I've tried honeycrisp on multiple occasions and they were never any good. They were just the ones from the supermarket though, so I'll continue to reserve judgement.

Not the same guy, but I've been wondering about this for a while. "Red delicious" used to be my favourite, but it specifically had to be one of the locally grown ones (from Ontario). The imported ones from the US were always a deep shiny red and perfectly shaped, but tasted like nothing. The local ones were not really red at all in comparison, more like a streaky red-yellow-green, and no other apple matched that balance of sweetness and nuanced flavour. I then went to a pick-your-own farm, and I noticed that the trees with the ones I liked were specifically labelled "Delicious", while there were also trees labelled "Red Delicious". I read something online about "Delicious" being a separate type from "Red Delicious", so maybe those were what I actually liked. I've never seen these being sold in the states, or even outside of Ontario, then again it's not something I would pay much attention to when travelling.

unfortunately, like many apple varieties, they become overproduced as a result of success and huge farms keep doing everything they can to increase production
quality suffers and people keep buying because of name recognition
more and more of the proper strain is coming out, but I've always associated them with a deep red color, though typically more oblong shaped than the water sand disgusting ones
not sure what the deal is with the more varied colored ones you're getting, but all apples are grafted, so it might just be a localized mutation or hybrid

Golden Delicious is the money apple. I like them picked a little early.

The red delicious was the first big apple variety that got absolutely ruined by the big growers, in the 80's. In fact, because it got ruined so completely, the government had to bail out the Washington state apple industry, solely due to the overproduction of the red delicious and the subsequent economic collapse.

If you can find a starking delicious anywhere, that's basically what the red delicious was 40 years ago and it's at least 100x better. Rare as balls, though.
