Yeah, I grew up in the 70s, and while I wasn't subjected to these (we had Jello with canned fruit or bananas in it), there were still weird recipes in magazines or dishes in pleb-tier salad bars. Jello molds were a very common kitchen tool back then, as well. Just a fad that went bust, like fondue parties, though probably more advertising-driven than most.

Cracks me up with people are horrified at old food.

One of my hobbies is cooking 40's and 50's recipes with all those "foods of the future!!! (Canned, processed mystery meats, etc..) and you'd be surprised how good a lot of them were. Even the jello-based (you usually flavored clear jello with soup so the gelatin flavor will compliment the food).

Why do all these american gore food recipes from the mid 90's call themselves "salad"?

Like anything that is made with aspic or is genatenous with savoury ingredients is somehow called a salad.

Sandra doesn't even write the recipes. Her assistants do.

I'm not exactly horrified by those mid-century recipes, they're just funny. I also collect old cookbooks and have a whole shelf of "food gore" core cookbooks. I've made many of the recipes and yeah, a lot of them are actually really tasty. I've never been a huge fan of the meat/savory jello salads, though, with a few exceptions ( a few of the seafood based ones are pretty good). But I do like the dessert jello salads, they remind my of being a little kid, when my grandmother would make them and every church potluck had them. A lot of the recipes I try I will substitute certain canned goods with fresh equivalents, though. For example, instead of using cream of mushroom soup in a recipe, I'll make a thick mushroom sauce instead. And sometimes I just use the canned stuff. Depends on the what it is and the recipe. Anyway, it's fun to try some of that stuff. I also have cookbooks from pre-WWII which have some amazing from scratch recipes.

To all of you who think that the jello-food and canned food and mystery meats and processed foods were popular back in the 40's and 50's, they weren't. They were just heavily advertised. If you want to know what they really ate, then just talk to your grandmother or, if you are really lucky, your great-grandmother.

My grandmother recently gave me her mother's old cookbook because I kept talking to her about what she used to eat as a kid and what kind of dishes she used to make. It's filled to the brim with recipes and footnotes that make it look pretty normal by today's standards. Huh? I've always shaped patties from ground beef, dusted them with salt, garlic powder, and paprika, and either grilled or pan fried them with no problem without egg.
However a fried egg may accompany the patty into the burger.,

>>4916552
If you form the patty poorly and overcook it, I guess. But I pretty much never use egg in burger patties. It's preference.

I can't understand how he fails to cook that burger so badly. It keeps getting smaller as bits stick to the pan and is still mostly raw while he tries to eat it. I just can't take it.

Biscuits as in bread, if I'm not being clear. The bigger things are sausage, the little flecks are pepper, it's a creamy gravy, and it just looks like the biscuits might be a little stale or something, it usually looks better when it's presented properly.
