Hey /ck/,

a friend of mine from Germany keeps on telling me how awesome a "Doener" is, but i dont think so.
Isn't it basically just like a normal sandwich, just with more meat and salad in it??

>Doner kebab (/ˈdɒnər kəˈbæb/; Turkish: döner or döner kebap, [doˈneɾ̝̊ keˈbap]) is a Turkish dish made of meat cooked on a vertical spit, normally lamb but also a mixture of veal or beef with these, or sometimes chicken. The hamburger sandwich was invented in Hartford Connecticut in 1916. Prior, hamburgers were a pan fried patty of beef mince served on a plate. They are now called 'hamburg steaks' when served in this manner. When made with onions mixed into the mince and accompanied with gravy or brown sauce, it is called a Salisbury steak. The Salisbury steak was invented in 1888 in either Dobbs Ferry, Schenectady or Albany New York.

Actually, hamburgers were invented in 1784 by the German Otto Freiherr von Hamburg zu Lichtenaue who liked a dish of simple pan fried minced beef along with lettuce, tomatoes and onions. Now he usually liked to eat while he was playing cards with his noble friends but he did not want to put the cards away while eating so he ordered his cook to come up with something. The cook formed patties and assembled the burger as we know it today. It has been called "A Hamburg zu Lichtenau sandwich" since then or, short, a "Hamburger". They call it "beef wellington ensemble with lettuce" in Britain since WW1 though.

here's why it is awesome.
Döner Kebab is just a specific turkish preparation for meat grilled on a spit. If you order a Döner in Germany, this is what you get:
a quarter flatbread (or bread roll of some kind) filled with a ton of meat, iceberg lettuce, chopped red and white cabbage, tomato and cucumber, onion and a variety of delicious sauces.
A döner is so big that it WILL fill you up, guaranteed. And you can get one almost anywhere for 3,00€ to 3,50€. You can customize it if you don't like a certain kind of meat, vegatable or sauce and it's done within two minutes.
Any questions?

german here.

sigh.. well. Doener is not awesome. it just has its popularity because you got salad and can choose different souses to meat served inside of one piece of bread. for a cheap price. that is all.

all other fast food in Germany is usually dry sandwich or burger shit. if you want a salad or different ingredients you cant have them unless you pay extra. and even then you need to find a table where you have to put all shit open. Doener is just this all in one piece.

i used to like it few years ago because it was really different but now i cant eat it anymore because meat in Doener is utter quality. the salad usually some cheap vegetables mixed with low level souses bought in supermarket. it barely taste like a food anymore. not to mention the Arabs or Turks trying to rape you off with cents. old times when Doener was good are gone. people eat it only because alternatives are even worse and more expensive.

my usual fast food now is soup or pot kitchen next to my workplace. you need more time to eat and be more carefully with it but at least they cook with natural ingredients and not with caned souses and meat which looks like it was glued together. when being in the City then i usually eat salad with Grill-wurst and fries.
