What are your favorite Japanese dishes?

>> No.4220264

That is a microtomato. It is grown in Japan. It is a very small tomato.

>> No.4220265

>> No.4220268

Katsudon. I dunno if that's a legit Japanese dish or just an Americanized thing, though.

>> No.4220270

Why are the tomatoes still attached to the tomato branch? Pretty sure it's not edible.

>> No.4220271

>>4220270
Easy to eat them by just plucking them off the branch with your teeth. Also looks nicer and prevents them from rolling around on the plate. They're more for garnish/show anyway, so may as well look nice.

>> No.4220278

All the westernised dishes. That's the only thing that's worth it.

Hard to say, I never can tell what's Americanized and what's legit. I ate at a ramen shop that seemed fairly legitimate, and I've eaten at Ajisen frequently, though I suspect Ajisen isn't that good.

Canned tuna never contained dolphin, they were just part of the by-catch. Tuna fishing methods have changed since then, and I'm sure you'll be happy to know that the much greater by-catch of the dolphin excluding new method is driving several species of turtles and fish to extinction. It's more like fuck silly laws that have unintended consequences.

For example, back in the 1970's the US sugar producers bitched to the government that they couldn't compete with cheap foreign sugar. In response the gov't passed a series of tariffs and import quotas on sugar. The idea was to help the American sugar producer by increasing the price of foreign sugar. Unfortunately, it backfired. When the price of sugar spiked as a result of the quotas, all the major sugar buyers in the US switched to HFCS instead. As a result, our sodas and desserts are loaded with HFCS instead, AND the American sugar market tanked.

As usual, government policies create many problems beyond those they attempt to "fix".

I like Sauce Katsudon. (Japanese schnitzel with sweet Worcester sauce)

Katsudon - 100 years anniversary in 2013.

In the Taisho period, Masutaro Takabatake, the first owner of the Western-style restaurant "Yoroppa-ken" in Tsurumaki-cho, Tokyo, across Waseda University premiered a sauce katsudon at a culinary convention held in Tokyo in 1913 and served it in the restaurant around 1917.

Implying the actual origin of a food has anything to do with what nation or culture it is in reality identified with...

It's not as though cultures "steal" dishes from other cultures and claim them for their own. Pretty much all cultures are in reality a melange of other cultural influences (otherwise we'ed all be like, say, Australian aborigines...

People have done all sorts of shit everywhere on Earth at all times, just because someone did something in some place doesn't mean that "belongs" to that culture, if another culture adopted the practice and actually incorporated it into its identity, in a way not done by the "originator"...

Kewpie is probably the one Japanese thing I don't like, at least on sandwiches. Tastes great on okonomiyaki and the like though.

It's like you have a special little bias... at least you'll never breed.

I love nikujaga but my parents don't like the sweetness of it.

Nabe is a dish they both like, and my grandma likes the way I make it too (GRANDMA LIKES MY COOKING I AM SO PROUD): shimeji, king oyster mushrooms, enoki, beef, tofu, onions, bok choy. If I'm making it with my friends and not my parents, then fish cake items and udon as well.

Okonomiyaki is easy and cheap as fuck. I have the sauce, katsuo, and mayonnaise in the fridge, and Otafuku's mix isn't that expensive. I make mine with beef instead of pork, both out of personal preference and because a friend doesn't eat it; cook the beef either on the griddle or in a pan beforehand, season with some garlic salt and a dash of soy.

I'm getting better at making takoyaki (pic related, one of my first tries), but a lot of mine still turn out only as partial-domes, or kind of burnt :( I can't really figure out what I'm doing wrong, either

Nikujaga is fucking delicious. I think I like Nishime the best though.
