My mother loves cooking and I learned a lot of cooking related shit from her, but goddamn does she do it in the most white-trash way possible. I can't tell you how many times she's made spaghetti with this shit and then acted like it was home-made because she added basil and a pinch of sugar to it.

my father couldn't make a good sauce to save his life.

my mother is a pretty good cook, but she does tend to use maggi fix shit as a basis for a lot of things. she can do it without it and she always improves on the stuff if she uses it though.

My mother was a home ec teacher, vocational cooking teacher, and chef. My dad is a farmer/rancher. So to say I grew up in a culture of good food is an understatement. I learned about food literally from the ground up.
I never even saw boxed mac and cheese until I went to college and saw a girl in my dorm make it. I distinctly remember being horrified. Nothing I ate growing up came out of a box. Mom even squeezed our own citrus juices every day. In the spring, summer, and early fall, all our produce came out of a huge garden. All our beef, lamb, and poultry we raised ourselves. We had milk goats for a time when I was a kid, but my parents had phased them out by the time I was a teenager. My dad grew wheat, oats, sorghum, alfalfa, and other grains and grasses (a lot of those were for feeding/grazing the animals, though). We had pear trees, blackberry bushes, rose hips, peach trees, and a pecan orchard (with about 30 pecan trees). We had a few creeks where we fished for bass and catfish, and would make regular trips to the coast to fish as well. Anyway, my food memories of my parents are idyllic. Mom is a fantastic cook, she can cook anything. Too bad I live thousands of miles away from them now. I miss all that.

Yeah, that's called economy cooking. Anyone of average incomes with a family to feed will end up having a casserole type dish of some sort once a week or so. My dad's a pretty decent cook. His main hobby us smoking/bbq/grilling/etc, so there's always a surplus of boston butt, brisket, and ribs in our house after a competition. After he got a Big Green Egg we've had a lot more smoked chicken and fish as of late, since it's so much more convenient.

My mom on the other hand, grew up with two parents who couldn't cook much of anything well at all, so all she ever makes outside of salad is baked chicken thighs or breasts. Thank god my father just automatically cooks the main protein for any given family function we have.

what utter horseshit. you use canned tomatoes, oil, onion, salt, basil, oregano and whatever you like anyway. Why reinvent the wheel. I like hunts or delmonte as a base. If you have hours to cook, sure it's nice to make your own sauce, but the result is basicly the same or worse. I ate at some friends home recently. Her "signature" home made marinara sauce. hunks of uncooked tomatoes (didn't even peel the things) slices of almost raw garlic, zucchini, twice the salt of seawater, and ground turkey that wasn't browned, homemade rolls that could double as baseballs, no butter- bad for you- and sangria made with 1 bottle cheap wine and kool-aid. I like stir fry and pasta primavera. not when I want marinara sauce.easiest way, start with a base you like, adjust. and for vegan/vegetarians, even the "meat flavored" ones? very few animals were harmed. it's like dollar store chicken and noddle soup at some point a chicken might have walked through it.

My dad was horrible. The only thing he could cook is barbeque. Everyday meals included spaghetti (so much fucking spaghetti. And it was always just angelhair + canned sauce.), boxed Macaroni and Cheese, and frozen or canned vegetables. My parents divorced, so I lived at my dad's house half the time and my mom's house the rest of the time. My mom could cook, and she got a boyfriend named Stefan who could really cook. Everything was made from scratch. Stefan made some pretty bitching Mac and Cheese, and my mommade the best Mashed Potatoes. I did get my mom to buy me a lot of frozen foods like hot pockets and tamales though, lol.

>Any reason people do this?

Well, I can think of certain times when you'd want to do that: for example, it's common to preheat the oven very hot when cooking a roast. You put it in for, say, 5 minutes at 475 then turn it down to 350 for the remainder of the cooking. That helps brown the outside. 350 is also a common general purpose temp for reheating food that's already been cooked.

But always setting it at 350 no matter what you're doing? Silly. And setting to 350 when following a recipe that explicitly calls for a different temp? bizzare.

My dad used to be a good cook. Now, he barely cooks anymore. When he does, it's really half-assed, crazy shit most of the time. I'm talking about pre-packaged everything. Powdered soup, powdered sauces, instant mash, instant rice, frozen supermarket lasagna, frozen spring rolls, frozen stuffed items, you name it. The only time he cooks from scratch anymore is when he wants to stroke his ego like when we have company over, he'll randomly whip out something last minute, or when we're invited to a potluck event.

I can see my mom's passion for cooking, but to put it blunt, she's such a fucking pussy. she's afraid of everything. She cuts majority of vegetables with a BUTTER KNIFE. I'm not expecting her to be fast, but most of the time she takes upto an hour just peeling and cutting a couple of potatoes for a stew. When meat is involved, it's always ground, because she says it's easier and no cutting involved. No matter how much I try to help her, she's afraid to try new things. She always follows a recipe exactly, afraid to eyeball or improvise ingredients. We only have white onions instead of red for a specific dish? She won't make it with white. Her cooking is severely bland, because she's so conscious about sodium intake after she read some "horrifying facts about sodium" on the internet. You could count the amount of salt she puts in dishes with your fingers. She also has this habit of buying things she can't prepare, and then calling me to help her cook it.

Two bags of these were my daily nutrition until I was 15. It was cheap, easy, children like it and my parents couldn't be bothered to actually bring something edible, they themselves lived on cheap alcohol. Sometimes they would "treat" themselves and eat up my "food". Then I had nothing, which brought me the habit of always eating the whole stock up before someone else could take it.

I was removed from my parents by youth care with 15 and am still experiencing the results. I had to learn everything anew, how to use fork and knives, what to eat, how to hold a stock, how to cook, I had to develop my tastebuds and not cringe at new flavours, everything.
This was five years ago, nowadays I like cooking, I like mediterranean food best but I'm still learning.

Most things would last OK, with only a slight decline in quality throughout the week. These were typically stir fries and pasta based dishes.

Other things aged really well. Shepherd's Pie actually got better as it got older. Same with her stews.

Other things started out shit and ended up inedible. I actually dreaded when she made steak. She would buy the cheapest cut of beef and cook it way too low for way too long. The thing would emerge from the grill with the interior color of OP's pic inside and out. It could only be cut with a serrated edge and I remember my jaw hurting from chewing so much.

Pretty basic dish.

Fry a nice piece of pork fillet for 2-3 minutes in a very hot pan on each side. Clean it first (like remove white strings etc) of course. Put some salt and pepper on it, put it in some tinfoil and add a few herbs you like if you want to and put it in the oven for about 20-30 minutes with 80-100°C.

Cook the fresh green beans for 4-5 minutes. Put them into ice cold water, wrap them with beacon like on the pic and fry them in a pan until the beacon is a bit brown.

Make some mashed potatoes.

For the sauce cut some clened mushrooms into slices, add a very tiny sliced little onion, fry it with some good oil until the onions begin to get some color, add a little bit white wine, a litte spoon of sugar, a cup of crème fraîche and some herbs you like.

Serve on a hot plate with the filet sliced and add some additional salt and fresh pepper if you like to.

Why are Americans in general so bad at cooking? I come from a typical American family and all they made were easy fix meals that came from a box
Other countries seem to have a lot of passion for cooking even if they aren't that wealthy. Americans have plenty of money but they cook on the shittiest ingredients as if they can barely get by

I wouldn't say my parents were top notch cooks but my mum was pretty good. She helped teach me a lot of making dishes when I became more independent. Plus she makes god-tier pasta dishes which has helped me eat cheap in university.

My dad on the other hand is quite the opposite. He has taught me a few small things that work well together but ever since his health scare he is very stubborn with food. Anything that is different from his usual menu or not pure carbs he will usually not eat. The countless times I've made dishes for him to help out he's thrown away because he rather eat cornflakes is crazy.

He's a massive hypocrite in the kitchen.
>Won't eat cheap processed meat for sandwiches
>Loves basic value processed frozen chicken and fish fillets
>States he's a good at making soups
>Refuses to use a hand blender or use any ingredients other than spinach, potato and salt
>Claims to only eat healthy food
>Lives on poor value cheese and raisins.

Hell even today he refused to buy my Granddad, who's very ill, unable to cook for himself and losing weight, white bread. He thought it would be too unhealthy for him despite him hating wholemeal. He had already lost a shit ton of weight and on caffeine pills, why would reducing sugar intake be helpful?

The worst thing is he refuses people cooking for themselves so when I'm home I'm stuck with pretty bad meals. My dad is the adult version of a picky child and a snobby health concious hipster. Pic related, it's similar to his "soup"

The pic is because we eat mostly Jamacian food. To be honest though, she knew how to cook pretty well.

The only thing she could not do under any circumstance was bake from scratch. Cookies would be burnt, Brownies would be black. That's where my Father came in. He worked at a Bakery when he was a kid, his first job at 16. They began teaching other to cook, that's how they spent most of their time together.

Cooking is the way my friends. Cooking is the way.

being Dominican means you eat this 5 times a week at lunch.
Meat varies but tends to be mostly fucking stewed chicken.
add avocados and tostones /fried ripe plantain and that's pretty much it.

Oh and salad consisting of lettuce, tomato and cabbage.

it ain't bad, my mom is very good at cooking dominican food, but don't let her cook anything else because she will bastardize it and not use a fucking recipe even if her life depended on it.

A lot of other countries have the "Traditional" family unit.
Father works
Mother stays home and takes care of shit
This kind of family unit allows for the time, care, and effort required to make good meals and because the wife has nothing else to do, a lot of them turn it into a hobby and thus start enjoying it.
North American culture has basically made it so that BOTH parents have to work just to keep living, so time becomes a luxury and something that SHOULD be fun and enjoyable becomes a chore, so they do the best they can as quickly as they can.

Mussels? with dates? and bitter melon? WHAT

and that pork stock looks bone free and was just a quick boil of sliced pork belly

I've never eaten anything salty with dates...Usually that shit goes in with sweet rice as a hot or cold dish.

Pork soup was done wrong so it was probably flavorless, and that goes well with the bitter melon, but add some sliced pickled mustard and ginger if you're not a fan of the bitterness.

My mother didn't know how to cook and only knew how to bake but picked up some stuff from my dad.
