Depends, are you the US Tax Department?

The other one that keeps getting people's jimmies rustled are cucumbers - its cousins in the melon section are considered fruits and the squash/pumpkin section are considered vegetables.

Botanically speaking a fruit produced from angiosperms are a group of ovaries with seeds inside (really watered down definition) so yes, it's a fruit.

In terms of it being a "fruit" like an apple or orange, I still consider it more of a vegetable.

They are both a fruit and berry botanically speaking.

"The botanical definition of a berry is a fleshy fruit produced from a single ovary. Grapes and avocados are two common examples."

"In botany, a fruit is a part of a flowering plant that derives from specific tissues of the flower, one or more ovaries, and in some cases accessory tissues. Fruits are the means by which these plants disseminate seeds. Many of them that bear edible fruits, in particular, have propagated with the movements of humans and animals in a symbiotic relationship as a means for seed dispersal and nutrition, respectively; in fact, humans and many animals have become dependent on fruits as a source of food."
-Source Wikipedia

In a culinary context, it is often used more like a vegetable. It all depends how you're going to use it. Since this is a cooking board the answer is vegetable. In /an/, /sci/ it would be a fruit, a berry.

It's a fruit. So are olives, avocados, peppers, and coconuts.

>> No.5520981

I call it a vegetable because some french fucks 200 years ago thought of it as a vegetable.

It has nothing to do with reality. It's sort of like a religion except it matters even less because it doesn't pretend to tell us something essential about the human condition.

>> No.5521000

i started considering them fruit after i started gardening and grew my first tomatoes.

them and peppers, cucumbers, melons, squash.

botanical definitions became more important than culinary definitions.

There was a late 1890s Supreme Court decision on whether tomato was a fruit or vegetable.

It made it that far because some sneaky guy was importing tomatoes and the taxes (or teriffs or whatever) were different if you were importing a fruit or vegetable. The guy argued that tomato was a fruit, but the government said it was taxed as a vegetable and has always been taxed as a vegetable. So it made it to the supreme court.

And the court ruled that it was indeed a fruit, but for the purposes of taxes, the government considered it a vegetable

He could trade rabbit meat for all sorts of goods and favours. Rabbits are friends and food.

copy pasta:

>potato chips
Yes, it is made from a vegetable. There are two types of potato chips. There is a (usually) cold potato chip, also called a potato crisp, which is made from a very thin slice of potato. There are also hot potato chips, also called a fries, which are made from strips of potato.
>popcorn
popcorn is a fruit because corn is a fruit. The botanical definition of fruit is: "The flowering, ripened ovary of a plant that contains seeds". Corn definitely falls into this category, as corn kernels ARE seeds. As a matter of fact, ALL grains are botanical fruits. A lot of botanically fruits are not even edible and some are poisonous.

So, since popcorn are seeds, they are essentially a component of fruit (as all seeds are).

The word "vegetable" does not have a scientific definition. Botanists do not use the word because it is not part of their nomenclature. Broccoli, carrots, celery, potatoes, lettuce.... or anything else you can think of that is normally considered to be a vegetable, are NOT categorized as vegetables in botany.

The term "vegetable" is a generic, culinary term. It simply means "an edible, savory plant". The word "fruit" also has generic, culinary definition. A fruit is a sweet, edible, fleshy structure from a plant.

A chef does not typically use corn (or popcorn) in sweet dishes. So, a chef considers popcorn to be a vegetable. Same with tomatoes, which are considered to be vegetables in the culinary world. Rhubarb and pumpkin are used in both sweet and savory dishes, so a chef considers these to be both fruits and vegetables.

Popcorn can be considered both a fruit and a vegetable, depending on your perspective.

>> No.5523889

>>5523882

"Fruit" and "vegetable" can both be identified by botanic definitions though. Fruit is, like you said, ovary of the plant, whereas a vegetable is a plant itself. A tomato is a fruit, if the plant the tomato grew from were edible then the tomato plant would be a vegetable. The people who make up categories for these things don't have any reasoning for why they put something in one category, it's just "I feel like it's a vegetable"
