i just ate an avocado for the first time in my life

and it tasted pretty much like nothing, wasn't it ripe? was it the long transport to germany?

>> No.4562314

Avocado has flavour, but it's not very strong. Ripeness is important, you want it to be fairly soft. It's also good to add a dash or two of salt per halve, and maybe some lime juice.

The thing about avocado is that they have a almost buttery texture and when you add the right amount of salt and seasoning they have a buttery taste too that many love to enjoy with various things.

Avocados have a high concentration of fat and nutrients in them and depending on where you stand in the fat debate they're either shit or a super food. Personally I love making guacamole.

Yup, that is just what an avocado tastes like. I don't really love them, but I eat them every so often. Its much better for me as a condiment type thing. Include it on burritos or salads, with fish, stuff like that. I also enjoy the avocado, bread, sardine toast from good eats.

I will disagree with the poster who says guac is nothing special though. Guac is awesome. Just make sure the lime/salt/spice balance is right.

Been said already, their flavour is very subtle so they need sufficient seasoning to bring out the taste. This is the 'secret' to good guacamole, which may include salt, chilli, cumin and lime juice, which all marry and enhance the flavour of the avocado itself.

Still, they are an acquired taste. The people who don't like them often equate the mouthfeel with eating soap. But then they've probably eaten the avocado under-ripe so no wonder.

Fair point actually, many nutritionists are quacks and have idiosyncratic ideas on what's good diet-wise.

However that's not to say that avocado isn't a healthy food. They're high in oil so you shouldn't eat too much of them if you're controlling your caloric intake, but other than that they're very good food.

I think the quality has generally gone down, maybe because of increased demand. Nowadays I think they're picked when they're not ripe enough and it either leaves them too hard, or if you wait until they're ripe they're often mushy and watery and sort of uneven in their ripeness. Its like taking celery and wrapping it in pure grease and burgers and calling it health food.
Nutritionists say retarded shit of the likes the whole time because they take something which is unhealthy, but CAN be consumed with moderation, once in a while as a treat, and call it "good for you".
Its like the research they did with wine, yeah, wine is not as bad for you as you'd expect from an alcoholic drink, but saying you should be drinking a serving a day is really dangerous, specially since you can get the same benefits from eating other, healthier foods. However, wine is tasty, a pleasure you can indulge sometimes.

Yes that's true, but I think you've missed the bit when they say "In moderation." Or maybe you're deliberately skipping that to try to bolster your position.

I don't remember *ever* seeing a recommendation to eat lots of it from a nutritionist or doctor. Specifically, I'm remembering portion sizes of like one or two squares a day. Even if you took that literally and had two squares every day that wouldn't break the calorie bank on anyone with an otherwise healthy diet and lifestyle, it's only something like 50-80 kilocals FFS.
