Yeah, that's something I've noticed in a lot of old ads, as well. I can't even begin to imagine, though I'd wager you could find some of it China today.

Nothing. It was the marketing bullshit of the day: a difficult to verify health benefit that appealed to people who didn't realize it was largely BS marketing. Today's equivalent is things like "organic" or "gluten free".

I think it was a popular mentality back (and still is). Obsession with the bowels. Lack of fiber, vegetables and too much alcohol I suspect kept people perpetually constipated and they blamed everything on it. Here's piece from the wonderful rotten library about the guy who invented Corn Flakes:

>

> Kellogg himself seems to have solved the problem by redirecting his attentions to an obsessive fascination with cleansing the bowels. For Kellogg, the tube linking anus to lips was a seething quagmire of pollution, poisoning the mind and spirit as well as the body. Kellogg, a vegetarian himself, recommended abstaining from flesh and spicy foods, augmenting the diet with plenty of fiber, drinking lots of water, and irrigating with regular enemas of water with a yogurt chaser. And as director of the Battle Creek Sanitarium, Kellogg had ample license to apply his approach to many captive well-to-do neurotics in need of mental restablizing.

And oh ya:
