As far as Supersize Me goes, it's not actually a very good documentary. Great that it brings attention to how some people eat fast food all the time, but suddenly eating great amounts of fast food every day, refusing to walk all of a sudden, going supersize whenever asked, isn't reasonable. Of course he's going to throw up if he force feeds himself like that. Ask someone overweight who eats fast food all day, every day, to suddenly increase their calorie intake so much and they'll probably throw up to. It doesn't have much to do with the fast food itself.

I do like it, though, since I love food documentaries.

I agree it's not a very scientific approach, and any radical change in diet will have adverse effects, but anything that scares people away from that place is good in my book.

Everything about it just... It makes me so mad! Even leaving out the health implications, the way it's marketed at children, the way the "food" is deliberately made addictive, the effects on the environment, on small businesses, on their employees...

For me, it embodies everything that is bad in this world.

I feel inclined to disagree again when you say "anything that scares people away". I think a more reasonable approach should be taken but I understand that, sometimes, people can be impractical and need to be scared away. However, 'scare tactics' can end up with people insisting animal products, such as red meat or butter, are bad for your health and refuse that sometimes, it's okay.

Is the food actually deliberately made addictive? Are you referring to HFCS? If that's the case, it's more that they used it because it's cheap, later found it may be addictive, and ignored that (which is morally ambiguous but at least they didn't set out to use addictive ingredients). I think big corporations can't be relied upon to make good moral decisions, though of course it would be great if they could. Something like that rather needs to be greatly discouraged / enforced.

I think there are worse things than the evils capitalism can cause.

The key to making eggs like that is to cook them rapidly at very very high heat. Preferably in some bacon grease or coconut oil. The eggs will be fluffy and light and be finished cooking in seconds. You want to stop cooking them right before they get rubbery.

It is sort of like how Julia Child cooks the omlette in this video. Dat speed and heat is the secret. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RThnq3-d6PY

I actually first learned about this method of making omelettes from Julia Child (from her "Mastering the Art..." cookbook), but have always had difficulty with it.

The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure I've watched all the episodes of her original TV show, but don't remember this one (it's been awhile); I found it amusing that she used chopsticks for part of it.

I typically make my omelets more "American" style, which means using low heat and ending with bigger curds. Here's a video that gives the two different versions:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57afEWn-QDg

Taking them off the heat before they look done (=they get rubbery) is definitely the one thing most people seem to mess up with eggs in general.

The speed and heat is the thing that I've just never been too comfortable with. I've worked in kitchens, but have never done breakfast, and I usually poach my eggs or do them over easy, so I've never really put the time in to get this method down.

Where this - >>4261242 - anon went wrong was probably with the speed, and taking the eggs out before they really look done (carry over cooking), as opposed to too high of heat (thanks for the pics, btw).

It was all the rage when I was in college in the late 90s. 4chan has a huge number of college aged kids. It just seems really "profound" to people who were raised watching non-artsy-fartsy films and suddenly they're in school and all these new ideas and such are thrown at them. Same reason why nutella seems inordinately popular on /ck/. This board isn't populated by normal people, it's the perpetual freshman year in college for flyover folks who were raised on fish sticks and wonder bread.

OP reporting in: I should have specified from the get-go that "Julie and Julia" need not be mentioned.

The only redeeming factor of that piece of trash was the fact that they were willing to include Julia Child's reaction to the entire project, which was utter disgust and a sense of insult to French cuisine and food in general.

Also, "Pieces of April", which starts out with the title chick trying to cook a turkey for her family's Thanksgiving dinner.

If you enjoyed the movie, then I would recommend picking up the book (Eat Me: The Food and Philosophy of Kenny Shopsin).

I received the book as a gift a few years ago, and while it certainly isn't the best cookbook, it really reflects its subject matter, and is something I keep coming back to while taking a shit...

I honestly lived in NYC for a few years awhile back, but didn't hear about Shopsin's until I was given the book, and subsequently watched the documentary. Next time I'm back in the city I'm definitely going to try it out.

My impression is that it is expensive, and over glorified diner food, but based on how awesome it looks, and the fact that a single plate of food there will fill you up for an entire day, I am looking forward to actually trying it.
