While not my favorite, I almost always order tekka maki first thing when at a place I've never been to before. Then I judge the entire restaurant based on the quality of the fish used in the tekka maki. It seems to have been a pretty good way of determining how much/what sushi I want to further order.

I'm not sure if I have a favorite, but uni did immediately come to mind.

Anyone else here who can't eat sushi by itself?

I love sushi as a side-dish to a bigger meal, but whenever I eat sushi and only sushi for a meal I start feeling sick before I am even proper full.

It's not just an American thing.
Wasabi is incredibly temperamental to grow, and you can only grow it at specific times of the year. It's also really expensive and used sparingly.

Even if a product is labeled as being wasabi, that doesn't entail it to be entirely wasabi.

I would think there's a good chance of that, especially if it was complimentary.

Depending on your supplier/how good the crops were this year/ if it was grown in a greenhouse outside of japan/ whatever, it can be 30-50 dollars for 2 ounces.

Even in Japan it can be supplemented with different parts of the plant(like the leaves). It's not too much of a stretch to spread it out with horseradish, since they're pretty closely related and taste similar. (I've heard it kind of tastes like asparagus though)

A little Japanese health food joint (more of a stall in a market) does brown rice sushi. Ome of the most amazing things I ever ate was a little roll they did with brown rice and smoked mackerel.

But thinking white rice is unhealthy is just plain silly. White carbs aren't evil. A pattern of eating that includes lots of them in conjunction with lots of animal fat, sugar and very little vegetable fiber is what's evil.

That would be a fine thing to say IF we had studies that looked at white rice consumption by itself and found it to be beneficial. Every population has diets filled with shitty food, white rice being a lesser shitty food than the shitty food the west eats doesn't mean it's not still shitty food, especially when you factor in all the other great things asian countries do in the way of health, like regular exercise, high vegetable intake, and high legume intake in south Asia

Anyway, I just like a simple salmon nigiri best. Generally, the fewer ingredients in a piece of sushi, the better, in my opinion. I like the idea of something really simple, that highlights the freshness and deliciousness of its few ingredients. It's like a really high quality steak. Are you going to cover it in spices and marinades and then slather it in sauce? No! If you did that, you might as well have bought the cheapest, most processed puck of not-meat in the supermarket bargain bin.
