Marketing is the main difference, I remember seeing a blind taste test where most people couldn't tell the difference.

Empirically, light is super-sweet (sweeter than regular) and zero seems less sweet (than regular coke), although that can be attributed to the fact that zero also seems to be more carbonized.

It's a historical thing. Conventionally 'diet' drinks were made by taking the standard formula and working out how to replace the sugar with artificial sweetners. Diet Coke was formulated from the ground up.
Coke Zero is, ironically, closer to the 'Diet' incarnation by being Coke Original with the sugar replaced by sweetner.

Diet Coke is the same flavor as New Coke from the '80s, with aspartame as the sweetener. It's sweeter than regular coke because that's how New Coke was, to combat pepsi in those stupid taste tests.

Zero is Classic Coke with a blend of aspartame and ace-k as sweetener. they cover up each other's aftertastes somewhat.

it's silly to think new coke failed because of its flavor, because it didnt have any, just like pepsi and original coke. when your flavor profiles are so dull and so similar to the competition's, placebo (and the marketing that inserts it) is king.

Pepsi's "Now I know why Coke did it!" ads even referred to coke copying pepsi's strategy of making sugar the main flavor of the drink instead of cola.

Coke Classic was just an equally smart marketing move in response to a bad situation.

When they first tried making diet coke, testers didn't think the flavor was up to snuff; so they created an entirely different formula for diet coke. Thus its unique flavor.

Coke zero is what happens when you recycle trashed ideas, and it tastes that way.

I drink the cherry flavors sometimes when the 12 packs are on sale. Personally, I think Diet Cherry Coke is a LOT fucking better than Cherry Coke Zero.

What I really wish they did was sell Diet Cherry Coke in two liters, fucking jews.

In my awesome opinion the difference is: Diet Coke taste like Diet Coke, ZERO sodas tend to taste more like the original sodas.

at least it should have less side effects than cancerous aspartame and co but it still leaves an unpleasant aftertaste and it's disgustingly sweeter than regular sugar
