Stella has been tampered with. Avoid it.

The Carrefours outside Bruges are tiny (with the exception of the one in St-Kruis, 1 km out of town). Bruges itself is a horrendous tourist trap. Beer prices at the Bruges Colruyt store however:
Abbey beer: http://www.collectandgo.be/cogo/nl/branch/391/
Trappist: http://www.collectandgo.be/cogo/nl/branch/392/
Geuze: http://www.collectandgo.be/cogo/nl/branch/393/
Regional beer: http://www.collectandgo.be/cogo/nl/branch/394/

Slightly more expensive and more difficult to find are the specialized beer shops, however you have the advantage of larger choice. This is where I get my beer: http://www.dehopduvel.be/engels/bieren.html (in the centre of Ghent). Some beers on the list like Oerbier, Orval and La Trappe 4 should be marked **

Cont. Then again, there are a number of really tasty Finnish brews out there. Two that come to mind right off the bat are Sinebrykoff Porter (baltic porter) and Beerhunters Mufloni CCCCC IPA, which is an American style IPA. Well balanced and surprisingly sweet. There's also Laitilan Kievari Imperiaali, which is a pretty solid brew if you don't mind the alcohol. I've got a question about beers in bottles, how do I drink them correctly?

I know that's a pretty retarded question, but it seems like whenever I drink them, atleast once, I will drink it and then all the sudden it just fucking explodes and bubbles up really bad sometimes spilling from the inside-out or leaving me with suds and not actual drink.

If you're American I'm assuming this is your first experience with anything that's not pale lager. So expect a thicker, more bitter and heavier feel. Also expect a slight burnt aftertaste.

Guinness isn't as bad as some people make it out to be but it's pretty average. If you like it try Murphy's Irish Stout.

Besides this also check out some wheat beers. I feel if you're looking to start drinking beer for anything other than the buzz wheat beers are the way to start.

While there's nothing actually awful about this beer, it is certainly no better than "fair." It is watery, bland in flavor, inconsistent in body/head ratio, and it lacks richness or complexity of any kind. And, like anything else made by Guinness, it is overpriced and under-balanced.

Guinness can be enjoyable as a table beer when eating bangers and mash or shepherd's pie... that's the only way I can approve of it being drunk on its own. Or you can always use it as a mixer for Irish car bombs or cider-stouts. Those are my suggestions for what you do with your sixer.

Pale lager is everything that you get for cheap. Buds, Miller, Corona, Coors etc. Everything what''s not malt liquor and chep you can bet it's pale lager. Or lager if you wish.

If you get it Yuengling is a good baseline beer. It's the first marginally decent pale lager out there.

If you want a taste familiar to the Buds and coronas you could try Pilsner.

Just don't try IPAs and high abv stouts from the off and almost anything else is fine.

The good thing about beer is that the difference between the shit and good stuff is only 5 bucks so you can always try and discard.

No. There are plenty of better beers and some better stouts out there that can be bought with the same amount of cash you'd spend on a six-pack of Guinness draught.

>> No.5492790

>>5492780
Murphy's was just a suggestion since it's easily available and quite different to Guinness. If you like both you're probably a stout person.

I feel you have to rise through the ranks of beer gradually. I've had some great beer during my college drinking days that I didn't appreciate at all.

I think drinking an imperial stout while starting out is a waste of time.

I'd go from mass manufactured to imported mass manufactured to Sam Adams/Sierra Nevada to craft and good European beer.

I appreciate where you're coming from. Working in bars, I've met a lot of bartenders/servers/bouncers/etc who have your frame of mind when they try introducing beer to a younger relative or significant other who has no experience--and a lot of them will suggest the same kind of progression as you have here.

My opinion (from experience) has shown me that if an inexperienced beer drinker is led to a complex specialty beer or a double IPA, then what you've said will typically happen. They'll be overwhelmed and uninterested. I've therefore tried to find good beers that are decently priced and do their specific job well without being "too much." And I should have made such suggestions in the first place.

If this guy >>5492772 is still reading this thread, I hope you try both methods. Give Murphy's a shot, and check out the other Guinness variants. You can always walk into a bar and ask if they can introduce you to some good beers. There's nothing wrong with saying you're inexperienced or trying to expand your palette, and if you're in a decent establishment they'll offer you a tasting of some different drafts before taking you to the beer cooler. Even if they don't have everything on draft, most places will assemble a mix-and-match sixer for a fair price.

If you find that you like stouts, I suggest you try Barney Flatts, Founders Breakfast Stout, Left Hand Milk Stout, or (as this dude >>5492790 suggested) Sierra Nevada Stout and Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout/Organic Chocolate Stout. If you like the general flavor of Guinness/Murphy's, the beers listed above will give you a varied, delicious range of flavors for you to choose from and work off of.

Americans seem to hate it. I'm not American, I've never had it in America, but they say the further from Ireland it gets the worse it tastes. America is quite far from Ireland so do the math.

It's one of the first stouts ever made but it's no longer necessarily the best ever made (no surprise because the competition is so strong). It's also too expensive for what you get. I still like it though because it has a very unique taste. When other stout taste like stout Guinness taste like Guinness. The stronger versions of it is probably tastier and better value.

In the can it's alright as a beginner stout, like others said it's not super strong as far as stouts go so it's a good way to figure out if you like the style before diving in fully but for the price it's not worth it. The foreign extra stout (imported) is the best variant you can get in my opinion, but still not really worth it as a go-to beer.

Got fucking wasted with my dad because he took me to a fancy ale pub and kept ordering rounds of the Rochefort 10 (even though they were almost £10 a bottle)

Worth it despite the hangover of death. I should have known that high strength Belgian beers are not to be trifled with.

Definitely top-tier but I can't afford it.

Sometimes I get a bottle of 10 to complement whatever swill I'm drinking.

The bar I work at has 12 kegs and we alternate cleaning the tavern heads and lines twice a week. We normally go through kegs pretty quickly (twice a day for the most popular ones, every week or so for the least popular ones). As long as they're kept cold they can last longer than a month no problem.

If you want something reasonably similar you might have an easier time tracking down Ballast Point Sculpin. It's not quite as good, but they've approached the style well

Oh, I've had Sclupin plenty of times. I'm pretty familiar with IPA/DIPA's. Heard Topper was one of the best, so naturally I'd love to try it.

Sculpin is really good as a session IPA because of how easy it is to drink, but sometimes I feel it's a bit too thin for my taste. Kinda get a watered down feel out of it.

beeradvocate or ratebeer are good places to start, also pic related.

As for trying beers, try and find a place where you can make custom 6-packs. This is a great way to experience a lot of different beers, and without spending a whole lot

Completely mediocre. Tasted like a Budweiser with some slight dark fruit. Got even worse as it warmed.

2/10 would not drink again

for shame

Idk, man. My first good beer was Trappistes Rochefort 10. Sure, it was different the second time I tried it, which was after years of tasting different beers, but I don't think it was a waste. It was a first taste of excellence.

I wouldn't give a pint of Amager Bryghus's Hr. Fredriksen to anyone who wasn't really into intense flavours, but a complex beer can be a reason to start sifting through what's available. I mean, imagine drinking the kind of pale lager they sell in 24-can packs and the occasional mass produced dark lager or Irish stout, and then finding something from a completely different world.

To say that an excellent beer is wasted on an immature palate sounds a tad elitistic to me.

One can easily get Bell's at grocery and party stores hereabouts, it's just nowhere to be found in bars and clubs, which is odd, they're a Michigan brewer.

I still need to drink some more Pipeworks. I've been happy with what I've tried so far. I just got back from the store with some Off Color. I've been drinking craft beer for some time and, to my shame, have never had a Gose. I plan to change that.

I also picked up some Green Flash Road Warrior and Lagunitas Hop Stoopid and Night Time since they were all nice and fresh.
