I dunno, it's not so much the oil that splatters it's stuff you put into the oil. For instance, I was pan frying some frozen dumplings in a cast iron skillet with my shirt off, I put one in that wasn't properly defrosted yet, or it had a little drop of water on it or an ice crystal whatever, the crystal popped out of the oil and gave a nice burn on my chest. I bought this mandoline slicer a few months ago and it was a great investment.

It's a Benriner mandoline slicer, some Japanese brand that some local kitchen store owner told me was good. I bought it at a Japanese market for like $30 and it's amazing.

>> No.4784715

>>4782945

Honestly, I wouldn't buy a mandoline unless it was flush stainless. The waste these make is absolutely epic unless you keep the scraps for broths and sauces.

It's not really something I feel I need, though, mind you. Knife skills are important to me. If I was to get into canning pickles, though, I might want one, but I'm not much into vinegary stuff.

It's small enough that it doesn't take up too much room in my apartment kitchen, and helps me cut things evenly and thinly super fast. As far as waste I usually just cut that by hand so nothing gets thrown out.

I thought it was a joke before I got one but it is really great. Last night I shredded a ton of carrots really fast for carrot cake. My other option would be to take out my microplane and use that, and there's no way in hell I'm shredding carrots with a knife.
