Applebee's are planning to install tablets at their tables, eliminating any need for human interaction.

You'll be able to order food, pay the bill and play games.

It should also lead to fewer waitresses, cheaper meals out and an end to tipping.

Why isn't this an amazing idea? The only thing that would be even better is if they completely automated things so your food is brought to you by a robot or something.

They work perfectly fine in Japan. Personally I prefer them and feel like places with lunch rushes should use a similar setup to Japan with the ticket machines. Have a string of the machines setup and only one cashier. The machines don't accept substitutions and ideally offer a slight discount. Cash detectors in the US suck and are slow so I think they should only accept cards.

It really is hard to imagine that, in this day and age, waitresses still exist in franchise restaurants. Of course, human service in a good restaurant is important and you can see how professional well-trained and experience staff are.

But at an Applebee's? What's the point? You can tell the job will be obsolete when even the manager barely pays them and puts it on the customer.

They should just have a series of hidden or sleekly-designed conveyors that deliver the food faster to the customer.

Why does a person have to physically walk your food over for a fee? It's the same way 90% of bank interactions involve an ATM - it makes more sense to have bank employees dealing with bigger things than handing someone $20.

Because it's Applebee's. iPads won't magically transform it into a good place to eat. It'll still be foodservice grade meals served in a strip mall. A silly use of technology will only result in the sad experience of eating there being more dehumanizing.

If that's your thing enjoy it. But they could have T. rexes shooting lazors out of their eyes bringing your order to the table, and they'd still suck. Because their special kind of suckiitude comes from their business model, which is based on serving shitty food to people who don't give a fuck as long as they can sit in the restaurant instead of wolfing it down in their car. Corporations will always look for ways to increase their profits while pay out less and less. They are set up to work that way. So yes, even if you think you're saving money by not having to tip a waitress, you will still be paying more than you should for substandard food. The costs of having to install those tablets has to come from somewhere, right? It certainly isn't going to come from the company coffers. The savings of having to have less actual employees will only be seen over time, not right away, plus they will still have to have some waitresses and bussers, plus IT people in each restaurant to fix it when the system goes down. This is mainly a marketing ploy, it's not to save the customer any money. It might save a little time ordering, but in the end, you still have to wait for your food, wait for refills of drinks, etc. Plus, as they will expect you to pay from the tablet, you will most likely pay first, and then receive your food, which will lead to a huge slip in service, much like regular fast food places.

>> No.4995594

This is good for the waiters.

Now, if places like this continue paying ridiculously low wages (if you can even call them that), no one will work for them anymore, since the (deceptive) incentive of tips will be gone. So they'll be forced to pay actual, proper salaries to get people to work for them.

I'm not expecting to save money. I'm looking for a restaurant to have the balls to put the actual cost of a meal on the menu rather than pull a bait-and-switch every time. This tablet thing reminds me of what they use at chain izakayas in Japan, which is why I thought that was a possibility. It's way less stressful to see something that's $12 on a menu, order it, and pay exactly $12 instead of seeing something that's $8, order it, and then the check comes and you're like 'oh yeah I guess I actually have to pay $12'

And as such the conceit of waitstaff is unnecessary. But it leads me to question what image they're trying to adopt. They spent a long time trying to build an image as a "neighborhood" joint, in spite of being typically located in (strip) malls. Eliminating servers kind of goes against that friendly image, reducing them to the fast food joint without the veneer they've spent so much effort putting on.
>>4995493
>but when this catches on in better restaurants the world will be a better place for it.
I can't imagine this catching on in good restaurants. Wealthy people expect to be coddled, and that kind of service is a big chunk of what one pays for in a fine dining establishment. Take that away and you'll lose the high end clientele. Mark my words, you will not see the elimination of waitstaff in good restaurants, because service is part of the equation. And just as long as you don't fall asleep, you have as much time as you need to change your mind and delete and item and start over. Perfect for building sandwiches. Ridiculous idea for a restaurant since their selection is limited and who makes that many modifications to a restaurant dinner order?

>> No.4997273

That's a pretty interesting idea, would be good if you can also just go and pick up the food yourself too. There may be fewer jobs but who would actually want to be waiter or a waitress in a chain place? It's more of a pain than it's worth trying to work with certain problem customers and they don't get paid even minimum wage. Would also end the tipping war and keep away those certain customers that would be a real problem in the first place that couldn't even be bothered to get up and take their own food.

I worked as a garde manger in a VERY high end restaurant in San Francisco. I was responsible for all appetizers and several side dishes. I worked in a cramped, hot corner of a kitchen producing edible works of art for $9.00 an hour.

The fucking waiters brought this carefully crafted plate to the table about 10 yards away(smallish restaurant) and were rewarded with making my paycheck in tips EVERY FUCKING NIGHT.

Fuck wait staff. 9/10 times your food come to the table cold its because one of these assholes was busy having a smoke out back while the 3 people in the kitchen doing the actual work got all the blame for any problems.

This is all implying of course that the general public knows how to use technology, which is the biggest fucking joke ever.

Have you seen these unwashed chucklefucks try to use a self-checkout at the store?
Half of them can't even read the fucking instructions on the screen, and the other half can't figure out how to put their money in.

The fuck I didnt?

Lemme say this again. VERY high end restaurant. Several times a week some trophy bitch and her dried up husk of a husband requested the appearance of one of the chefs, usually to thank us or just look cool for whoever they were with.

This meant that I had to stop in the middle of fucking service. Change into a clean pair of chef whites (the fucking neckerchief and everything), and go out there and deal with these assholes while tickets piled up at my station. Half the time the head chef had us take out an amuse bouche or some small dessert depending on if it was before or after a meal. And you know what? I didn't get a fucking tip for shit.

Suck it wait staff. I hope iPads take your jobs.

The customer is always ri- I mean entitled.

Many of them do think it's okay to be picky at low-end places. I was once at a McDonald's during lunch rush, and this lady held up the line with her anally-retentive order.

Couldn't stand her bullshit, so I left. On the bright side, she saved me from eating at McDonald's, my last choice for lunch, but her sense of entitlement was completely uncalled for in a fast food establishment.

If people can do this at McDonald's, they sure as hell will do it at Applebee's. Once again, they SHOULDN'T, but they do. And that's the reason why I think electronic orders will take some time to get used to. Because there are these fucks who still create a need for human interaction.

I would definitely like this sort of technology to take off, but there will always be that one thorn in the side.

Fewer people work in those industries today but those people have other, better jobs. Working in KFC is infinitely better than having a mine cave in on you.

Well, of course you do. And the reason is because your government makes it so expensive to hire and fire workers that touchscreen ordering systems are very much worthwhile to the company.

Oh, and as a result, your underclass and teenagers are even more unemployed than in the U.S.

In the U.S., it's fairly easy to hire and fire low-level workers, and customers often customize orders ("no ketchup, extra onions, I'm on Atkins so I don't want a bun"), so McD's hires dumbasses and high school students to work the counters.

What was the "some how"? I'm always seeing Yelp reviews where idiots go "we only ordered x and the total "somehow" came out to over (insert huge amount here) as if the place was scamming them.

Either you looked at the menu with its clearly printed prices and ordered a bunch of food and drink and after whatever taxes and gratuities the total came out to that amount, or they charged you more than they advertised. So which is it? Shady business practices, or your poor financial planning?
