i have had the 2009 a couple times and i think it is world class. in a blind taste testing among 8 people (several who weren't as snobby about beer), dark lord came second only to angel's share (which has won three times in a row that i've held tastings with different groups)

Not god tier, but I think this is a good barley wine in Japan. I don't know if there are any god tier beers out here yet, but Shiga Kogen's House IPA, Hitachino Nest Espresso Stout, Minoh Pale Ale / W-IPA are all good regulars. I had a Szechuan Spiced Pale Ale (from Minoh) a few months ago that I thought was great for session drinking.
