I think the biggest issue would be that given it's so uncommon in the US that simply opening up a meat pie shop would probably be doomed to fail. It would take a colloborative effort between an already established butcher and a bakery and starting off with a handful a day as an item sold on the side (at the butcher.)

Also it seems like all of the bakeries that open up in the US these days aren't being opened by the type of people that would be interested in such a collaboration. It's moreso the hipster fat vegetarian chicks in their mid 20s that make cutesy cupcakes opening up every fucking bakery these days.

Even in the old school bakeries it seems the most meat you'll find is inside of a ham or turkey and cheese croissant. At most a small lunch menu with sandwiches.

I suppose we have both kinds in england, but it would be disappointing to go into a bakery over here and not see a selection of hot and cold meat pies, sausage rolls, and other pastry-meat combinations including our beloved pasties.

A meat pie and gravy to most other cultures sounds extremely bland, but it depends entirely on what is inside that pie.

close, but no cigar. more of our cuisine is based of classic french, if you'd believe it. Lots of german, sure, especially in our modern burger hotdog culture, but Southern and especially Creole (big surprise there) are very french in nature. Chili is arguably a purely (US) American dish as well; even if it is made mostly with South American spices, it is made with different techniques. what about Native American cookery? are you willing to neglect pemmican as a valid dried/cured meat? shit man don't start arguments you can't win.

Also there is always one episode in every american sitcom revolving around us or our accents.

I guess being proud of your heritage is a bad thing. Also calling yourself "american" is in bad taste, because of the "real" americans, you know, the natives. Most americans are proud to be american, but we are also proud of our ancestry, because thats part of what being an american is. unless youre a native you descended from immigrants. now i know you guys are probably aware of all the americans that appear in british television and how your culture has pretty much meshed with ours to the point that you can see a McDonalds from the Tower of London.

Point being, pull your head out of your arse and realize that being multi-cultured IS our culture.

though i will admit that i find it annoying that Brits are used every time a foreign accent is needed for a movie. though from what i hear british actors are much cheaper and tend to actually have classical training.

Because everyone is american. People like to identify with something a bit more unique. The US is large enough that regions are populated from the same regions in Europe. Where I live its mostly people of Germanic and Norwegian decent. People are proud of that and their heritage still shows through in the cooking, the names of places, the festivals, etc. Just because you don't understand the complexity of American culture doesnt mean you need to mock it and try to apply a label to it so your simple mind can grasp at something you can actually understand. Plus, you know, the natives. If you call yourself an American they tend to get touchy, so for the sake of political correctness people tend to specify. Not that you'd know anything about that, because you only have the narrowest view of our world and you think you know it already.

Americans riot for sports, at least *ahem* certain sections of the population who might be predisposed to like basketball.

The actual point is, the characterisation of football hooliganism in the UK as a national epidemic is outdated, and what there is is certainly not exceptional in international terms. In trying to include other causes you're just shifting the goal posts on your previous statement. And you don't want to shift the goal posts anon, you'll start a riot.

>Are people in the UK unused to this kind of friendly behavior?
Depends largely on where in the UK you go. From what I've seen, people from here in the north of England, or the west country or Wales, tend to be pretty friendly.

You always get the occasional miserable sod wherever you go (especially in cities) but I'm told there are a lot more sour faces in London than anywhere else in Britain, and London tends to be where tourists go when they visit.

I wish more foreign visitors would come up to Yorkshire, there's more character in the people and landscape, and we're much friendlier.

>British dishes that Americans haven't heard of:
Have Americans heard of Pot Noodle? A lot of British foods I'm thinking of are common in the USA but with a different name. What we call "Flapjack" Americans call "Granola," for example.

My overwhelming friendliness can be a bit much I understand, but this is online, where my lack of respect for personal space doesnt have any real effect.

I'd love to visit London, but perhaps I'll go somewhere less tourist-filled.
Also, not American, but up here in Canada I've seen Pot Noodle. Assuming you mean those little cups of microwaveable ramen.

Nope, never seen pot noodle here in the US, and I have been through every asian market in the area. Haven't visited the local British market yet though, I'll have to try it out. For some reason a small market specializing in British imports opened across town, wasn't aware of any brits in my area but I'm kinda excited to check it out.

Londoner here. I went to Yorkshire and people literally stopped dead in the street to turn and stare at me, just because I had a London accent. It was one of the most bizarre things I've ever encountered

I can't really comment on it being "more friendly", honestly it was about the same, just a lot more sheltered. It depends a lot on where you go in London too

Same here in the states. The attitude can change completely just by changing streets, and people tend to gawk at people with unfamiliar accents or appearances.

I think London has the obvious tourist attractions but somewhere like York is practically a museum in itself with the old architecture and stuff. There are some great museums there too.

Thing is, you probably will cause a stir with your accent if you go somewhere that doesn't get many visitors from abroad, as opposed to London where you'll just be another transatlantic visitor.

If you go up north and a re Canadian, wear a Canadian flag or something, you'll be better received by some of the less enlightened locals than if they thought you were American.
