sure, of course. But... do you understand what kind of circumstance someone (not american) has to be to stoop so low as to have to eat one of THOSE meals?

People have self respect. They're not going to microwave a brown looking piece of shoe leather and a random "Sauce packet" and call that food. They'll toss it in the garbage.

Just the fact that you have eaten some of this shit confirms that Americans eat disgusting shit all the time. I live here, too. I eat a frozen pizza maybe once every 3 years. I just don't buy them. Why would I?

Anyway i know a bunch of people, and this is the way americans eat:
> they go to subway, del-taco, or any other fast food place
like once a day at least.

There are those health concious girls that bring diet apples and herring from home... but they're rare.

The majority of the people are eating fast food, al the time. That shit doesn't happen in other countries. You only go to McDonalds if you're on the way to Disneyland or something and the kids are hungry and theres no way to get food anywhere else.

It's because America is a heavily multiracial country (but not to the extent of Brazil or other Latin American places), and to just be one race is boring. For example, most Black people have no idea where they came from in Africa, so they take whatever white heritage they have (Nearly all Black Americans are part white) and flaunt that to the extreme. If they are ashamed of being part-white due to implied slave master rape, they often claim that it's "Cherokee" or some other Native American tribe.

Well, the modern generations of Americans (the kids I grew up with)... were obsessed with fads, popularity, and just general appearances. The popular kids at school were always the rich ones... and their parents would be the ones instigating the whole thing.

It's the fucking PARENTS that have a huge $3,000,000 house... and they buy the kid a brand new car... and they tell him to throw a huge party and invite the whole school. And obvious after that all the other dumbasses that are easily influence think "Wow, Tyler is so cool, did you go to his partty?"

In regular counties, we respect generous, humble, hard working, quiet people. In America they reward flash, cash, and ass.

It's the culture. So... when kids would make friends, they would ask me "Who aer you?" and i would say "Im Anon." And they would say "well, yeah we know your nam, gosh! but who ARE YOU? Craig is a vampire... his family are full of witches. Tyler is super rich... and his dad owns a dealership. And I'm Veronica... im a mut. It was because of the One Drop Ruling.

It basically said that if you had even one drop of african blood in you, you were property.

So people started to claim that they were part cherokee if they weren't fully white or whatever.

After slavery, freemen would do the same mostly because they would face the same discrimination of not being fully black or the fact that your momma let a white devil in her honey pot or whatever.

So they claimed the same thing. Cherokee.

We don't even use that sauce here, 99% of people just use mayo, mustard and ketchup.

Okay, I am german and currently living in America. Let me explain this a bit first. In germany you have "supermarkets" like Aldi and Lidl, they have limited brand names and carry mostly storebrands. They are small because they carry only 1-2 versions of an item, these minimal choices = less space needed and combined with the storebrands/other cost cutting measures (like selling items from boxes instead of individually stocking each one from a shelf or having meat/deli/fruits/veg pre-packaged at one size/price type thing instead of dedicated people behind a counter), they offer good quality at a price cheaper than the "supermarkets" closer to what you would find in America. (Note: There are apparently Aldis in the US, but I have been to one. Fun fact though, Trader Joe's is owned by one of the Aldi Brothers)

Now, another thing of Aldi and similar stores, is that each week they have a special "theme" filling the middle aisle essentially. It could be gardening tools, maybe a computer (and accessories) or so on. The items vary in quality, but tend to be good deals (My Computer I bought in one still runs wonderfully and I only changed the case because it got a bit beat up after several moves).

One type of theme week is "Country Cuisine"

So you have an "Italy Week", a "France Week" and so on. This includes British, American, Turkish, Asian, Greek and so on.

The items and quality on these vary, from stereotypical and awful to reallly realllly good (If Lidl still makes those british week salt and vinegar "sticks" get them, some of the strongest and best salt&vinegar stuff out there).

America Week is no exception to this. So you have american items with a german slant to them, like the german Süß or "sweet" popcorn (think kettlecorn with a little more sugar, less salt) to fairly spot on items (like a McRib) and then everything in between.

Coming up on next post, german versions of american food and how this street runs both ways!

Part II: American Foods in germany

So sometimes a version of american food takes off in germany and it becomes the standard. A good example is "American Chili". In germany this is often ground beef, tomatoes, kidney beans and corn. Almost all versions are identical to that and while not bad, it doesn't hold a candle to a real american chili (or the greatness of a texan meat chili).

The corn (and beans) on pizza is an extension of this mindset, with a novelty item featuring "american stuff" like corn (and beans) to show how this is REALLY AMERICAN.

Granted, Americans are no better at this, with soft pretzels (not a laugenbrezel and it never will be as good as a REAL "pretzel") to versions of german sausages (most suck) and then the one thing that makes me REALLY rage.

Black Forest Ham, in america this is cooked ham (kochschinken in germany) with a black "rind" because black forest? In germany this is like prosciutto from the Blackforest (Schwarzwald) and it is called "Schwarzwalderschinken". The american version is NOTHING like the original german (which is trademark protected in the EU, though America doesn't respect that at all and slanders this delicious foodstuff with a bad knockoff)

Don't get me wrong, the USA makes a lot of amazing stuff, like peanut butter, maple syrup and the best cheddar ever.

What other questions do you guys have?

Post more pics and give more examples plz, this is very interesting to me. Especially how you will add beans and corn to American food to make it seem more "American", even though we don't actually put corn and beans on pizza here. I'm interested because we do the same thing to other ethnic foods and end up with something entirely different than the original. For instance somebody might serve a pretzel cooked with basil and served with marinara and call it an Italian pretzel.

Go on germanbro.

Thinking back on the "Cuisine" weeks another one comes to mind with "Mexico Week" this leads me to a semi tangent, about the awfulness of "fake cheese flavor" in germany. Simply put, we can't do it. Any equivalent of "Kraft Singles" (known as Schmelzkäse, literally 'melting cheese') sucks over here, nothing like cheetos (which are good), cheese sauces/dips in the american style are awful (really bad), but I encountered the worst offender in a Mexican Week, which had these goddawful cheese flavored "Tortilla Chips", I use quotations because they were bad. Other things like Flour Tortillas had the wrong consistency and slightly pasty (not that delicious chewiness and stretch of a real good one) or Bagels (think bread formed into a bagel shape, again lacking that texture and skin of the real thing). Sadly I don't have any pics atm, never thought it was that interesting until now.

in short, germans have access to a lot of good cheese (except good US cheddar), but cannot into fake cheese of any kind.

>>5466181

Worst of all is when you have people say "This is real Blackforest Ham"

>>5466198

Not really, which is odd as you do get spicy food (like in german-chinese/thai/asian or turkish), but at this point it's like "fake chinese" food, so ingrained that some people just prefer the fake stuff over a delicious slow simmered chunks of seared beef simmered with tomatoes and paprika (bell peppers) with some imported dried chilis.

In Germany you put a "1 Euro Coin" in the cart and you get it back when you return it, this is again a cost cutting measure (no employees constantly returning carts). As for bags, in germany they are about 6-9 cents each and quality (enough to last several trips if not overloaded) and they normally sell a sturdier bag as well (for 49 cents to an euro or so). A lot of people just grab empty boxes from the shelf or bring their own bags. A fun thing with aldi is how fast they are as cashiers and how they almost never make a mistake, while in the US they don't seem to focus as much and take a longer time (though the small chat is nice). Also, in germany if you have just 1-3 items, almost everyone lets you go first in line, partially because it goes so fast, also just to be polite. I have been in supermarkets where it is late at night, they have one or two filled carts and while I have only 2 items, they don't want any delay.

Another note about German grocery stores, you can't get as amazing discounts as you can in the US (like 50% off items, BOGOF and coupons, I can get PAID to "buy" items from a store, which as a Schwab amuses me to no end.

Some side notes:

Senf (Mustard): Simply put, germans have the best and that's only counting the normal stuff. It has a balance of flavors and spice through it that just make it perfect. I can't eat american yellow mustard at all actually, though I will not say the USA doesn't have good mustard. My standby is "Deli Mustard" especially some of the fancier versions with some extra horseradish. I also supplement this with french mustard (not french's), english mustard like Colmann's (only stuff that has a kick like the germany spicy mustard, though it lacks some of the balance) and Swedish (comes closest in balance at times, but is milder and almost sweet).

Another type of mustard in germany is "Süßer senf" which you often find in Bayern (Bavaria) served with "Weißwurst" a small soft white sausage, served with the sweet mustard and brezeln (and ofc beer). Sidenote for Bayern, it is the Texas of Germany, as in, it is loud, distinctive and everyone outside treats them like THIS IS WHAT THE COUNTRY IS LIKE. Germans don't constantly wear lederhosen, just like americans aren't constantly in cowboy hats and boots and riding horses. It happens, but it is more regional and not reflective of everyone.

Spezi/Schwip-Schwap/Mezzo Mix: While America has the amazing Dr.Pepper, Root Beer (why can't we have this!) and Ginger Ale (not as good as British Ginger Beer, but it does in a pinch). Germany has "Spezi" which is like Cola+Orange Soda, but it doesn't taste like that and it's amazing, rich, refreshing and delicious. Also, all of the soda over there uses just cane sugar, unlike here where I can't drink the HFCS stuff (except Barq's, because even with awful HFCS it is like liquid crack). I don't tend to drink much soda, barring some good Diet ones (Diet Dr.Pepper and Coke Zero for example) and Cane Sugar stuff. I also drink tons of seltzer, as in germany carbonated mineral is dirt cheap, strong and delicious. Almost everyone drinks it there.

While I love Salt and Vinegar, as well as Sour Cream and Onion Chips (along with stuff like Cheetos, normal and spicy and Jalapeno kettle), there is one chip I pine for that you can't get here.

Paprika Chips, potato chips (and even pringles) with the flavor of bellpeppers. It's like having a "pure" BBQ chip without as much going on, a flavor that works with almost everything and not sweet.

If you ever have the chance to try it, I would recommend it heavily, this is the one of the best chip flavors out there and one oddly missing in america.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever visited Texas? There's a ton of towns with direct German heritage, which I grew up in. My dad didn't learn English till he went to school, they all spoke German at home, as did everyone else in town. That was in the first part of the 20th century, though. But when I was a kid, I remember every store in town, everyone spoke German to each other. There'd be a little English interspersed with it, but all the locals spoke German. But what's odd is it that the German we speak here is like an archaic form of German, one that stopped evolving in the 1800s, which is when everyone came over on the boat (landed in Galveston, and went on to found two towns, New Braunfels and Fredericksburg) When I was a kid, in the 80s, our distant cousins from Germany use to come visit (from Dusseldorf) and they always got a kick out of listening to everyone talk, because it was like listening to old German. Also, my mom always makes one knodel with 3 croutons as the lucky one.

But those first two alone is good enough. Also, northeners eat their Schnitzels with just pommes and ketchup, heathens. Spätzle is sorta like a hand formed irregular egg noodle, often panfried too, there is also a "casserole" version of Spätzle, Emmentaler (swiss cheese), Roasted Onions, Speck, Salt and Pepper layered over and over which is amazing too

>Kartoffelsalat, Zwei Weinerle, Senf

>Brezeln/Butterbrot
Laugen (lye) is what gives the pretzel it's dark hue and that distinctive rich crust, soft pretzels and little hard ones can die in a fire compared to how good this is. Also amazing served with german butter. Which brings me to Butterbrot, which is often a semi-dark german bread (like a rye one) with a nice thick (but not too much) spread of butter on it, untoasted, wrapped up with two pieces facing each other butterside (to not make a mess)

Coulda fooled 99% of the people that eat there!

I visited southern Germany once (Munich as well as Austria and Switzerland). I had a great time during my entire visit.

One funny thing is that the "german" style of sleeping where you only use a quilt and no sheet (at least in the hotels that I stayed at) was so pleasing to me that I sleep this way at home.

Also you're right about the mustard, I had some mustard in London that nearly made me shit myself because I was coughing it up so hard. It puts French's (the brand) to shame in terms of how intense it is.

Many Americans, especially in the Midwest, are of German descent but almost none are connected to their heritage. In the 40s, a lot of them probably decided assimilate into American culture and lose their German culture due to the cultural and political biases that resulted from WWI and WWII. That's probably why you don't see a lot of authentic German cuisine around America. At the beginning of the 20th century there used to be a really large German community where I currently live in Brooklyn, New York too.

As a Britfag, allow me to explain our European way of thinking.
We look at things like burgers, hotdogs and burger sauce as American, because to us this seems perfectly acceptable.
It was invented there. However, there are huge differences in how we cook things.
American pancakes are thicker, whereas ours lack the baking powder in the recipe, thus are thinner.
American cheesecake is baked in the oven, whereas our cheesecakes are set in the fridge and never really see any heat
(except to melt butter into the biscuit base)

So for most things, when we put the word 'American' on the label, we're not stereotyping American food as much as we are creating the distinction.
Don't be upset. We love your food.

You've got good taste in root beer. Why don't you like Virgil's?
If you ever get the chance, try Henry Weinhard's.

Virgil's was in the A&W camp in some ways, too creamy and sweet, not much much "bite" and I honestly prefer my root beer with more bite but not overly so (see Dad's). It is good quality, I enjoy it, but I wouldn't go out and get it.

Henry Weinhard's for me is like Thomas Kemper's and Sprecher's. They are not bad by any means, more balanced in flavor than Virgil's (Kemper's is a bit too sweet with the honey though)

Btw, what do you think about domestic Ginger Ales and Beers?

Have you had them? They are great!

Haven't really tried enough to get a taste for either.
I only know Root Beer cause I grew up loving the stuff and nowadays I occasionally feel like treating myself to a fancy brand - very occasionally.
I'm surprised there are other people as into it as me.
>Thomas Kemper's and Sprecher's
Never heard of them before, must look into it.

Yes, I've had them. I live near Ravensburg and they sell them in stores here. They are good (a bit too sweet maybe) compared to other factory made ones but far from the best without that restriction.

Have you had Hatzel's? They are handmade with premium ingredients and no conservation additives.

Well, Canada Dry is a nice inoffensive one (I prefer the diet because no HFCS). Reed's is goddawful, never ever try it, I have never had one that bad.

Thomas Kemper's is small brewed and they use honey, which changes it up,

Sprecher's has a crow on the bottle and wider than other ones IIRC, it's not amazing, but it is solid. Sort of like the Mug's of bottle/cane sugar kinds.

I do like Hatzel's, but never my favorite. I may be biased with a lot of family in Ulm and getting them fresh a lot. If I ever see them over here I will give them another try.
