra Texas Pete CHA sauce put on at home) that did it to me. Either way, antacids did nothing and it persisted to this morning. It's finally going away after I've downed about a gallon of ice cold water, but I'm afraid it might start up again.

Take a break from deep-fried and/or fatty food. Eat a banana to help rebuild stomach lining in case of beginning of peptic ulcer issues. Generally, introduce more healthy stuff in your diet, less soda and beer. Someone mentioned one type of honey up there - drink some from time to time. That all combined should keep your stomach healthy and ready for really hard work on heartburning food in the future from time to time.
