Here in cincy we have an Ethiopian restaurant that's perennially rated one of the best restaurants in the city called Emanu.

Finally went today, ordered three entrees, their house specialty lamb, chicken and beef. Each entree was like $15 and we got a spiced meat pastry appetizer.

Appetizer came, it tasted like just crust, the filling had no discernible flavor except maybe a light mint taste that we thought was the crust.

After 30 mins the entrees came on one large bread platter. I was excited about the finger food style of eating and the bread I'd heard so much about......

The bread was spongy and had a weird industrial aroma and the meats looked slopped on the plate with no sense of presentation. Whatever, it's Ethiopian.

Tried the chicken which was two pieces still on the bone with a cooked egg in the middle all covered in a red sauce.

Took a tear off the bread and got some chicken and sauce and bit in and........itsfuckingnothing.jpg
Had a generic boring "spiced" tomato paste taste. The egg tasted...eggy.

Okay, maybe just a subtle dish, onto the lamb.

Same thing, bland with an unpleasant aftertaste. The meat had the color, taste and consistency of something boiled. Same with beef.

Nothing was particularly bold or interesting or even savory. Just badly prepared meats and under seasoned sauce.

We just stopped eating after ten minutes and gave up. Paid our $50 tab and went to BASED HEAVENLY Sha'an Indian in Hyde park and filled up on delicious tiki masala and chefs nan.

Tl:dr - Ethiopians should stick to sewage water and air, their attempt at solid food is shit-tier.

Pho.

Chicken noodle soup without all the pesky delicious wondrous taste.

Protip: if you have to dump hot sauce on something to receive taste, it sucks.

I lived in your area for 25yrs and recently transplanted to east coast/melting pot sort of area, allegedly know for a wide variety of ethnic food.

If there is one fact that was made abundantly clear to me, the Indian food here is shit. It really is trash.

Even the worst indian food I had in s/w Ohio was better than the best around here. Savor that stuff, and god help you if you ever move from the area. Waste no more $ on desert soul food. What you describe sounds like every eastern/asian meal I've had around here, and its not from "Americanization", its just pure, apathetic "don't give a fuckedness".

Seconded on the French food. Not even sure its the food itself, but when you go to a french restauant you kind of expect a certain experience. Be careful with that. Green text would follow up my greater-than key is worn out from so muc buttrage lately.

Went to a French place in Philly after a game. Looked like a regular old tavern-type place (narrow row-house style brick building where they keep the lighting low to cut down on renovation expenses) so I expected the standard $20, which would normally be $15 for burgers/fries, but hey, its french, what do you expect.

Waitress claims they are known for their steak, so I order one. Everyone else gets a variety of entrees.

Never order a steak at a French place. It was similar to a diner T-bone. Except after it was frenched it was just plain weird. Sides were bland, desert was quite similar to anything you could get at a mass-market grocery store.

Bill comes, there's 7 of us, guy sitting next to me grabs it and graciously offers to pay. Boy I bet he regretted that. $375 and some change, and of course %18 gratuity. To this day I can't see how anyone kept a straight face about that. Normally you get a propper razzing for that, but we all felt bad and its never been discussed since then.

A new restaurant opening in my town selling turkish kebabs. The place had been sitting empty for about 6 months with a coming soon sign on it. I went there with a friend, and it was a bizarre experience.

First off, it was nearly completely empty at lunch, which we should have taken as a sign to leave. We each ordered a plate of "beef kebab" ($12) and took our seats.

About 20 minutes later, our food is finished. The employees seemed to be unsure whether we were supposed to go to the counter for the food, or if they were supposed to bring it to us. We ended up meeting them halfway.

The paper plates were filled with rice and the "kebab". The rice was overcooked, and had virtually no seasoning on it. The meat was tasteless, tough, and had clearly not been trimmed before it was cooked. I had pieces of gristle as large as the pieces of meat. It was covered in some gravy-like sauce.

Bizarrely, about 5 minutes into the meal, our "server" guy told us that soda was complimentary, and pointed to a fridge full of coke and sprite cans.

I've been there too OP, should have posted a thread, I would have told you to stay away. Fucking terrible food.

The only reason it gets high ratings is because of the liberals with white guilt syndrome want to appear cultured and diverse by praising African food and eating African turds.

I just tried it for the first time, yesterday. Place was cool, good music, cool people, but from the awards and articles plastered on their walls I expected the best burger on the planet. Instead, it was solidly alright. I've had better from a bar, though, to say nothing of my own grill.

I've only gone there once due to the fact that the (less than a month old) restaurant had garbage strewn across literally every surface because nobody would empty the only garbage can in the restaurant. The food fortunately didn't get me sick, but it also didn't taste very good.
