i'm going to london btw.

There isn't really "authentic british food".
Find a good cornish pastie.
Find some good fishnchips.
Find some good englisized indian if that's new to you
Try a pizza express, blows any other pizza chain out of the water

Authentic brit food is curry. Try to comprehend that; the world's worst food was replaced by the world's second worst food.

What do you mean by non-expensive? Are you looking to eat out at restaurants that aren't absurdly expensive or do you want to spend as little money as possible?

Actual pubs themselves are hard to recommend since there are just so many around. I'd say you'd just have to try your luck with those but try looking on TopTable. Try fish and chips and try kebabs but most of these places while good are still nonetheless junk food.

If you are looking for good but relatively inexpensive restaurants, I recommend two.
The Balcony: http://thebalconlondon.com/menu/balcon-marchemenu.pdf
Dinner: http://www.dinnerbyheston.com/menus#SetLunchMenu

The best thing about food when it comes to London is the high quality and diversity of the food. Go to China Town for dim sum. There's a woody looking restaurant (I'm afraid I don't know the name) that does very good xiao long bao and good jujubes. Four Seasons has good duck. Most of the dim sum restaurants are pretty good no matter what you get. Try changfen and xiajiao/har gau. Get some lotus leaf wrapped rice. Don't be an idiot and go for the buffets.

Go to New Malden for Korean food. I'm afraid I again can't recommend places because I don't know the names, though. Ha Ru is good food. Across the street is Kj that has better decor and larger portions.

I recommend curries but unfortunately I don't know much about those.

we don't really have it.

try to find a good scampi and chips or fish and chips shop
I recommend having mayo with chips like the dutch. I find it far superior to ketchup.

make your own english breakfast (if you want one, they're really overhyped) or make one with a fellow brit. make sure you have:
>bacon
>fried eggs
>fried bread or hash brown
>SMALL portion of beans
>fried mushrooms
>fried tomato (optional)
it's best to have this when you're hungover

we have some good thai food and some good indian food about, but i doubt it's authentic.

I'm not sure where this guy is staying so that might not be possible. Just thought I'd say that if this guy isn't aware, he could just go to a café and buy it (though it probably wouldn't be as good as home made) for around £5, depending on the area. I see it around £3 to £7.

This is a nice restaurant in London:
http://www.thefollybar.co.uk/

Serves pretty much everything including local stuff. I had a Christmas turkey dinner there was quite impressed.

As others have said, try and get a decent Cornish pasty, also try buttered scones with jam, clotted cream and a cup of tea.

Very much depends on where you are. Down south (London and surrounding areas) prices can get pretty crazy.

Bars and pubs tend to be cheaper in Northern cities (Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield etc.)

Wetherspoons pubs tend to be cheap where ever you are.

>> No.4342023

Right your going to London which is down south so DONT get fish and chips. Fish and chips are only good up north, honestly dont waste your money. Everywhere will be relatively expensive by the way, its London.

Some ideas:

Your best bet it to go to a pub that serves food or a carvery!
Get yourself a roast beef or chicken dinner
Full English Breakfast
Cottage or Shepherds pie
Get a good home made pie n chips, chicken and leek or something.
Beef wellington
Get yourself a nice big sandwich from a sandwich shop somewhere, seek one out! Pork and apple sauce barm?
Lamb shank
Maybe get a good Chinese take away. Crispy shredded beef/chicken or something
Try an indian takeaway or restaurant

Eh, they do great meat pies - something Americans seem to suck at for whatever reason. Also they're top-tier for boiled sweets and other hard candy.

Never understood why British beef is so shit though, since their lamb & mutton is quite good.

We're getting to the point where you can get by almost without cash. Everywhere has a chip & pin machine. Some smaller shops/cafes might have a minimum purchase to use a card though, or might charge a fee under a certain amount, since they have to pay a percentage to the card company.

Another piece of advice is there are a lot of bulgarian and romanian immigrant pickpockets working the London public transport system, so watch out on the underground tube.

per capita, we have more michelin star restaurants than the US. we still lose to france and japan though. Mainly because the japanese never sleep, and reproduce by budding, and the french give the awards out. Either way, the stereotype of shitty british food hasn't been true since about 1990, when we started to give a shit.
