You're absolutely right, OP. McDonald's isn't out a damn thing they can notice. Maybe, after awhile, there's some inventory issues, but nothing that they'd see on their bottom line. It's absolutely nothing to them.

The gross margin on unsweetened iced teas is somewhere over 90%, slightly less when the cost of sugar is factored in, which is why everyone sells them now. Even at $1.00 a cup McDonalds is probably making over 75 cents pure profit after factoring in the water and cost of the cup as well. That's why it costs less.

And I can't even self-serve fucking soft drinks at most of the fast food places around here because I live in what's gradually turned into meth-addled ghetto neighborhood and all the homeless people pulled the same shit (or just walk in with an old cup), so the dispensers all either got moved behind the counter where it's a pain in the ass to get someone to provide a refill, or are shut-off outside of the busiest hours.

Australian McDonalds small drinks cost $3 and they are about half the size of an American small. Also no refills allowed. So consider yourselves lucky and do not steal when you are already getting nice things.
