Here's a picture of a nagashi somen machine. It's a tradition in the summer to make an elaborate open pipe system out of bamboo and let somen noodles flow in the water down the pipe, catching them on the way down. Since many people cannot do this, they can use these small machines to get a similar experience.

The water is necessary because somen noodles are very starchy and will stick together without it.

The only place I've found without going to an International Supermarket/Store is 7/11. Look for Yellow packaging with the name "Suppa Muuchou". Suppa/Kara muuchou do extra sour or spicy chips.

The sour plum flavoured chips are good too, but they have a salt n vinegar flavour covered with little british flags, royal guard and bigben.
