How's your privileged life?

>> No.5367830

That's okay, though, since the only sector of our economy that is growing is food service.

>> No.5367850

Not OP but actually preparing and knowing how to prepare food isn't exactly something I would call "privileged".

This is something I don't understand, how can someone not have enough time to prepare a 14minute meal? The only people I can think of is Americans in Detroit that have to catch those buses at 3a.m. to go to their jobs, in which case I think that's an exception.

>> No.5367902

>>5367881
You know how people say "I don't have time for video games anymore" when logistically that's obviously bullshit? It's not that they don't literally have the time it's that they're so tired from working and raising a household that it's just easier to make those quick meals.

How many variations of rice and beans are their? I hope your not using basmati rice.

>> No.5367967

>>5367960
Well, uhhh.

>beans with diced pork tenderloin
>beans with diced skirt steak
>beans with bacon
>beans with various sorts of sausage
>plain beans

Then mix those with Mexican style rice.

Usually fairly liberal with the cayenne and black pepper.

Just curious, but what's wrong with basmati rice?

I never realized this before I started coming to 4chan.

Ah with mean as well, I thought you meant like rice + navy beans, rice + green beans, etc.

>> No.5367991

Most of the time it's pinto beans, will do black beans every now and then.

I really, really like basmati rice. Been going to the same Indian grocery store and getting 10lb sacks for quite a few years now.

Apparently it's difficult for people to understand how I can eat rice and beans so much. I've got them to the point where they're perfect in the spice department, so they're never dull.

I'm also Mexican and grew up having rice and beans as an entire meal, so I don't really see them as a side dish.

>>5367977
Right... which makes it a variation.

To confirm, I'm throwing that meat in with the beans.

Sometimes I'll make arroz con pollo. Pan fry some diced chicken breasts and thinly sliced potatoes - again liberal use of spices - then mix beans in for the most ultimately satisfying meal.

>>5367981
It's never been difficult for me. If anything it's particular about the amount of water/liquid and cooking time before it jumps from being cooked to being soggy and sticky.

I do from time to time.

For 'special' occasions I'll make a brisket and go the whole nine yards on the spread: dank as hell mashed potatoes, corn pan fried in butter salt and pepper, corn bread and of course beans.

I make a mean corned beef hash. It turns out better when I have leftover brisket, but if I'm just working with corned beef it's still great. With some cheddar cheese and Whataburger spicy ketchup mixed in it's orgasmic.

Rice and beans is purely my dietary staple. I cannot get tired of them and it's a reasonably healthy meal.

>> No.5368053

It's food though, not fucking video games. It's one of the most important things in your lives.

Immigrant families who have a tradition of cooking and know how almost always find a way to cook even though they work 2-3 jobs.

The only people who aren't cooking are doing so because they are fucking stupid, not because they are under privileged. The only exception is if you live in the deep, deep inner city where there are no grocery stores and only bodegas and gas stations.

Then know you've fucked up making food that illiterate Mexican laborers are capable of making in their sleep.

One of the first times I made beans I accidentally added way too much black pepper because I have a metric fuckton of it from work because it was too finely ground.

They came out awesomely spicy.

>soak for 6-8 hours
>rinse, put in pot with lid
>add enough water to cover them and then some
>add salt, pepper and things that taste good
>let them simmer, covered for 2-2.5 hours
>check them every 30 minutes or so to make sure they have enough water

They're so easy to make and you can make a fuckton of them, throw them in the fridge and they last a hella long time.

I know an a reasonably affluent Middle-American family that lives entirely on frozen prepared meals, salad from bags and bottled dressing. I visited them for dinner one night and was served frozen pizza and salad from a bag. I asked if they has any vinegar and oil so I could make a vinaigrette (because I hooped to avoid ranch dressing). The wife produced some white vinegar that she said she used for cleaning. I made a rudimentary vinaigrette with it as she looked on. Her comment? "Wow, I didn't know you could do that!"

my housemate is remarkably shit at cooking considering he's in his mid twenties. he got tubby recently so he started trying to cook for himself but most of the time he takes fresh ingredients and turns them into something that is probably nutritionally worse than a blowout at maccas.

the worst is the stir fries. he does it completely ass backwards. takes a cold pan, pours like a cup of vegetable oil into it, puts diced stewing beef in and lets it slowly heat up until it starts to sizzle after like 20 minutes. then he puts one of those packs of stir fry veg in along with one of those sachets of sweet chilli sauce, leaves it for another ten minutes and throws the noodles in. you can imagine how it comes out. usually does it while he's downloading all kinds of malware to our media centre PC looking for emulator roms or whatever.

doesn't drain tuna before he mixes it with mayo. tries to make banoffee pie repeatedly, each attempt suffering from its own unique catastrophic flaw - either it's sweeter than sugar itself, or he churns the cream into butter, or he uses evaporated milk instead of condensed milk and forgets to boil it. one time i caught him trying to make the dulce de leche with a can of sweetcorn. i should have let him do it, his face would've been priceless.

and the washing up afterwards is diabolical, there's always enough ketchup oozing down plates into the drying rack to lubricate several servings of chips. which sucks because he has a tendency to passive aggressively do a massive clean up every once in a while as a way of securing leverage for future domestic favours.

i love him though. he makes 55k but his domestic life is a farce.

Only if you're a post-spiritual-hippie-soulsearching-gaiachild who only buys "organic" from ultra expensive niche supermarkets.

If you stick to your local ingredients (inb4 buying tropical fruits in cold european countries) it will be MUCH cheaper, unless you eat from dollar menu at fast food joints every single day.

Cokking your own food is not only cheaper, but also healthier and much tastier if you know your spices and herbs.

I mean it when I say, do not ever spoil your kids when it comes to food. My brother is full-on chubbynerd mode, claims he's /fit/ and just big-boned (despite having a blubber gut) and REFUSES to make anything above microwaving a hotpocket for himself.

When I get bored of the cook's food, I wait until she's asleep (she's like Consuelo from family guy, she hates when I mess with "her" work stuff) and I cook full meals with multiple sides. The sole reason I learned how to cook was because I was fucking TERRIFIED of becoming a junkdumpster like my brother.

My roommates are always amazed at how little I spend on food every month. I buy grains, meats and vegetables in bulk and just make whatever comes to mind off the ingredients every day. My meals come out to maybe 4 dollars per, and that beats the hell out of the taco bell one of the plebs I live with buys.

I don't understand how people can't cook, though I helped my mother in the kitchen from the moment I could peel a potato and grew up poor as shit, so maybe that helped me.

Its just always interesting to see how other people are living. When I visit my parents I'll just fucking stare in amazement. Crazy thing is that fridge is only a fraction of the food in the house. In their garage is a double wide fridge, a double wide freezer and a freezer the size of a regular fridge.

Its no wonder that I lost 30 lbs after moving out.
