Yes alot of people in Florida eat blue crab. When i go there to visit one of my family members they normally have blue crab with old bay seasoning with red potatoes and corn.

I'm in south west Florida and at certain times of the year (maybe just one, I don't know) they show up en masse at certain beaches in only a couple feet of water. I remember getting into a van with a bunch of people and going down to the beach as a kid and they were very easy to catch with just a net. They obviously have the typical crab traps too.

My dad's friend has a huge tank where he keeps the crabs he catches until they molt and he sells them to local restaurants as soft shells. They are extremely popular.

They have those in NY as well. But we mostly have the orange ones. Back when you were allowed to eat 1lb of food out of the Hudson we would trap those fuckers. Breddy Good.
BTW, you aren't even supposed to swim in the Hudson. it's fucking filthy

I live in Ohio and I know a place where I can get fresh blue crabs. One time I got some and fried them up and made a little sandwich with some tomatoes and greens. It was pretty good but honesty cleaning out the crabs really disgusted me. Enough that I've never bought more.

Maybe if they'd clean them for me at the market...

>> No.5616840

>>5616817

Since you fried them I'm assuming you mean soft shells. All you have to do is cut the face off and cut the lungs out, it's hardly disgusting and only takes a second with kitchen shears.

you can just lift up the top shell on either side they come off without problem.
I usually take off the tail as well since it's mostly shell.

>> No.5616862

>>5616851

If you look at the pic in the OP, you lift up the shell where it comes to a point on each side and the lungs are right underneath. Most people remove them because of their unpleasant texture, but if you don't mind them they are perfectly edible

>>5616840

I'm not the guy you're replying to, but I stir-fry crab Chinese style. That's normal crab, shell on--not soft shells. Yeah you have to peel it as you eat, but the shell adds a lot of flavor.

soft shell in tempura batter is god-tier as well

I like to steam boil and grill them, but my fav is gumbo. Fucking love them in gumbo.
Oh as for them being popular. I really don't know.

Yeah I'm familiar with that, but he said fry and also make a sandwich out of them, so it seemed like a soft shell thing

unless he picked cooked crabs to make a sandwich, to which I would have suggested buying picked crab meat if he's that disgusted by the process

Crab-bros I have a question.

I understand that some crabs, like alaskan king crab, you cook the legs like a lobster and then crack it to eat the meat.

I've never had a soft-shelled crab.

Is it literally the whole crab that has been cooked in some way so you can just slap it between some buns and eat it?

How do I cook crabs that I find in the supermarket next to the fish? They look too small to actually get any leg meat, so I'm wondering what exactly you do with them.

As a proud dweller of the chesepeake bay this fills me with so much hate. We catch those motherfuckers and blind them with old bay and steam them and eat them. Soft shell is bullshit that only sissies would eat

>> No.5621465

More like ignorance, not hate.
Chili crab isn't made with soft shell. That's full-on whole shell crabs in there. And the spices in that stuff make old bay taste like water in comparison.
