Hello Op sweetie, my dream kitchen is a modern edo period Japanese kind of look. I think pic related looks cute. I love this board i want to make friends. =0

Some kind of really long kitchen. Taking up an entire side of my house basically.

1 side would be almost entirely for baking, breads, cakes, etc. 1 side would be filled to the brim with regular cooking stuff plus ovens and stoves etc; maybe even a smoking cabinet or roast spit; then have some kind of really nice island in the middle of the room to do all kinds of stuff on.

It'll never happen though, not unless I win the lottery in NJ

The black and red is a misfire there. If they're going to go with that natural wood ceiling, they could probably keep the black countertop, highlights, and fixtures, just so long as they went with a lighter but still warm wood tone for the cabinetry and walls. Also, having a gas stove and no hood vent in a small kitchen where everything is wood is going to be a disaster long-term. That shit is either going to get all cracked and fucked due to dryness, or warped and fucked due to moisture. Whoever put that together needs to be fired.

I'd like a decently sized kitchen with enough room to move around in and enough space to comfortably prep and cook food, but nothing ridiculous like 20 cupboards filled with cook and dinnerware you only use once a year.

And nothing that'd be a pain in the ass to dust or clean. Non white kitchen would be preferred. Wouldn't mind an island to prep/sit at and having it open/be connected to a living room and dining room space would be great as well. One big space with low dividers where needed. God yes, in a proper stone house with good wooden floors not covered in shitty carpet. A spacious kitchen with counters on opposing sides and a a little island in the middle, not too big so it gets in the way but just big enough. Next to the oven and the stove the cupboards are doorless so i can see all the good pots and pans my grandma gave me.

At the far end is a big walk in pantry, big enough to also store the fridge and freezer in on one side, with plenty of shelves and drawers. And on one side a glass door open out into a little contained kitchen garden where I grow herbs and some other things.

with granite, yeah you have to be a little careful putting delicate things down, and while I've heard that you can chop on them without a cutting board without fear of damaging them, I'd be afraid of blunting my knives. Kitchen designer here. Marble is not a good choice in a kitchen. It's a soft stone and microporous so scratches easily and can stain. Reconstituted stone and Granite is a lot better but I wouldn't chop directly on any benchtop as you can still cause chipping of even a granite surface.

None of these really embody my dream kitchen. But yeah, lots of space, an island (no range or sink in/on it though), lots of storage/counter space, Currently, I do a lot of prep work on the kitchen table, then have to wipe down the table and then set it for serving. It's a little annoying to have to do that.

Quartz or granite counter tops are preferable and a nice stainless steel sink for cleaning purposes. Gas burners are desired as well... though it's hard to imagine someone picking electric ones by choice. I feel that very specific features are ultimately novelties like in-built grills or griddles or anything like that.

Avoid granite at all costs. It's way too rough and dark. You want your working surfaces to be light coloured and flat as the Dutch countryside. With granite you waste tons of time cleaning the bugger after you're done working or even washing off.

Source: I spent months at this Renaissance villa with granite sinks, cutting boards vegetable washing installations... At first you're all amazed at how gorgeous it looks, then you realize all sorts of crap gets stuck in the granite (most of which you don't notice) & you'll keep washing off for another hour.

I've thought about this. One of the ways I motivate myself to try to keep at trying to make money, is I've designed my dream home and all it would contain. For that reason, this is going to be ridiculously extravagant.

Large oven, pizza oven, magnetic knife wall, slushee machine, cotton candy maker, deep fryer, high quality dishwasher, numerous air-tight containers, blenders and food processors, extra capacity red stainless steal refrigerator with one of those electronic panels that automatically sends my grocery lists to stores. Massive cold-storage deep freezer, stocked full of meats, ice creams, and so on.

Trash compactor, large sink with a stainless steal extendable hose. A small television and dedicated desktop for watching cooking shows and looking up recipes, one of those special heat lamp tables they use to keep cooked food hot. Exquisite liquor cabinet filled with exotic liquids making it look like a wall of potions. Brewing vat for making my own soft drinks.

A large kitchen islane with room for 8 cushy red stools on either side. A length of table set aside specifically for gimmicky infomercial cooking tools. Movie theater popcorn machine.

Depends on the granite - some has very fine fractures - invisible but allowing staing. Others granites are much better. Mostly sealing once a year is enough. By comparison, marble is terrible and marks easily. I've had both in my own kitchens. Engineered stone is softer but very hard to stain.

What do you mean by 'quartz' tops because if you are talking about engineered stone, it's crushed quartz with about 7% resin.

Oh and stop trolling; I used to design on average about 4 kitchens a week and my business used to average 2-4 kitchens installed a week. Custom, not fixed size flatpacks.

You are objectively wrong. It doesn't matter how "high quality" the granite is when it comes to staining. It is a porous surface that requires constant maintenance that most homeowners are too lazy to keep up with.

Of course quartz is engineered. It's still a vastly superior surface (more durable, less staining) when it comes to kitchen counters. Stop buying into - or trying to sell to idiots' tastes - with this whole "granite is da best hurr hurr" thing. Just because people think they want it doesn't mean they're right, it means they're fucking stupid and buy into hype vs. researching things themselves.

Now, for the maybe 10% of homeowners you work with who are responsible enough to maintain the granite, sure, feel free. Glad someone respects the material enough to take care of it. God knows I never fucking see it myself.

Yeah, but most of us don't want to grow bacteria on our cutting boards. After all, wood inhibits bacterial growth.

If you want to grow bacteria on your work surfaces, I would suggest plastic. I would bet that bacteria would last much better on granite and similar surfaces than they will on wood.

What would be nice is to have two large walkin pantries. One pantry would be for food items and one pantry for cooking utensils and dinnerware. If just one pantry, use it for both.

You should just need a limited number of cabinets, with windows of course, to be used primarily for things that get used very frequently.

Also, instead of the usual types of shelves in the pantry, I really like metal wiring shelves. And if the metal wiring shelves are on wheels, they would be easy to move out when cleaning.

>Wood dries more slowly than plastic, so wouldn't wood be a better candidate for bacterial sexual recreation?

Wood has some pretty good natural defenses against bacteria. I read once that one defense that also applies to dead wood is that the cells have sharp points and edges that can prick holes in bacteria resulting in them losing the contents and dying.

From what I understand, the research clearly shows that bacteria die far quicker on wood than on plastic and those that get under the surface do not reproduce.

Dishwashing detergents help remove oils and and bits of foods from tableware. They do not sterilize anything unless your dishwasher has a sanitizing cycle and you use that instead of a regular cycle.

If you don't clean a cutting board, you are going to be harboring bacteria with either wood or plastic. Fortunately, I've only known one person who believed you should never clean a cutting board.

I guess if you have a sanitizing setting and you use that between every use (even in the same meal) you are likely to be okay. If you are cutting raw chicken on it, wash it off in the sink, and then prepare your salad on it, you are much better off with a good wooden cutting board.

A quick Google search finds plenty on wooden cutting boards.

From http://faculty.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/faculty/docliver/Research/cuttingboard.htm

>Our safety concern was that bacteria such as Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella, which might contaminate a work surface when raw meat was being prepared, ought not remain on the surface to contaminate other foods that might be eaten without further cooking. We soon found that disease bacteria such as these were not recoverable from wooden surfaces in a short time after they were applied, unless very large numbers were used. New plastic surfaces allowed the bacteria to persist, but were easily cleaned and disinfected. However, wooden boards that had been used and had many knife cuts acted almost the same as new wood, whereas plastic surfaces that were knife-scarred were impossible to clean and disinfect manually, especially when food residues such as chicken fat were present.

...

>Although the bacteria that have disappeared from the wood surfaces are found alive inside the wood for some time after application, they evidently do not multiply, and they gradually die. They can be detected only by splitting or gouging the wood or by forcing water completely through from one surface to the other. If a sharp knife is used to cut into the work surfaces after used plastic or wood has been contaminated with bacteria and cleaned manually, more bacteria are recovered from a used plastic surface than from a used wood surface.

Even though wood cutting boards are very hard, they're also porous so they absorb everything and anything you put on them, including bacteria. They require oiling to keep the wood in good condition -- the oil helps somewhat by creating a barrier against moisture. And of course, after using them, wood cutting boards require thorough cleaning, drying, and re-oiling. Even with all the care and upkeep wood cutting boards require, they are the best for your knives, because the wood does not dull the blade. If you prefer wood cutting boards, consider using them for cutting only vegetables, herbs and breads.

A thoughtful reader kindly sent me a fascinating article on cutting boards. Originally published in the Feb. 6, 1993 edition of Science News, the article describes research claiming that wooden cutting boards possess some sort of bacteria-killing properties, thus making them less likely to contaminate food than plastic or acrylic cutting boards. "Pathogens prefer plastic," the article declares.

Nearly twenty years later, however, experts are still recommending nonporous plastic cutting boards, and local health departments continue to prohibit the use of wooden cutting boards in commercial foodservice.

So what happened? A careful reading of the article reveals the disconnect between what the researchers observed and the conclusions they drew from those observations. It's a great example of why it's never a good idea to let someone else do your thinking for you — because scientists make mistakes just like anyone else.

The claim was based on an experiment in which wooden cutting boards were infected with common food-borne pathogens and then allowed to sit overnight. The next morning, researchers found that "99.9 percent of the bacteria were unrecoverable and presumed dead." Presumed dead? That's quite a leap, especially when, by the researchers' own admission, "We've not recovered the little critters' dead bodies." They did allow for the possibility that, instead of dying, the "little critters" may have simply taken refuge within the nooks and crannies of the porous wood, where they would then be free to breed like — well, like bacteria. And since we know that bacteria can live on a cutting board for up to 60 hours, that wooden cutting board could be hosting an entire colony of pathogens by then. "As best we can tell, that isn't going to happen," one of the scientists said, though he did not specify why he didn't think it would happen.

As for what mechanism or agent might be responsible for wood's alleged antibacterial powers, the researchers admitted that they had no clue. One begins to see why this particular piece of "science" didn't exactly blow the doors off the conventional thinking on food safety.

Finally, though, the kicker: One of the microbiologists responsible for the study shares his recommended technique for cleaning wooden cutting boards: "A good wipe will do fine – and if you forget to wipe the board, you probably won't be too bad off." The entire 1993 article is available here. (My thanks to the reader who sent it to me.)

If you cook a lot, they are always on and ready to cook.

Depending on your configuration, you have several different ovens at different temperatures. So you can cook several different things in the ovens at the same time.

You also have two hobs on top of the main unit, one for simmer and one for boil.

Some models can also act as a water heater for the house or the kitchen.

In cooler climates, they can keep the kitchen at a temperature better for raising bread.

Over the years, there have been Aga cookers that could use a number of different fuel sources such as coal, wood, fuel oil, gas, and electricity.

Easy to use.

In the case of an Aga cooker, it should have been set up and maintained by people well trained in the devices. I would think that the temperature settings would be pretty much right on. If you prepare the food specifically for an Aga (i.e. to use the temperature settings found in an Aga), it should work quite well.

The kitchen and the dining room are in the basement with the dining room open to the first floor above.

If you look at the picture, you can see a railing on the other side of which is where it looks down into the dining room. The door is to the right of the house (looking from the front of the house) and there is a walkway along that side of the house so you can walk past the dining room below.

I got to wondering once how great it would be to actually put the kitchen where the dining is so that when you walked in you could see down into the kitchen.
