One of my jobsites is in midtown east. These are my usual lunch spots. If you stop over there here's my picks.

Rocky's Number II. Best Pizza I've had.
2nd ave between 33rd and 34th.

There's also plenty of places where you can get 2 slices and a soda for 2.75.

Raffiq's Halal Kart. 33rd and Park.

Bareburger. Awesome burgers.
3rd Ave between 34 and 35th.

Keep in mind, I lived in Rego Park and Forest Hills for a while.

My fav for Indian food is Tandoor in Rego Park, though you can find lots of great ones all over Jackson Heights. Baluchi's in Forest Hills is great too.

My fav Queens pizza is Rosa's Pizza in Maspeth.

Some places in Queens you can find these Mexican food places that look like Chinese takeout, and it's run by a bunch of Chinese people too. Those are all similar and good. Usually called Fresh Tortillas or something like that. I see them mostly in Rego Park and Forest Hills.

For authentic Mexican, Nixtamal in Corona is the place.

Bareburger (mentioned above) also has a location in Forest Hills.

There's an awesome French bakery in Forest Hills called LA Boulangerie.

Flushing has lots of Korean places and I haven't tried enough to declare a favorite, but I love Rolli Kimbab.

Leo's Latticini and Mama's in Corona has amazing Italian sandwiches and desserts. Get the Mama's special, like right now.

I've heard great things about Pio Pio, a Peruvian place in Middle Village.

So many more. It's a shame Queens is so humongous compared to Manhattan.

If the Flushing Mall is still open, you have to eat there. It's like destination number one for all Flushing residents.

Go into the food court and you should see a stall right in front of you with some guy in an Asian chef hat cooking over a griddle. Order the pepper steak.

Granted I might be wrong about where the stall is now, it's been a decade since I lived in NYC.

Next, while you're in Flushing, go to 41st Avenue and Main Street, and Red Bowl Noodle Shop will be at the corner. It has noodle bowl statue at the top. I recommend the pho, best I've ever had.

Seconding this. There are actually a handful of dumpling houses, Vanessa's, Tasty Dumpling, Propsperity, etc, that all serve 4-5 dumpling for $1. However, I'm pretty sure none has the sesame pancake that Vanessa's has. IMO go to vanessas for a giant, sub $3 sesame pancake with duck and hoisin, then go to tasty dumpling for a couple order of dumplings. Also, being in the LES, there's TONS of great food around there, especially if you're willing to walk/taxi in a 1-2 mile radius. A few of my other favorites in that area are tasty hand pulled noodles, Xi'An famous foods, and big wing wong. However, Flushing should really be your destination if you want Chinese food.

As far as momofuku... it's good, but, yes, very overhyped. Because of that, also slightly overpriced. But, you could do much worse than them. The Ippudos, Hide-Chan's etc are all WAY superior and probably cheaper as far as ramen goes. Hide-Chan's Black Garlic Oil(Mayu) ramen is fucking killer, although, all of those ramen shops can get busy so be prepared to wait a few minutes.

If you like cured meats and salamis, please pay a visit to Salumeria Bielesse. One of my favorite moves is to go there, get some cured sausage, go to Murray's Cheese for some cheese, and hit up Sullivan Street Bakery for some of their sesame bread. Then, go to any park or maybe even the high line for some people watching. Maybe some wine in a coke bottle and you've got yourself a kickass lunch and awesome day.

As for falafel, Mamoun's is great when you're drunk/coming out of the comedy cellar, and it's awesome because it's dirt cheap, but Taim is one of the best falafels I've ever had. Highly recommend it over Mamoun.

Queens is the best borough to eat in, but getting around there is a gigantic pain in the ass. Not worth it for a tourist. Even most locals barely explore it. Brooklyn has amazing food, too, but again, if you're a tourist you're in Manhattan, and that's what you came to see.

Here's a list of killer cheap Manhattan eats, because you probably have your list of indulgent places already worked out:

Punjabi, 114 E1st St. Delicious vegetarian curries, $3.50 for a bowl, $5.50 for a plate. Samosas are excellent for $1.50 a pop. Seriously good, ungodly cheap.

Xi'an Famous Foods, 81 St Mark's Place - Crazy ass western Chinese food loaded with hot pepper and cumin. Lamb burger and spicy noodles are winners.

Mamoun's Felafel, 119 MacDougal St OR 22 St Mark's Place. Classic taste of NYC of decades past. Get the felafel sandwich with the blistering hot sauce. An amazing mix of pain and pleasure for under $5.

Vanessa's Dumpling House, 118 Eldridge St. Get two orders of the pork fried dumplings. You'll spend $2. You won't regret it. Unless the place is crazy crowded, in which case walk two blocks south to Prosperity Dumpling, 46 Eldridge St.

Brooklyn Taco, 120 Essex St - Inside the Essex Street Market (worth seeing for a few minutes) you'll find this taco stall, where you will slightly overpay for tacos much better than NYC has any business serving.

Those are the good cheapies that leap to mind in the East Village/LES area. I can offer mid priced joints that are worth a trip if you're interested.

What will really happen is op will try to be hard core and ask for the Chinese menu, get uncomfortable when it says "M.P." instead of a price, ask the price, realize that he's not used to spending $35 on a plate of steamed fish prepared tableside at a Chinese joint, nor is he mentally prepared to eat the less expensive sauteed frogs legs plate for $15, and ends up ordering the $9 general tso's lunch special from the white people menu, that tastes exactly like the general tso's he gets back home.

He'll then post on /ck/ about this epic chinese place that he can't remember the name of (they arr rook same) and make vague pronouncements about how the Chinese food in Flushing is so much better than the Chinese food in Manhattan.

For some reason she and I each got a dish and they were fucking huge. She got some kind of a fried noodle chicken thing that was pretty good. Some of the noodles were almost crispy.

Mine was some kind of mixed seafood thing. I could identify scallops, shrimp, clams, and calamari but then there were quite a few other seafood things I couldn't identify. Gooped on top of it was a very thick gray sauce that tasted like salted glue.

All I'm saying is if op wants white people friendly Chinese, there's a lot of really good stuff in the city that doesn't involve a 2 hour round trip and being uncomfortable. Yes, Flushing has great restaurants, but anyone claiming that Manhattan doesn't is just being a hipster.

Manhattan has great restaurants, but to get something comparable to what you'll find in Flushings you'll spend 2-3x as much.

Durian is definitely all frozen as its shipped over - it won't be that great as I noted, however you can't find it that more than a handful of metro areas in the U.S. so why not?

If Op is looking for some great Manhattan restaurants and is willing to shell out the cash Marea, Al Fiori, and Scalini Fedeli are all top notch - expect to about ~$150-200pp and absolutely do the prix fixe.

>so why not

He might actually get a chance to try the real thing, it would be a shame to develop an aversion to it.

Also there is a huge middle ground between $200pp meals and the $9 general tso's lunch special. Cafe China is good "upscale" chinese food in a white people friendly environment. Probably around $40 pp with drinks. La Vie en Szechuan is good too, although it's not so great with the drinks (maybe tsingtao or some mediocre wine at best).

There's a lot more to Chinese food in the city than Mott between Canal and Bayard.

Lol? Thats a bit of a stretch, we're talking about fruit that is only available fresh for a limited season in a limited number of Asian countries. To try the real thing we need to assume OP is going to visit said countries in said season; now your statement requires the further assumption that he is one of the small minority who would actually enjoy durian.

The point is for $10 he should just buy one and have the experience well he can.

I disagree. Sure class plays into things when people start talking food, but that makes sense. Not everyone gets to compare the tasting menus at Per Se from season to season, the same way not everyone is comfortable walking into a four for $1 dumpling house, let alone comparing notes on such places. There is only so much overlap between those who shop at the greenmarkets and those who know which Dominican joints make the best mondongo on Sunday.

The New York food "scene" is many different worlds existing on top of each other, with only so much overlap. Getting a handle on everything going on just in your own neighborhood is practically a part time job.

The fine dining world is covered by professionals. Knowing what else is good becomes a matter of pride to the rest of us who are into food. We all have our favorites, some of us even trash talking about them as if they were sports teams. So what?

Great suggestions guys. LIfag here who craves great food and loves going to the city to eat.
I will be sure to check at least some of these places come summertime.

Since we're expanding past Manhattan, I'll suggest Smorgasburg flea markets in Brooklyn (only during the weekends). There are a handful of locations, but the one I'm familiar with near the Williamsburg bridge is apparently moving somewhere new. They have a bunch of vendors selling a variety of unique foods from different cultures, often mixed with another culture.

>Any recommendations for something that i probably wont find on european market?

Like trashy stuff? Here:

Economy Candy (108 Rivington) has all kinds of retro and oddball sweets you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else.

Dominique Ansel Bakery (189 Spring St) just reopened after being cleared by the department of health, so if you want to go home with a story of waiting in line for a cronut that's an option.

I happen to think Artichoke Bastille Pizza (328 E14th St) is terrible, but it sure as hell is unlike anything you're likely to find in Europe.

If you want to try some uniquely bad Americanized sushi walk into any cheap sushi joint and order a Philadelphia roll. If that's too terrifying you can go for the equally bad but less scary California roll.

99 Miles to Philly (94 3rd Ave) will sell you a passable version of a Philly cheesesteak, which is probably not found in Europe.

Right next door is Blue 9 Burger (92 3rd Ave), which is NYC's closest thing to In-N-Out burger. (It's basically an In-N-Out clone). You could get some idea of what the fuss is about by getting a double double here.

Pommes Frites (123 2nd Ave) is a NYC copy of a Belgian fries joint. But they also make a reasonably accurate version of poutine (the classic Quebec gut bomb of fries, cheese curds and gravy). You've seen pictures of it on this board, I'm sure. You could scratch it off your list of things to try.

I don't know how available char shiu bao are in Europe, but it might be worth stopping into a Chinese bakery (found in Chinatown, also many blocks north and east of it) for a pork bun. Make sure it's the baked version that looks like a European bun. Should be under $2. A slightly sweet bun with a roast pork center is a fine thing.

Exactly, I agree. Very rarely you will stumble upon one which strays from the 8 page menu and learns to concentrate on quality and good ingredients (ie Stage restaurant, Joe Jnr, Family Corner Diner) but for the most part you're going to get a hodge podge of poorly prepared fusion of Greek, American and Italian rubbish not worth going out for. Which is why I called that guy out on going to a diner in NYC.

And that Daily News best diner in NYC banner can be found all over the city at diners equally as average and forgettable. It obviously works for tourists like our dear friend here however

Pick one. At an average NY diner, you basically get a big plate of brown and white slop for about $15. You can get about thrice that much food, with about the same nutritional value, and better taste, at the most random yelp one star Chinatown dump. Sure it's cheaper than some options in the city, but that's a meaningless statement here. I don't even know what you're trying to say.

Knowing what food options are available in the city is not a "hipster" thing. Most people here eat out a lot. That's how we know what's good and what isn't.

If you had to go to a diner I generally go for an omelette, as they're usually pretty large and don't sent the wallet.

If you're in NYC for any amount of time you don't want to be wasting time in a diner no matter what borough or neighbourhood you're in. Convincing yourself it's anything other than 'meh' and it's better than what you could find nearby is deluding yourself.

I'm well above the current median income for my neighborhood, so yeah. But I've been a poorfag in Brooklyn twice before in my life, so to me it feels more like coming home after you've made good. I'll admit I do kind of stand out as the token aging hipster among my mostly Latino and Chinese neighbors.

Upper East Side? Traditionally the home of big money, small morals. Young Wall St types, rich expat Europeans, people who drive expensive cars even though they live in the city, and don't really need one.

Not much going on up there. Rich folks like it dull. Also a pain in the ass to get to, because no subway goes there.

Damn right. Fucking love it, too. The angsty white folks have yet to arrive, the food is cheap and good and I'm paying one third of what I did when I lived in Manhattan. Oh, and two express subways can get me back to Manhattan in just over 15 min. Not much in the way of nightlife here, but I'm an oldfag, so I don't care.

The coffee scene in NY has radically transformed in the past 5 years, it used to be that places like Porto Rico were the only game in town besides the usual pedestrian stuff (Sbux, street cart coffee, diner coffee). Now almost every neighborhood has coffee that isn't completely embarrassing.

>>5357222

The other guy is right though, that's why the UES east of 2nd ave is full of first year analysts making 5-figure salaries. The social status requirements for someone like that dictate living in a neighborhood with a "good name" and that's one of the few "good name" places they can afford because no one else wants to live there because transport is absolutely horrible. The rich people live closer to the park. The 2nd avenue subway is decades overdue.

Not so much. The neighborhood joints tend to either be old man bars or sketchy Latino joints, neither of which are my scene. I didn't move here for the nightlife. I moved here because I wanted a cheap place to live with a vibrant food scene that was a quick trip to Manhattan.

>i'm in south slope btw
So you hit Toby's for pizza? That place is better than it has any right to be, in spite of reeking of fucking truffle oil. Whoever decided to put a proper wood pizza oven in a fake English pub/sports bar clearly had a genius moment.

Ever hit Rossman's on 3rd? It's not amazing, but there are some good deals there.

>assuming you take the 59th N?
36th D or N. I live right by the park (which is fucking great). So El Bronco and Matamoros are a stone's throw away. As is Ba Xuyen. And Yun Nan Flavor Garden just a little further.

I'm able to do most of my grocery shopping at little Chinese and Mexican greengrocers. Those places are really cheap, and the turnover is so high that the stuff is all pretty fresh.

Their hummus is amazing. They have good Tunisian olive oil for $8 a liter. And some deals on fruit and veg.

Also, the Turkish joint, Kofte Piyaz on 5th Ave may not be amazing, but the food is way better than it ought to be for what they guy charges you. (Get the red lentil soup).

And if you want to get a complete meal for under $5 hit Mei Hao on 8th. The food is very simple and basic, but tasty and ungodly cheap, in a place that's pretty much a Fujian cafeteria. Think the opposite of the kind of place you'd bring a date, and this is it.

I live in the Financial District. You should go to Stone Street, lots of places. Adrienne's has fantastic pizza. Smorgas Chef has decent Swedish food, meatballs, etc. Harry's Cafe is a little more upscale but great food. Go to Shorty's on Pearl Street for a bad ass Philly style cheese steak. Fraunces Tavern next door has great food, whiskey/beer list, and history (its where George Washington said his farewell to his troops after the Revolutionary War). Great steakhouses include Delmonicos, MarkJoseph, and Bobby Van's, again more upscale/expensive. Cowgirl Seahorse is a fun dive type bar with great bar food and the like, try the oyster po boy. Suteishi has some excellent sushi and the service is great. Across the street is Nelson Blue, New Zealand bar. New menu is good, order the lamb meatballs if they have them. Get a drink at Paris Cafe, food is good as well, typical Irish pub type fare. Trading Post is a newer bar/restaurant, menu has been hit or miss, but when its good its really good. Try the spicy shrimp flat bread. Harry's Italian is excellent pizza and good to very good pasta/mains. Upscale Italian can be found at Giardino D'oro or Fino, always reliable. Less upscale but still good Italian at Acqua or Il Brigante, but my pick for Italian in the neighborhood is Barbalu (formerly Barberini Alimentari pre Sandy). Les Halles does a great steak frites, even if you won't see Bourdain. There are more, let me know if you are looking for something in particular and maybe i can point it out down here. I've lived downtown for almost seven years now.

Yakitori Taisho on St Mark's is fun, has beer and a variety of things beyond yakitori

Cocoron gets rave reviews for noodles. There's one in Little Italy and one on the LES. I have not eaten at either, but friends I trust have said very positive things. It's on my list to hit soon.

Yuji Ramen - The location (in the food court at Whole Foods on Houston St) does not inspire confidence, but Cocoron I've heard good reviews about it from trusted sources.

Ni Japanese Market - Hidden in the back of the Essex ST Market, 120 Essex, this place serves up slightly expensive Japanese health food in bento boxes. Not worth going out of your way for under normal circumstances, but if you've been overdosing on too much heavy food their light, healthy fare would hit the spot.

For the best pizza, you need to go to Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Any pizzeria there will do. There or maybe some places in the Italian parts of the Bronx are good too, but idk, I don't go to the Bronx. Almost any pizza places in Manhattan that aren't $1 pizza will call themselves "gourmet" and be overpriced as fuck and not worth the $$$. I know some chick who moved to the city and ordered some pizzas for a housewarming party. For 4 pizzas, she ended up spending ~$120 and they turned out to be soggy and undercooked. 2bros $1 pizza isn't half bad for street grub, but really amazing, authentic Italian pizzas can only be gotten in Italian neighborhoods such as Bensonhurst and they won't break the bank either.

I lived in b'hurst for a couple of years in the late 90s. While the standard for neighborhood pizza is pretty good out there, your opinion was invalidated the second you mentioned two bros. My friend's 2 bedroom apartment is $900 a month in Brooklyn. Everything in it is brand new, from the walls to the toilets (owners remodeled the entire building shortly before renting). It's a safe, white neighborhood too. Market value for the place is easily well over $1500/mo. The better connected you are in the city, the more sweet deals you come across. People who move to NY from elsewhere are able to survive in the city (bumming on couches, I guess), but natives and long-time residents are able to thrive.
