I'm gonna be in LA in a few weeks. If I go to Pinks will I actually be able to eat a hot dog or is it endless lines forever?

It's a hot dog (or similar sausage, depending on your order) in a bun. Not bad, but not particularly special.

Why do people line up there? Because in LA people will line up to get into any place where celebrities are likely to be seen. And any place that has been in business for more than 40 years is "iconic". Fair enough. Celebrities ARE royalty there, and the city's roots don't go very far back.

Just realize if you choose to stand in line for a hot dog at Pink's you're not standing in line for an amazing hot dog; you're standing in line to participate in an LA thing. That's fine, as long as you don't get yourself over-hyped about the hot dogs themselves.

If you want to stand in a line to participate in an LA thing where the end end result is also something amazing go have coffee at Intelligensia in Silver Lake.

Pink's is not worth it at all. Canter's would be the place to go for an LA institution, but know there are better delis if quality and cost are your main criteria. Langer's and Label's are better quality IMO and at least Langer's is a notable LA joint.

Go for hole in the wall Mexican taco spots, and Guelaguetza is amaaaazing mole and Oaxacan style Mexican. Also eat seafood.

>> No.5345477

Also, no one is going to pretend the steaks at Musso and Frank's are the best you'll ever have, but it is by far the restaurant with the most iconic Hollywood-institution feel. >Also, no one is going to pretend the steaks at Musso and Frank's are the best you'll ever have, but it is by far the restaurant with the most iconic Hollywood-institution feel.
This is true of most iconic LA places. What makes them iconic is who ate/eats there, and the fact they're still in business. They represent the physical manifestation of the idealized Hollywood dream of seeing, touching and tasting. Many of these places take pride in being a part of this. Musso and Frank's is proud of what they are, and the guys working there are lifers. But none of these places got famous for culinary brilliance. They got famous for being good joints that became celebrity hangouts.

If you're a film buff these iconic joints are worth hitting. If you're more of a food buff they're probably better avoided, along with most of the fine dining scene in LA (though I know many will disagree with this). My experience has been the best food in LA tends to be either fast food (since they pretty much invented modern American fast food there) and immigrant food (because the immigrant communities are so vibrant). I'd go for Mexican, Greek, Lebanese, Thai, Korean or even Armenian joints over most of the iconic joints if I wanted a memorable meal.

DO NOT GO TO THE FAMOUS PINK'S STAND. It's a tourist trap.

http://www.pinkshollywood.com/locations.html

I'd go take a detour to San Diego, because that is just an awesome beautiful city (unlike LA). Or stop off in Vegas and get a Pink's hot dog at one of the casinos.

I disagree with people in this threads, Pinks are tasty hot dogs, but there's no reason to wait longer than 10 minutes for one.

Honestly LA is a fucking shithole and I say that as a native. LA County is awesome but the city itself is dirty and the traffic is a fucking nightmare. You can walk down one street in Los Angeles and it's beautiful and then the next turn you're in some area where you might be mugged.

I felt similarly until I moved out of state for 7 years. I was very glad to come back home. LA has a ton to offer if you're willing to go after it. If you're lazy and expect it to come to you...that's not going to happen.

I lived in a "bad neighborhood" for the last 3 years, and never once was in a dangerous situation.

On the Pink's tip, I grew up about 4 blocks away. It's alright. There are times when it's not slammed and the line is short, but they are not normal "hot dog hours". Unless you really feel like you HAVE to experience it, you won't be missing anything by skipping it.

Because shitty shithole next to Mississippi has amazing food, but no money. No one gives a fuck about your flooded neighborhoods, your deep culture or your state's abbreviation.

Serious music and food fans might give Louisiana some lip service, but even for them it's a kind of Disney World of Alcoholism, but without any security. It's a dangerous place to visit, and there's no economic incentive to go there. It's fast becoming an adventure tourism location for people who like to drink and eat too much.

Los Angeles has always been a place to work for the entertainment industry. It's had its moments of being a shithole, too. But it's held up as a viable place to do business. People still make fortunes there.

NOLA is over, I'm sad to say. Liked that town before Katrina, and I liked it after. But I'm not rushing back. Nothing there for me.

If I get a call and a ticket for a job in LA I'm pretty much there, as long as the terms are good. End up there a month or so out of every year, and I live in New York. LA is a great second best, with better weather.

Louisiana is a great piece of American history, but it's a has been.

California is a "may-issue" state for permits to carry concealed guns. The willingness of issuing authorities in California ranges from No-Issue in most urban areas to Shall-Issue in rural counties. Additionally, the issuing authority can also impose restrictions on the CCW permit-holder, such as limiting concealed carry only to the purposes listed on the approved CCW permit application.

Handguns sold by dealers must be "California legal" by being listed on the state's roster of handguns certified for sale. Private sales of firearms must be done through a licensed dealer. All firearm sales are recorded by the state, and have a ten-day waiting period

Semi-automatic firearms that the state has classified as assault weapons, .50 BMG caliber rifles, and magazines that can hold more than ten rounds of ammunition may not be sold in California.

A Handgun Safety Certificate, obtained by passing a written test, is required for handgun purchases

if you want hotdogs fuck pinks and go to The Infield Hot Dog Stand, Slaw Dogs, or Fab Hot Dogs. They all make amazing dogs and have a much shorter wait time. If you want a good burger go to Oinkster. Its not in LA proper but the royal is well worth the drive.

Cali is so damned far in debt though. The fact that their GDP is pretty much that of France is pretty irrelevant when you think about how much welfare they burn through, how much they spend on unfeasible laws, and how much the federal government has to intervene on their gang-crime and drug-trade.
