When making a White Russian, what specifically should you use? I'd like to make some.

>Best type of vodka to use?
>Do you need Kahlua or just any type of coffee liqueur?
>Is a specific type of milk like whole milk vs. fat free better?

Also I know the ratio is 5 parts vodka to 2 parts coffee stuff, but what exactly should the parts be? 5 shots vodka and 2 shots coffee? 2.5 shots vodka and 1 shot coffee?

Kahlua is already the best coffee liqueur and it's already fairly cheap

>but what exactly should the parts be? 5 shots vodka and 2 shots coffee? 2.5 shots vodka and 1 shot coffee?
does it matter as long as you want to keep that ratio? how ever much you want to drink/fits in the glass you are using

ice, cake vodka, kahlua, chocolate milk, heavy cream

half glass ice, jigger vodka, two jigger kahlua, rest choco milk, dash cream, blown with a straw in the bottom so the heavy stuff mixes up better

Bailey's also works well as substitute for Cream, but for some reason it doesn't mix well with really cheap or 80 proof vodka (not sure why but it doesn't mix well and sort of coagulates). One thing I know that does work well is 2 parts 100 proof Stoli to 2 parts Kahlua to 1 part Baileys.

* If I'm drinking a lot I use 2% milk instead of half&half since it's not as heavy.

* Kahlua French Vanilla is good

* Three Olives Cherry Vodka is good

* I usually do equal parts vodka/kahlua

* As a sub for Kahlua I've only ever tried Kamora. It wasn't as good. I hear Starbucks is decent, but it's the same price or a couple bucks more than Kahlua so I stick with Kahlua. I do like to buy it on sale though ... don't really like paying $19 for it ... usually try to get it on sale for $16.

White and black russians are supposed to be pretty strong fucking drinks. It's 2 parts vodka, 1 part kahlua, 1 part cream or whole milk for a white, and 2 parts vodka 1 part kahlua for a black. Brand of vodka really doesn't matter, the kahlua overwhelms it pretty easily.

>> No.5202589

>>5202535
>kahlua
It's essentailyl mixed at "highball ratios", which is to say about 1:1 spirit to mixers, which is to say it is in no way considered to be a drink that is "strong" by anyone who knows anything about cocktails. For example, Embury's "magic ratio" of 8:2:1 (spirit:modifier:sweetner), would be equivalent to a 2.67:1 ratio, and that would be his average (ex: his martini is 7:1, and his Old Fashioned would clock in at about 12:1).

tldr: They're not very strong at all, Shirley Temple.

Of course not. I think it's a bit of a shame that the amount of vermouth fashionable in Martinis has decreased steadily ever since the cocktail was invented

Says the man who actually takes vodka cocktails seriously, and worse yet, drowns them in milk and sugar-syruped liquer. Just have a fucking milkshake instead, it's clearly what' you're looking for anyway.

Embury wrote (arguably) the most well-respected book in the industry.

depends on your tastes. i generally use stoli, but i just prefer a non-flavored vodka. however, others have suggested vanillia or whipped cream vodkas, and those might not be too bad.

imo, kahlua is pretty sweet as coffee liqueurs go - try something else if you want a more coffee-like flavor. the patron shit if you feel fancy, whatever offbrand shit if you're on a budget.

i think the dairy you chose will have a much larger impact on the flavor than some people realize. if you use fat free milk, you're essentially just adding white colored water, so that will preserve the flavor. on the other end, if you use heavy whipping cream, it will really smooth things out and make for a full creamy mouth feel - its almost like drinking something from starbucks at this point.

i've had bars actually make me a WR with baileys irish cream. don't do this. doesn't taste right at all.

luckily for you, WRs are one of the cheapest "official" cocktails you can make! you can always pour in enough shit to hide the flavor of heaven swill tier vodka, off-brand kahluas aren't that bad, and you probably already have milk in your fridge. start off with a 1:1 ratio of vodka:coffee liqueur, and then add enough dairy until it looks and tastes like something you like.

and as always, abide.

The way I figure it, any drink that tries to hide the fact there's any alcohol in it at all is 'girly'.

So, both a white russian and a Long Island iced tea are girly.

Everybody does, because it sounds cool.

...and gin is higher quality now, so it doesn't *require* vermouth to be palatable.

With some gin (Sapphire, say) you may as well not add vermouth because it may actually make it worse.

...but a nice fresh vermouth compliments many gins very very nicely. Vermouth is underrated.

>Best type of vodka to use?

Just get anything over 20 dollars and then use a Brita to filter it so its smooth.

>Do you need Kahlua or just any type of coffee liqueur?

Any liqueur will do really. Kahlua is just used because it's widely available compared to the more expensive French chocolate Liqueurs

>Is a specific type of milk like whole milk vs. fat free better?

Whole milk is creamier, fat free is more watery.
