Originally went vegan after watching undercover investigations of factory farms, like this: www.meatvideo.com

Then it took me a few years to fully acknowledge that it wasn't only factory farms that abused animals. http://www.peacefulprairie.org/PPS-Lit/Farming_Screen.pdf Was difficult to accept because at the time I was working with local farmers and I was actually considering becoming one myself. Their disrespect for the animals did start to bother me though and I realized I was in the wrong field.

But in general it's just ridiculous to eat animal products and people mostly do it out of habit because it's just always been that way for them. For most people there is no reason to eat animal products and it's been pretty well established that it's healthiest to eat little to no animal products.

It's a bit misleading though. The biggest and most consistent claim against meat being unhealthy is commonly linked to burned/charred pieces of meat rather than the meat itself. Boiling, stewing, or other methods can circumvent the effects and some meat, particularly those with less fat such as poultry or seafood, have little if at all.

The healthiest diet would be the one that offers the most variety, and having meat is part of that. When diets over fixate on one in sacrifice of others, it naturally limits your nutritional sources (and for me one of the smaller source of happiness in life). We're omnivores for a reason and our bodies have adapted quite well to many things.

I agree meat and carbs is typically overemphasized in the western diet, but that doesn't make either the bad guy. If there's anything to shun, it should be those who are outright hostile- whether against vegetables or meat.

No. Most claims about meat being unhealthy have nothing to do with how it's cooked. It's what makes up the meat, like proteins. IGF-1, Neu5Gc, arachidonic acid, as some examples...

>> No.5548409

>>5548332
Arachidonic acid is an important cellular signalling agent. It also makes up ~20% of the fat in your brain and is used in treatment of Alzheimer's...
Your body also synthesizes/breaks down IGF1 all the time (regulated by the same pathways as insulin, stimulated by GH) and it's pretty important for growth (recombinant IGF1 is used to treat dwarfism).

I'm sure that excess amounts can be harmful, as with anything, but your body certainly needs both of these molecules (either synthesized by the body or from a dietary source) and can break them down in reasonable amounts perfectly well.

>Source:Homocysteine, circulating vascular cell adhesion molecule and carotid atherosclerosis in postmenopausal vegetarian women and omnivores. Atherosclerosis 2006 184(2):356 – 362.

>The present study aimed to compare the presence and severity of carotid atherosclerosis (CA), and the blood levels of Vitamin B12, homocysteine (Hcy) and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) between 57 healthy postmenopausal vegetarians and 61 age-matched omnivores. Carotid atherosclerosis, as measured by ultrasound, was found to be of no significant difference between the two groups. I don't know shit about nutrition, but at least I know how to read and form my own conclusions.

1. Neu5Gc- From mammalian origin, but isn’t found in poultry and negligible amounts in fish. Likely from excessive red meat consumption. Also, in the paper that was linked, it was discussing moreso of Neu5Gc as an immunogenic response rather than a cause or link to cancer. Of course, it also says that accumulation of Neu5Gc helps tumors escape immunosurveillance response, but this can be used as a form of detection and therapy for the fact that humans don’t produce it naturally. Thus, if we are able to find where the anti-Neu5Gc antipodies cluster together, we can detect it quicker and create a more beneficial therapy.

2. AGEs- Again, primarily from charred or burnt pieces of meat, more specifically red meat. Which can be circumvented through other moist forms of cooking like boiling and stewing. Interesting to note that one of the studies containing a table of selected foods has French fries contaiing more AGEs than canned tuna or microwaved chicken. They also claim oils and nuts were high in dAGEs too. Suppose the fat contact as well as the cooking method plays a rather large part.

3. This study is quite misleading, actually. The study simply finds that the typical omnivorous diet is too high in fat and protein compared to vegetarian diets (which, yeah, it would be since meat and dairy products are the biggest contributor to both) and that is what contributes to negative views. But it was done in a limited trial, over two weeks, and concluded with participant surveys. This could easily be explained by the perceived health benefits from social and cultural constructs, rather than anything biological. Like a psychological placebo effect of ‘I’m eating so healthy~’. And I’m assuming their participants are from random population, which means they’re likely to eat like crap to begin with which emphasizes the placebo effect even moreso.

>the link doesn’t even mention arachidonic acid...
4. Arachidonic acid is an essential fatty acid for the brain, muscles, and liver. Btw, despite that note, there are mixed studies that state supplementing dietary Arachidonic acid may be beneficial, the lack of which stunts growth and immune response and the excess leading to cardiovascular or neurological issues. All agree that there is a balance.

5. Abstract that was linked didn’t even mention meat, just a high-fat diet effecting serum cholesterol and increased coronary artery risk. Again, high-fat meals may cause your arteries to have fatty plaque. This isn’t against meat, but against excessive high fat diets.

If the rest of the list is as skewed and biased as the first five, I’m quitting now. There’s no point if you’re not going to even read the articles and conclusion to your own damn sources.

The key to nutrition is balance, moderation, and variety along with good exercise to make sure your body is in top physical shape to make the best use of it. Meat can be eliminated, but that narrows down the variety and nutritional sources. You can argue moral and ethical reasons for vegetarian, but don't pull the health card without knowing full well that humans are omnivores. Claiming all meat is bad all the time, when we have developed an evolutionary history of eating it and thriving in it, is simply your own bias.

You fucking morons. You don't understand anything about IGF-1 or arachidonic acid. Just because it's in our bodies and just because we use it doesn't mean it's beneficial for us.
"Protein intake, especially animal protein, is known to be the major dietary determinant of circulating IGF-1 levels. When we consume animal protein, the body increases its production of a hormone called IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1). IGF-1 is one of the body’s important growth promoters early in life, but later in life IGF-1 promotes the aging process. IGF-1 has been shown to promote the growth, proliferation and spread of cancer cells, and elevated IGF-1 levels are linked to increased risk of several cancers.3-7 Our society’s obsession with over-consuming protein is a contributing factor to our epidemic of cancer. In addition to the issue of IGF-1 and cancer, excess protein may negatively affect calcium stores, kidney function and bone health, and promote cardiovascular events.8-10"

Not the guy you're talking to, but AA and IGF-1 are a lot like cholesterol in that they're necessary in the body but you want as little of them as possible. It's impossible to not have the needed amount, so all you need to worry about is having too much

Personally, I think a few animal products here and there infrequently isn't going to affect anything, but most of the science world shows us that the more whole plant foods you eat and the less animal products you eat, the better your health will be. You can be an "omnivore" and still eat a primarily plant-based diet.

>>5548313

>The healthiest diet would be the one that offers the most variety, and having meat is part of that

Variety is good, but when people say to have a variety of foods in your diet, it's because different plant foods have different beneficial compounds known as phytochemicals. There's over 100,000 of these compounds in plants around the world; some we can't absorb and some we can, many are beneficial in a variety of health-promoting ways though some are neutral. Some of the most well-known are beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin and anthocyanins (the antioxidant found in blueberries). This concept doesn't apply to animal products since they don't have any phytochemicals.

Your argument literally stems from links and sources that you don't even read or understand in it's entirety. That first link alone I was able to discredit based entirely on reading the abstracts that were provided because he never even linked to the study, just put something in APA format and it was passable as truth. Everything else was just copied and pasted.

Stop dismissing me. Address the points. Meat may be bad in excess, but so is every other goddamn thing. Fat and protein are necessary aspects for a healthy human being and meat/animal products are some of the best ways to get it. Micro nutrients are also necessary aspects of a healthy human being and vegetables/fruits/plants are the best ways to get it. A balance is necessary, not absolute exclusion. Certainly not creating outright lies and misconstructions.

Also hate to play this card as well, but it also depends on the person and their circumstances/goals. A person with a genetic disposition to his cholesterol? Would benefit from eating more plant based meals because, by nature, plants are less likely to contribute. A person who needs to gain weight or muscle? Would benefit from adding more meat or calorie dense animal products.

>Being vegan doesn't do a damn thing to solve it
The thing about it is, politics is mandatory. The example you use is fallacious because all cultures have some form of government. Meat is an industry. We can fix it precisely by not participating in it. It emits more Co2 than all forms of transportation combined, and that's not mentioning the vats of toxic shit

William C. Roberts, the editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Cardiology, also agrees with that idea

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3603726/

>Although most humans consider themselves carnivores or at least omnivores, basically we humans have characteristics of herbivores
>Atherosclerosis is easily produced experimentally in herbivores (monkeys, rabbits) by giving them diets containing large quantities of cholesterol (egg yolks) or saturated fat (animal fat). Indeed, atherosclerosis is one of the easiest diseases to produce experimentally, but the recipient must be an herbivore. It is not possible to produce atherosclerosis in carnivores

Depends on where you can get it. I can get a gallon of soy milk from an asian grocery store for a little under $4. So only maybe a $1-1.50 more than normal milk. Vegan margarine is about the same as regular butter or margarine. But yeah, all the feaux meats and cheese are bs. I eat dairy cheese though because I really like cheese on sandwiches, and I'm too lazy to look for fake cheese. Seitan is a really cheap meat substitute if you make it yourself ($7 for 22 oz bag, which makes a shitload). Other than that, rice, potatoes, lentils, and beans are cheap as hell and very filling.

I also like Follow Your Heart Vegan Mozzarella baked on pizza and lasagna. Would probably be good melted on a sandwich too. Wasn't a fan of their cheddar though when I tried it. "Vegan food" is expensive, but food that is vegan is usually very cheap. Most of what you'd be eating is beans and whole grains, and those are the cheapest staple foods in the world, especially dry and in bulk.

Pic related, arguably one of the healthiest foods you can eat, 30 bucks for 4-6 months worth of dinner. And that's organic, with shipping charges included. Your local stores probably have even cheaper selections.

I know this might be hard to understand, but vegans can be vegans and still eat junk. Veganism is by definition only the act of abstaining from the consumption of animal products. That's it. That is all you have to do to be vegan.
