What's your city's best sandwich?
Because that's truly the way to judge a city's cuisine.
I'm from Philly so of course I'm gonna say the cheesesteak. Not from Pat's or Geno's and the only acceptable cheeses are American or provolone.
P.S. Real Philadelphians don't get Wiz.
P.P.S. Oh and with onions.

I was born in Philly, and you have no idea how hard it is to find a proper cheesesteak sandwich here (Florida). I finally found a shop who's owners are from Chester and fly in the rolls and meat - still not quite the same, but it's close!

And yes, Wiz is for tourists.

I'd have to say the Noble Pig sandwich.

Pulled pork, ham and bacon with provolone on freshly baked bread.

Probably the best sandwich in the Austin area.

The only decent Philly cheese steak sandwich shop we got in Toronto is this place called 'I went to Philly'

Don't give a shit if it advertises that you should get whiz on their sandwiches.. As long as I have the yoohoo to wash it down, I'm fine.

I am sad the place is gone but there was this place in Burckroe VA named Mona Lisa's that had a sandwich they called the bomber. It had fried onions, mushrooms, and peppers on top of tons of meat, smothered in melted cheese with hot sauce on a foot long. They would heat it up to crispy goodness in their pizza oven. I've been living in Philadelphia for quite sometime now. I went to high school here. My parents moved here.
I love it here and consider it my adopted hometown. I like cheesesteak a great deal, as well. Barring homemade, my favourite cheesesteak is from a Cambodian woman at Belmont and Girard, on my way to work.
Another I like is pretty much any place that's not Pat's, Geno's, Jim's (especially Jim's) or Tony Luke's. Basically, if it's a corner place or diner that does cheesesteaks, it will be better that any of those places, hands down.
Did you know that Cheez Whiz on cheesesteak was first done in the Detroit area and not in Philadelphia? Tourists from Detroit that came to Philadelphia in the 60s were dismayed that they were unable to get "a Philly" (as they call it) with Whiz from Pat's. Geno's opened in 1966, across the street from Pat's, specifically to serve the tourist population their beloved Whiz and became the first place in the city to do it.
Also, the cheesesteak was technically invented by Dalessandro's in Roxborough. Way back when, Pat's had satellite locations in less accessible areas of the city like Roxborough/Manayunk and the Northeast. Pat's Roxborough/Manayunk location created the cheesesteak. In the 80s, when Pat's was facing hard times and hard competition from Geno's, they were forced to close or sell their satellite locations. The one in Roxborough was sold to Joe Lorenza, the manager of that location, who named it after his maternal grandfather.
There was a fire and the location burned down, forcing Lorenza to use the insurance money to buy a building for the shop's new location; he settled on Henry and Westover. The original Ridge avenue location is now a Wings to Go.

Yeah, I've seen some recipes that use them but it's just not hot enough for me. You could add more crushed red pepper to compensate.

I think, the wax peppers would be too weak on their own but it might make a nice addition, if only for the color.

I had no idea that Italian beef is not served with cheese. I don't know how I feel about that. In the Philly area, there's a bar called Nick's that serves a very similar sandwich, with the meat shaved-to-order from a hot, whole roast, and served on either a long roll or a kaiser, pickled vegetables optional. Once shaved, the meat is baptised in the pan-drippings (and the roll can be, too, if you ask for it) before placing on the bread.
They often serve their sandwich with both provolone and a sprinkling of grated parmesan under and on top of the beef, respectively.
Really good.

really bro's the cheese just gets in the way and detracts from the whole eating experience. The best beefs have so much of the "gravy" soaked in to the bun that it's almost falling apart and the thinly shaved beef is really the only thing holding the sandwich together which continuing to support the peppers. Cheese would dramatically interrupt this careful balance between the moist bread and juicy meat coupled with an unwanted texture element.

Actually, all the sandwiches I've tried there have been bad ass. It's just the best place for sandwiches in the area, period. But, the Santa Cruz is definitely my favorite. The sizes are outrageous. Nick's Roast Beef (which I described above: >>4132904) has, oddly enough, a better roast pork than Dinic's IMO. This is only because of the dripping, messy, deliciousness that is their roast pork sandwich, the bread so-soaked in meat drippings that it is basically melting.
If I could get greens on a Nick's like I can at Dinic's, I would never get a Dinic's sandwich ever again, but the "broccoli rabe" really makes it.
I even think their Nick's Roast Beef's roast pork is better than their roast beef. Dinic's is very good, nonetheless.
Fun Fact: the Dinic family are of Croatian background, but adopted the DiNic spelling (notice the capitalisation difference) for their roast pork stand to Italianise themselves to their neighbours. Similarly, Lidia Bastianich (née Matticchio) is married to an ItaloCroatian (hence her surname). There was a lot of Italian/Croatian intermixing after WWII, particularly in the Philadelphia and New York areas, due to Croatia having been, prior to the war, part of Italy/under Italian occupation.
Broccoli rabe is a traditional accompaniment to Croatian-style roast pork, as are pieces of a Croatian cheese whose name currently escapes me. It tastes very similar to provolone. Anyway, Dinic's just put the entire traditional Croatian roast pork dinner onto a roll and sold it to its Italian and ItaloAmerican neighbours.

Dear Jewyork,

You really need to elevate your sandwich game, just putting some cured jewmeat on some wimpy bread with some average mustard really doesn't make a high level sammie'. At best it's a Juvenal attempt at making a sammie'; you've got no complexity, a severe lack of condiments and NO HEAT...what's up with that, your jewbuds can't handle spice?

Just, check this out and let it be your guide to, attempting to produce a better sammie.

while, yes it may appear to be a single topping the depth of flavor and complexity (YES, complexity) from the giardiniera makes it infinitely more complicated that it would appear. There like a whole garden of vegetables in this shit, then you get the heat from the peppers, acid form the vinegar, silky richness from the olive oil, a blast of flavor from the Italian herbs and garlic, rounded out by the juicy and salty brine. It also, brings texture to the party with the pickled crunch from the vegetables and peppers. It's just everything you could ever want on a sandwich all rolled into one.

In Baltimore it's a close race between the jumbo lump crabcake sandwhich and this beautiful fucker to your left.

Similar in taste to texas' brisket sandwhich the baltimore pit beef sandwhich is very slow charcoal grilled top round sliced paper thin and layered thick onto a kaiser roll.

typically the sandwhich is then topped with thin sliced white onion and a sauce called tiger sauce made with 2 parts mayonaise and 1 part horse radish.

The enitre sandwhich often ranges from half up to pound and a half and is eaten most often with french fries dusted with old bay seasoning or with brown gravy.

Notable places in baltimore (or in the suburbs) to go get a pit beef sandwhich include chapps pit beef in east baltimore or my personal favorite being Pioneer pit beef in windsor mill MD east of baltimore city.

If you're ever down near charm city make sure to try one of these bad ass sandwhiches while you are here.

Here I thought you were just some anon blowhard, but I think you raise a salient point, in a way. There is something to be said for the intensifying and alteration of different cuisines that have been incorporated into the American culinary tapestry. However there is something to be said for differing palates and opinions, and something that is prepared for your average Smith in America is going to be different than your average Nguyen in Vietnam. Really, I think that each sandwich is good in its own ways; I'd eat the fuck out of that sandwich in the picture, but only if I was in the mood for it, which I won't be all the time

In the right settings, a "faggy" bahn mi would hit the spot just as much as that Italian meatfuck sandwich. It's impossible to judge one truly as being "better" than the other due to the fact that they're two COMPLETELY different sandwiches with different flavor profiles and design philosophies.
In short, that's just like, your opinion, man. Doesn't mean it's not true, but it doesn't mean it's necessarily true either.

While I will concede that in general the development of ones palate is constrained by geography and culture there are some classic flavors that are more universal than others. For instance, that twinkle toes bahn mi has some rather strong, liver, fish, chili and cured pork stuff going on which are not found as pervasively through out the world. Where, on the other hand an Italian beef has a much more universal appeal to a great cross section of the worlds population. Hence, if by that alone it is by default a more widely acceptable sandwich an will always be more popular to a more significant percentage of the population. Thus, it is not just my opinion that it's better, it would win a popularity contest hands down if we were to present this to a large number within a diverse group of individuals.

If you don't recognize the look of that bun, you're missing out. That's what happens when you can softer breads with hot/juicy (especially cheesesteak or steaks with gravy and wrap them in foil as soon as they leave the oven. Its a STEAMED bun. The bun become a little chewy and juicy. Its not for everybody, seeing that people faggot sense starts tingling when it comes to which bread is best, but I love it.

Its the same concept as wrapping a hoagie/sub in paper and refrigerating for a while to let the flavors mingle. When steak juice mingles with bread its delicious.

Pic related... Used to get these in the midwest in the mid-80s. Always wrapped in foil. And always mingled. Nice mushroom gravy too and mozerella.

I never thought of it that way. Very well put. Chicago tourists are all the fuddy duddie midwest douche bags wanting to "see the big city" once in their pathetic lives. Not really a destination for foreign tourists, and coming from any other region in US you would have to pass through at least a half dozen more interesting cities just to get there, so why bother?

Unless you are a hillbilly boob flashin slut, braindead fratboi, or some old fucker waiting to die (or poorfag midwesterner that finally got their settlement check from slipping on peepee at Walmart and wants to feel the gouge of Disneyworld before they die) then Florida is just a pitiful, miserable place to visit.

Philly however, the tourest don't seem like the usual idiot. They either come for the food, the culture, or the history. I'm a Floridafag, and there's a reason tourism is huge here.
Don't like hillbillies? Stay on the coast, away from fairly unpopulated areas.
Don't like the college/dumb tourist crowd? Don't go to fucking Miami or Boca Raton, pick a city with fucking history and art culture like St. Augustine, Key West, or Sarasota. Most of the east coast is fine too.
Don't like old people? Fuck you, its Florida.

As for sandwiches, the best one by far is the Cuban, owing to the large influence of em here. Even people who dont like mustard like it on this awesome food. The only thing to watch out for is places that don't serve it with real cuban flatbread.
Honestly, Florida food culture is good just because we have all of your old pros living the semi-retired life down here. Some of my favorite places to eat owned by you northerners. We also have nearly every type of immigrant running some variety of their country's specialty.

Regular cheesesteak cannot be made in philly, must be authentic". Always admired that. They bring a bit of the only thing that is good about the south... Without all that southern shit.

Darrel's special.
Some bar around where I lived a while ago had it.

Can't remember everything on it, but I know it had jalapeno mayonnaise, and that fucking made it.

The taint and the ballsack are two different things. There cannot be one on the other.

And yes, pulled pork is shit. One of the only sandwiches I would turn my nose up to.

It is roast pig. You keep trying but nothing is happening.

de lait literally means of milk. as in "pig of milk". as in SUCKLING PIG.

Y'all niggas would sound way cooler if you had any idea what the hell you were talking about. And yeah, I know how it is prepared, I host a boucherie every year.

because that's not the only way to prepare it, only the most common way. I didn't say roast anywhere in my original post and nowhere in the name of the dish is the word roast, in french or english, but superpleb wanted to be an insufferable prick about things, so I got on the prickwagon with him.
