Yeah, that's something I've noticed in a lot of old ads, as well. I can't even begin to imagine, though I'd wager you could find some of it China today.

Nothing. It was the marketing bullshit of the day: a difficult to verify health benefit that appealed to people who didn't realize it was largely BS marketing. Today's equivalent is things like "organic" or "gluten free".

I think it was a popular mentality back (and still is). Obsession with the bowels. Lack of fiber, vegetables and too much alcohol I suspect kept people perpetually constipated and they blamed everything on it. Here's piece from the wonderful rotten library about the guy who invented Corn Flakes:

Not sure what's so funny but I never knew you had to use a can opener on a beer.
