So /ck/, I recently moved out of my parent's house and now have a shred of independence
And then I came to the realization that I don't know how to cook for SHIT

What should I be learning to cook? Mostly thinking of simple, cheap stuff and while I'm not very picky, I can't really have eggs unless they're mixed well into shit (Permanent retainer + eggs = very strong copper taste), can't have anything heavy with vanilla (Can cook with milk but can't even drink it without getting sick), and can't eat anything that's tough/hard to chew (Jaw muscles are absolute shit)

So far I've been getting by on macaroni and cheese, some packaged alfredo pasta (Just bring water+milk to a boil, then mix in the package of powder+pasta), pasta with butter, and shit like that
Infographics would probably be good to have, though this is the only practical/non-dessert one I have

Rice, onions and carrots.

Rule #1: Stick to the outside ring of the supermarket.

Rule #2: Buy per pound.

Cheap foods per pound?

* Potatoes
* Carrots
* Whole Chickens - simmer until it falls apart is the easiest way to make shredded chicken for a lot of shit
* Canned tomatoes - grocery tomatoes are total shit, canned ones are picked actually ripe
* Corn
* Rice
* Bulk yeast + wheat = make your own bread
* Other cheap veggies
* Only eat pasta on occasion, and don't buy expensive cheese for it. Learn how to make a good tomato sauce like this one: http://lenierchenal.wordpress.com/2013/07/30/basic-tomato-sauce/

* Butter is expensive, only use sparingly on things like baked potatoes. You don't need it for roasted chicken.
* Milk is also expensive, and isn't necessary

* Cheap fruits like Bananas ( i can get them for 19 cents a pound on tuesdays at one local place), oranges, apples

* Butternut, and acorn squash - pumpkin puree works too

* Eat raw food as much as possible to keep utilities down

* Frozen vegetables are usually equal in price to canned, and a lot fresher.

* Beans are cheap, and can be used as a substitute for meat in a lot of ways

My suggestions? Learn how to cook potatoes like crazy. Also learn how to make wonderful roasted vegetables, especially root ones.

Stick to the outside ring. All of the area not in the aisles. This is where the dairy, eggs, meat, and produce are kept. You know, real food.

I figure I'll ask here instead of make a new thread.

Same situation, and I have no idea where to learn how to actually cook. Is it just trial and error? I was at Barnes and Noble earlier today staring at the cooking section and saw a lot of recipe books but nothing that, you know, explained cooking to me.

I've come to /ck/ with envy for years, I want to leave canned foods behind.

I never thought of it this way, but very true.

I remember going to a grocery store in 'murrika and noticed they spread the soda, candy, chips, etc. over several aisles. The soda was across from the diapers, chips near the baking goods, etc.

There are a few all-purpose cookbooks that include primers on how to cook things, not just providing recipes. For instance, I wish I had read what my Betty Crocker cookbook said about soaking dried beans before I tried making red beans and rice the first time.

Honestly I think I learned how to cook well enough by looking up recipes of things I wanted to learn how to cook, and applying what I learned from previous instructions and trials. Often I would experiment by slightly changing or adding ingredients and noting the effects it had on the final dish. It's a matter of interest, time, effort, gathering quality ingredients with a high degree of re-usability. A basic understanding of chemistry also goes a long way.

For example yesterday, while I was mixing ingredients for a batch of cookies I realized I was completely out of vanilla extract, but I really wanted the little extra flavor. An equivalent substitute should be flavorful and probably be alcohol-based. I had rum in the cupboard from when I made banana fosters, so I used that. Holy mother of fuck, this is the best batch so far. This recipe usually comes out so dry and crumbly, the ones with rum are perfectly chewy and moist.
