You used to be able to by spaghetti in lengths of something between 2 and 3 feet. Lots of people broke it in two then.

My guess is that people are too impatient and want to throw it into the pot of water and forget about it until it is done. It's also possible that they are using far too small a pot of water.

Actually, it will. On this short spaghetti we have today, my pot I use for cooking pasta is large enough for it to be completely immersed in water when I put it in. On the longer spaghetti, when I could find it in the stores, I would help it along by pushing it to get it immersed faster.

There was never any need at all to break it in half. For that matter, if someone wanted it shorter so that they could immerse it into any decent sized pot (I think that most people use too small a pot) for making pasta, all they had to do is buy a shorter version in the store.

it also helps it cook faster or in sauce
if you steam it it goes chewy and interesting

It is quite common to break spaghetti into 3-4cm cunks and cook them directly into soups in Italy (at least the part where I grew up). It's the only way if you plan on eating it with a spoon.
