So I'm going to be turning 21 soon. I know some extremely basic mixology, but I'm still a huge pleb when it comes to this kind of thing. Up until this point I've mostly just had cheap college shit.

What is a good basic list for a home bar to have? Also, what sort of equipment would be needed?

One decent (20 bucks and up) bottle each of the following:

>Scotch
>Bourbon
>Gin
>Wodka
>Cognac
>Tequila (gold & white)
>Vermouth
>white rum
>dark rum
>maybe cachaca

cordials like
grand manier
creme de cassis/menthe etc
coffee liqueur
baileys
curacao
maraschino
amaretto
drambuie

Nice collection man, I'd like to see a few more single malts but they're pricey.

If you like Ardbeg you should try Lagavulin

are you looking to be mixing drinks all the time, or would you prefer to just drink better quality stuff?

if its cocktails, get this shit
>>4890351
in addition, you could also get a shaker, strainer, and a bar spoon for mixing and layering drinks. Ice is also important so depending on your ice maker you may want to get some big cube trays.

If you're new to it, I wouldn't recommend trying to build a full bar yet. I know the temptation, but just start with no more than a few drinks and learn how to make them really well, plus a few variations. Learn what brands mix well, taste good, etc. Build up your bar the same way you would a toolset - ie slowly and carefully, and with thorough research.

I'm in my mid twenties and just now expanding into the Sazerac. It's going to take a while before I feel confident that I have it well made. I'm also slowly learning with a friend about absinthe, made properly (as in no flames) in the late 1800's style. Absinthe especially you have to be careful about the brands.

For reference, I really enjoy this bartender's videos. He takes pains to avoid pretension, and explains his ideas well:

This, basically. Look, OP, you can rush out and buy a bunch of bottles, but what if you never get around to drinking half of them? They just sit and develop off-flavors. A few, like Irish Cream, actually spoil over time.

Buy one or two things that you like, and gradually expand from there. If you throw a party, maybe buy a couple of new things to see what they're like, and to see if any of your friends will even drink them.

I'll have to try it some day, if I ever see it in a shop. We don't get much beyond the basic brands where I am.

I've never even heard of a Bavarian single-malt before.

>> No.4891314

>>4891302
It's not even well known in Germany, it's a very small and pretty young distillery. From the production process their single malt is more like a bourbon than anything (they use new, burned casks) but now they brought out a sherry-cask version (the darker bottle in my pic). Both a little pricy (small production), but very good.

mirin. Always told myself I'd build up a bar once I was legal, but three years later, I have like, two bottles of decent booze, a bottle of bitters, and a handle of cheap whiskey I'll probably finish within the week. Alas.

I had a 12-year old scotch called Aberlour about a year ago or so. Problem was, I was new to drinking so naturally it burned a little at first. However, it had a wonderful aftertaste, kind of fruity. So, it's good to have a good quality scotch.

True, the Fruchtwasser from there are amazing, they aren't directly connected to the whisky though, just the bottling is done by them if I recall.

I would consider these the absolute 5 basics:
>whiskey
>vodka
>gin
>rum
>tequila

Keep these on stock if you can, they'll probably be used the most. Then add others such as vermouth, and have some liqueurs you like (coffee, orange, etc.)
Always keep red and white wine if you can as well

Before you start doing crazy mixology, you should know what most things taste like on their own, that way you can blend your own flavors with a good knowledge base. For a first liquor, pick right from your own image. Johnny Walker Black is the favorite drink of presidents and kings alike.
