Hey /ck I'm in the need of some new rum. What is your preferred choice of rum? I was considering the one in pic.

>> No.4557962

maybee i drank too much captain but i dont know if i can into spiced rum anymore

>> No.4557965

you need to be more specific. there's light rum, dark rum, and spiced rum, and most wine snobs look down on spiced rum. are you sipping or mixing?

there's a /ck/ rum infographic floating around, maybe someone can post it. naturally, it doesn't address the issue of spiced rum.

The op's pic is good if you like a dark spiced rum. Also mixes well with Mt. Dew or 7up

er, I mean rum snobs. I swear I haven't had that much to drink.

I'm quite a fan of the Kraken. Good option I'd say OP.

>> No.4557990

kraken is actually pretty good... it's smooth and while i can't drink most rum straight, but i can drink it straight no problem...also the alcohol percentage is a little higher than most rum/whiskey so it's a nice bonus.

I think a light rum in seltzer is a great thing to have with a cigar. Some people swear by scotch or port or whatever but I find that to be too many flavors to pay attention to.

I was thinking a spiced rum. I don't mind sipping, but I'm mainly a mixer with cola or ginger ale. Also a real big fan of limes if that means anything.

you don't have many options in that case. kraken, sailor jerry, captain morgan, and maybe bundaberg. as far as I'm concerned they're all pretty much the same thing, it's like coca cola vs pepsi vs rc cola. it's all garbage so go for the ones whose ads you find the least obnoxious.

i can't even taste kraken mixed with cola. only the heat from the alcohol. dangerous, delicious stuff- at least with sailor jerry's, you get an idea of how much you;re drinking because it's so apparent in your mixed drink.

Try Captain Morgan Private Stock. It's nothing like regular Captain but it's still pretty cheap and available everywhere. After too many horrible nights with Skol, this is the cheapest rum I can drink and still enjoy, which is saying a lot.

For straight mixing my preference goes for havana club 3 yrs old (not bacardi).

For sipping I like several different old rum preferably with a good volcanic soil.
Zacapa (Guatemala)
The Arcane (Mauritus)
among other.

As for spiced rum I prefer to make it myself using white rum from isles.

I used to like bacardi 151 in my college days, but that got me in deep trouble , quick. and I like light rums to mix summer drinks, but i take it a step down. ( not aristocrat or travelers club - raw alcohol with some molasses flavor) and I seldom drink dark rum except for cooking. I like gin, and once again i like middle of the road. like gordons or gilbys( and not cheap stuff like raw alcohol with pinesol added) it seems to me a lot is market driven. once above a mid price point, it seems you are paying for advertisements. but i guess i have an unrefined palate. or alternately as p.t Barnum said, a sucker born every minuite

I like Pusser's rum blue label mixed in a Cuba Libre or just plain coke and rum. It's spicy and peppery, but it's a bit harsh neat. It does, though, have enough of a punch to push through coke.

I also like Zaya 12 year rum because it's got a sweet caramel and vanilla flavor. It does have a woody flavor, too, which I'd assume is from being aged for 12 years. I like it in something light like a rum Collins (Rum, lime juice, simple syrup, club soda) because it doesnt exert it's flavor quite as much, allowing the lime, syrup, and soda to do their thing

Kraken is my rum of choice. Nicely spiced without tasting watered down (Morgan's Spiced) or being too sweet (Sailor Jerry).

Some folks say it tastes kinda medicinal when mixed with coke though. Your mileage may vary.

Sailor Jerry's was better when I was in college -- that was before they changed sugar suppliers.

They used to be $17 bottles of rum that could easily compete with $40 bottles, now Jerry's is barely better than Captain Morgan.

Austrian Stroh 80. The 80 is what you think, it's 80% alcohol content. Basically it's rum-flavoured spiritus. It's actually tastes like the synthetic rum-flavouring for cakes. Pretty nice with Coke though.
