Lager is associated with lad culture, it's generally considered pleb by anyone else. Britain only very recently started into craft-type quality lagers - previously the only half decent lagers available here were american imports e.g. Brooklyn.

Real ales have always been available, but neckbeard middle age types are the traditional market. In the last decade or so it's exploded into a massive hipster thing becoming increasingly more mainstream.

We're even getting decent British-brewed wheat beers these days, where previously that genre was dominated by german and belgian imports.
