Anyone else find beer to be disgusting? It's usually not bad for the first few sips with steak, but when you actually have to drink a whole glass it's basically just slightly bitter and sour carbonated water. Some are just so fucking bitter that I can't bring myself to have a second sip, like Pilsner Urquell.

I've been trying to find a nice beer/ale to enjoy.

I first tried lagers, but the only ones I really like are german wheat beers. Every other lager just tasted shitty, so now I've moved on to ales. Only one that sticks out in my mind is Theakston XB which I really liked. Any other ales you guys can suggest which aren't too hard to find (i.e. supermarket or other national UK alcohol store)?

i personally don't think New Amsterdam is that bad. it's pretty good for its price and mixes well (though i'd go for Gordon's in the $10-15 range). the main complaint about lack of juniper is not completely accurate. it's fairly noticeable in the aroma and the aftertaste but i think many are put off by the very strong citrus taste when you first sip. it's like a cheap orange hard candy and not entire pleasant imo

Can anybody explain why gin is a staple? Don't get me wrong; I like it more than any other hard liquor but the flavor is a bit too ... unique to really be useful for general bartending beyond mixing with clear sodas.

at first I didn't get it but really, it's just neutral beer. inoffensive is the best way to put it. it's not good. but it's beer, it is undoubtedly that. it's like eating raw celery. it doesn't taste good, it doesn't really taste like anything, there's not enough flavor in it to offend anybody, is there anyone you know who is violently disgusted by raw celery? it's just something to chew on and swallow that makes you feel less hungry for a little bit.

Nah not really. Some of them are full of shit but for the most part its a pretty good indicator of quality. I mean sometimes I love a beer that gets mediocre reviews, and sometimes like today I'd call a beer mediocre that gets amazing reviews.

As a point of reference, most beers on there are rated between 70-85. This one got a 100. And it just isn't that great. I'd give it a 75 or so.
