This is an "Italian hot dog" from New Jersey.

Yes those are potatoes. What do you think?

"italian" means different things in different parts of the US. for example people in Maine have never heard of Chicago's "italian beef" - they have their own "italian" sandwich." I'm sure few in chicago had ever heard of this hot dog

I think I'm glad I no longer live in Newark. It's a shithole. The Portuguese food has gone downhill, the old Italian joints are mostly closed. Good Portuguese markets, though, and excellent poillo a brasa is easily found.

Oh, and the Italian hot dogs there have fries covered in marinara sauce in the bun. They look much better than in OP's pic, even though they're really nothing that special.

everything from New Jersey is Italian, its the only state where most of the "white" people came from Italy, this is likely why it is such a terrible place

Looks ok. I'd eat the potatoes like fries first. Small mouth. If I could bite it all at once I would. Maybe it was intended to be eaten that way though, seperately. For convenience it's just all in one package.

I've only heard of it because I lived there for 6 months. Honestly, no one cares. Chicago food is comfort food that only appeals to locals and the unfortunates who live in minor prairie towns like Milwaukee and St. Louis who think Chicago is the capital of the world because they grew up hearing about the aggressive young lad from Jesusville with a head for business who got rich trading pork futures in the CME.

i'm italian and the only "italian" thing in that hot dog is the kind of bread. Which is probably terrible since our bread roll is not suited for hotdogs.

It's not "Italian" as in Italy, it's an American style from Jersey. Sauteed onions, peppers, and potatoes (possibly deep-fried potatoes), often served in half of a small round loaf of bread, sometimes hollowed out. A normal bun might be used too, but it should at least be a good one, not dough-conditioner Wonder Bread that turns back into dough if you pinch it. The potatoes vary from small cubes to elongated slices to thick rounds to so thin they're nearly potato chips. While deviations are expected in any particular hot dog, OP's pic looks like it has too much potato (like 2-3 times too much) and a bun that can't possibly contain the toppings...just common sense tells you that's poorly prepared.
