Cakes go hard when left a long time.
Biscuits go soft.

Jaffa cakes go soft so they're classed as a biscuit.

If those don't have a creme filling, they're not scones.

You're probably one of those people who thinks chili without beans is still considered chili.

The only thing I have ever seen called a scone in the U.S. is similar to what I posted. Never in my life have I ever heard of having a creme filling as a requirement for scones.

...and I love beans in my chili, but thanks for the assumption. Keep trying though, if it makes you feel better.

Americans use the word cookie because we inherited the word from Dutch settlers. American English is an incredible melange of words thanks to the origins of the country as the settling point for dozens of different nations, including the ones that were already here.

Filling like a twinkie? I have never seen or heard of such a thing being called a scone.

Scones are, and this is a widely-accepted defintion to the best of my knowledge, a rich chemically leavened quickbread. Usually made with cream as the liquid ingredient. Usually sweetened. Often sugar-topped or glazed.

In Utah, "scone" means fried sweet yeast-leavened bread, like a sopapilla. Also the ones I had were dripping with honey. That's the only major variation I've encountered, though.
