braeburn, gala, and fuji are probably the most middle of the road

crispness is pretty much reliant upon how ripe the apple is but i find that the macintosh has the most satisfying crunch

it's also p tart and i like tart

>> No.4175736

honeycrisp are by far the best.
sweetango apples are similar and also extremely awesome, but probably can't be found outside of minnesota or washington

Pink Ladies are the best apple. I don't even care what you are looking for in an apple. Even if you want a green, tart, baking apple--fuck you, it's Pink Lady.

>> No.4175753

honeycrisp, jazz, pink lady all relatively on par for me as the best. I think I'm missing one.

Found some Pink Ladies as the grocery t'other day, and wanted to cry because the ONE I found that wasn't bruised was absolutely perfect.

As a produce employee at a fancy grocery store I have to say that there is no best apple. Where I live all apples are picked by the end of October to avoid frost damage. That means anytime after that you are eating an apple that is coming out of nitrogen storage, until the summer, when they tend to import apples from Australia, because that is their apple season.

That being said, you cannot guarantee an apple of any type being crisp. It has to do with freshness. Some last better than others but I have had good and bad of all types (barring red and golden delicious).

Jazz and Pink Lady apples are some of my favorites but I tend to like apples with a bit of tartness. They seem to be holding on crispness better than many other types. Fuji is nice for a sweet apple but can get soft if it's not fresh. I also recommend the ambrosia and pacific rose as sweeter apples, but again, only if they seem fresh. You can sort of tell by the feel of the apple, but not always.

As for Honeycrisp, only eat these in like september/october (north america). I get morons buying these these shitty, watery honecrisp for $4/lb in January because it's the only apple they will eat. They are pretty good at their peak but I hardly think they are the best apple.

Also my store lets customer taste products. I'm not sure how many other stores do this but our customers are welcome to ask for a slice of any fruit to see what it's like. From my experience quality and flavor can vary from box to box, producer to producer, week to week, so the only way to know is to eat it.

I wish I could find a produce store that let me sample the fruit. I think my city is too small for that.

I've recently discovered Jazz apples. They are the shit.

>> No.4178158

I love the taste of Cortland the best, but they just don't keep their crunch very well and start to go floury within a few days. They don't cook well either, so it's really just a shame. They can only be enjoyed for a short period, when they're locally in season.

>> No.4178766

>>4175934
thank you. i will look for them. I love pink ladies so much i saved the seeds and am raising baby pink ladies for my orchard.

>> No.4178860

Finally got to try honeycrisp recently. I don't quite get the deal with them. They're not bad, but didn't seem to be a whole new world of flavor worth the extra expense.
