My local coffee shop/record store asks for tips for a cup of coffee. What the hay man...

Luckily tipping barely exists in Australia, so I don't know that feel. By that I mean people don't expect tips and treat you like shit when they don't get one.

Hate to post in a tipping thread, but here goes:
I only really ever drink black coffee because that is what I prefer. I don't tip, but about once a week I'll ask them to make me something special so I can leave them a tip. I like my coffee shop and I feel like not being an asshole is a useful skill. I don't think anyone would begrudge you for not tipping just for youring you a cup of regular coffee though.

I'm glad i haven't been to pic related. It sounds like the next Quiznos and that's not a good thing.

I never tip for coffee, mostly because even the "fancy" stuff is just pouring in some flavored syrup and making a latte or whatever. Hell, if I ask for cream/sugar they just tell me to add that shit myself at a disorganized counter with gross jugs of skim that don't even pour correctly.

Then again I'm not a huge lover of coffee anyway so I usually just make a cup at home or go without.

I went to jersey mikes a few weeks ago for the first time, accidentally got the large sammich not knowing it was the size of my arm. Shit was damn good and I somehow finished the whole damn thing, nobody asked me for a tip and they were all very enthusiastic about making me a damn sammich. I would never tip someone for doing a straight job like that but I'm not hating on them if they were to ask, some idiots are easily guilted into giving them free money so more power to them. I don't understand why you people get so buttflustered over tipping, it's not against the law not to tip, I think you guys just get mad because you are either guilted into giving money to people who don't deserve it and you feel like a bitch or you don't tip and you're mad that you feel like a cheap ass. I literally get people begging for money on the street everywhere I go and they don't even provide a service, if anything be mad at hobos and bums, they want tips for just being in your presence, at least a sammich maker did something for you.

I saw Jersey Mike's at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Would you like to add a tip?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw JM trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

why do people not tip? it doesn't really make sense. it's not like it's "extra," it's just a system that allows for direct consumer response. it's basically the most egalitarian "free market" system that we have at the moment but it's funny how pretty much all the ideological anti-tippers identify as right wing/libertarian. would you prefer that your food simply costs 20% more, without any input from you whatsoever? because that is the system many countries have. obviously someone working the line isn't taking your order, filling your water, running your food etc. like a waiter does but I think 10% isn't unreasonable.

the only grey area that I can think of is baristas really. i never know what the fuck to do when I come up against that.

I'll tip waiters at a nice restaurant, but I refuse to tip delivery drivers or baristas. Baristas because I don't see the point - they're doing their job and generally they're getting paid above minimum wage. Delivery drivers because I worked at a couple of delivery joints while I was in undergrad, and it is the easiest fucking job in the world. Nothing about driving around, smoking pot/cigs and listening to music and then halfheartedly handing someone a pizza deserves a tip.
