4869436 No.4869436 [Reply] [Original]

Viral marketing on this board has officially gotten out of control (mcdonalds 'about to make a run' threads, chipotle 'hey I work here ask me anything' threads, taco bell $5 box threads, 'hey /ck/ what kind of sandwich should I get', 7-11 hotdog threads... since /q/ doesn't exist, threads aren't deleted after reports and moot never replies to his emails, we have no recourse but to make threads on /ck/ about it.

Seriously mods, ban the shit viral marketers. Them having a 4chan pass is no excuse to ruin the quality of the boards. And ban the 'daily vegan thread' bullshit too.

OP, do you even know what viral marketing is? Let me explain since you apparently don't get it.

Viral marketing is marketing that SPREADS between people, like a VIRUS does. It is shared from person to person via social media: like when you find a funny video and you post it on facebook or send links to your friends and say "check this out" and then they share it with all their friends, etc. That's viral because it's SPREAD.

There's no spreading going on here. Nobody is posting links to /ck/ fast food threads on their twitter or facebook. Nobody thinks these things are so cool that they just have to let their friends in on the awesomeness.

Normal marketing? Maybe. But it certainly isn't viral.

Thus the containment. I don't think you understand the comment you're responding to. Strictly speaking fast food threads are part of the board's purview, but the spamming of threads pushing out others on more varied topics is the issue. Instead of removing all fast food discussion, regardless of marketing influence (which is tough to prove), containing them in one thread will remove the incentive for marketers while still giving anyone interested in those topics a thread to discuss in. I'm not interested in fast food, but I don't feel like my opinion should mean anyone legitimately interested in discussing it should be kept from doing so.

That's the point jackass, adblock can't target and block fucking guerrilla marketing shit ads plaguing this board on a daily basis.

Fast food ads work like cigarette ads. Fast food is highly addictive due to its chemically-engineered salt and fat content, and oftentimes just seeing a picture of fast food is more than enough to motivate a helplessly addicted fatty to go out and buy it.

Maybe, but 4chan isn't Facebook or Reddit.

4chan is supposed to be a community. Let's see it as a town, or a village. Do we perceive their presence here as hostile or not?

They come to town square, and yell about their products which are not available in our town.

Do we burn them at the stake, let them be, invite them to come back, or ask them to leave and never come back?

I will reflect on this.

Most other boards are pretty DIY, indie and creative, and as I mentioned earlier, new posts per day hasn't significantly increased, though global posts have. So more posts in as many threads. I also think there's less OC on the board, from actual people cooking shit, but I could be wrong. I do see more and more fast food threads, though, and since there aren't more new posts, then fast food posts are taking other posts' places.

...the general idea in this thread seems to be that it's too much right now. i am personally not well, and i am not feeling healthy, and i do not think i am in a position to make the best decision for /ck/ myself.

it is my opinion that this isn't their personal facebook page, we don't go to their page, they come to our board
that if they have their eye on the money of weabs and NEETs they can buy banner time
that the board has to keep in line with the others. ask /sci/ to do your homework or /v/ for a walkthrough.
what else...fine, so not all of us can cook. not all of us have the energy to, not all of us have the time, etc. some of us do eat fast food.

knowing that, restaurant business is about "getting to know teh restautant". like you go, you sit down, you're already under. remains to know whether you're going to be well-fed. knowing that, it's fine to talk about fast food and restaurants but on a limited basis. there is always one, at least one, fucking Chipotle thread. I am so sick of seeing their fucking burritos, half-chewed on top of that...anwyay.

but yeah, taco bell's marketing agency was a problem. they sent us a press release once, i might have to get in touch with them. Chipotle is the same, they're annoying. Panera vanished #2good4us.

There is also the uncertainty principle, there's a lot of people, and a lot of people just post here once, and only once, only their fucking hald-chewed burrito, or only that one time they cook, in their entire life.

But yeah, I think we can handle it. I will try and pay closer attention.

Count me among the skeptics that any of the fast food threads are created by paid marketers. They're frequent and repetitive, but so are a bunch of other topics (favorite condiments, poorfag needs to live on $10/week, noobfag leaving home needs recipes, rate this pizza, etc.) The occasinoal "ask me anything" threads from fast food employees seem perfectly authentic and non-promotional.

The ephemeral nature of 4chan seems like it would create verifiability problems for most social media spamhouses. I mean if you're paying people to write tweets, post on facebook, or add reviews to yelp or google+, you can double-check their accounts and see that they actually posted what they're billing you for. With click-thru link spamming you can include referral codes to track who's sending them. But a thread started on /ck/ is pretty likely to be gone without a trace by the end of the week. It's just doesn't lend itself to commercial abuse the way other websites would.
